Dr Hurd is excellent. I was advised by River Ridge dermatologist I needed IPL skin treatments for spots on my nose and face. Cost me a total of 840.00, after treatment it did not go away. I went to see Dr Hurd and I had pre cancerous growths on my nose and he prescribed a prescription cream and it killed the cancerous growths. He is very observant and wants to heal you not just sell you an expensive service that doesn't work. read more

I have had the worst time with the Blacksburg office. The staff does not follow thru. I was told I had a form of Lupus and needed blood work to determine what type it is. They left it up to me to make the appointment with no order from Joe Sheets to go on. Do not go to this office. read more

I had an allergic reaction to the dressing following a biopsy. Could have happened to anyone, not the issue. This practice has no answering service, no nursing line, no after hours support for patients who have complications. After making them aware of complications, they recorded that it was healing, which it wasn't, and didn't follow up again. I had to go to urgent care several days later with no improvement and no follow up. The office managers are confrontational and unprofessional. They will interrupt you, dismiss and invalidate your feelings. They will hang up on you while you are speaking. Patients should never be treated the way I was treated when airing valid grievances. I transferred my care to another practice because I don't feel safe going back. read more

I had a spot on my forearm that was squamous skin cancer. It was never explained to me what it was when I went to have it removed. I had to ask. They did not explain to me how it was going to be removed, I had to learn that as they treated it. And then they shoved me out the door with no instructions on caring for the wound. It bled profusely and when I called to see what to do, I could get no one on the phone. Never again. The doctor at the Radford office does not care, and acts like you're wasting his time. My husband sees Dr. Hurd in Blacksburg and likes him. That is where I will go for follow up. Not back to Dr. Sheets. Don't waste your time. read more

Do not let Emily Hairfield cut on you! She removed a cyst from my back. A week later it was infected. 2 weeks later, my stitches were removed by someone I'd never seen before and the skin wasn't even healed together; I had 2 wholes in my back. Week later and I still have two large scabs that look like pus in them. Sent a picture to see if everything was alright with them, because I was on vacation and was over 4 hours away from the nearest office but never got a response. Probably will have a scar. Glad it wasn't on my face. read more

I called to ask how much a skin tag removal would cost. They told me 10 dollars. Perfect--let's make an appointment. Had skin tag removed in all of 10 seconds and left--this was in June. Got a bill a few months later for 118.00. When I asked why---the answer was that the skin tag removal was 10.00---the appointment itself was 128.00. 118 bucks a minute---incredible---he must be brilliant beyond brilliant. Hah, hah, hah----are they serious or just greedy sons of guns? Not happening----talk about bait and switch. Next time I cut my own skin tag off. What a bunch of sheisters. read more

If I could give this place a zero I would!! Both my sister and I went in for consultation appointments for serious issues. We both were not taken seriously I'm guessing because we were not the card holders. My sister didn't go back right away and I tried to give them a chance but they charged us a total of $300 for two 10 minute check ins. They don't care about people just money. read more

I am not too keen on going to the doctor, but the treatment I have received at New River Dermatology has been superb. I have felt sincere concern and compassion, and my maladies have been resolved. I am particularly impressed with and appreciative of the kindness and astuteness of Angie and Dr. Hurd. Yes, there is sometimes a wait before one is seen, but that is because the doctors do not rush through exams, giving patients plenty of time for thorough examinations or to ask questions. read more

Great experience at our very first visit for my 11 year old son. Very friendly staff and Dr. Joe Sheets was amazing with my son. One receptionist will tell you one thing, while another one will tell you something completely different. The front office manager is very rude, and they are unable to make "personable" relationships with people, even if they see them every week. They proudly rip you off and don't care if you threaten to take business elsewhere. They have their eyes on the money and that is all. read more

Then they told me I would have to wait another 4 weeks for the next available appointment. Receptionist was rude and did not care at all. No thank you. Saw Joe Sheets a couple of times. Doesn't know what he's doing. I went in for an issue with my eye...he never even looked at it. When I called him out for it out he said he could see my eye from where he was standing.... LOL. I was wearing glasses and makeup and the issue I came in for was very minuscule. I could go on about the other issues, but I feel like that scenario should be enough of a takeaway. read more

Dr. Sheets is wonderful. Unfortunately the office staff are rude and unhelpful. When they call to confirm appointments the do so hostilely and with threats if you do not confirm. Cons: Practice consistently overbooks appts and practitioners are late to see patients - I waited 40 minutes after my scheduled appt to see my provider. Which is ridiculous! I also feel this office tries to go "the path of least resistance" when diagnosing skin issues - the will give you an Rx and collect their fee without attempting to get to the root of what is wrong. This is the worst business I have ever encountered. 1.) I have to wait at least 45 minutes AFTER every appointment time to be seen. I had to wait an hour and 45 minutes to be seen for my first appointment, and was only seen for 6 MINUTES (I timed it because I was furious). 2.) I was charged THREE TIMES for appointments I had already paid. They have "lost" TWO checks of mine in their system. No apology was issued when they found out they credited one check to another person's account. 3.) The office "forgot" to send in multiple prescriptions on time-sensitive medicines, and then had the nerve to tell me I did something wrong and the pharmacy did something wrong. 4.) Every time I go into the examination room, they ask me about what I am in for. No one knows anything, including the doctors. 5.) There is no message system or emergency number for prescriptions on the weekends or on evenings. Due to this, I cannot inform them when they "forget" to send in my prescriptions over the weekend. 6.) Only after 25 minutes of waiting for an appointment did they come out and tell me that they couldn't see me that day due to one of their mistakes. 7.) I had to see another doctor because my doctor was "occupied" and I had to return back to work after waiting 40 minutes to see her. 8.) On multiple occasions I have heard through the door my doctor gossipping and talking about personal lives with the assistants while I've been waiting to be seen. This usually goes on for about 10 minutes or so. read more

Was difficult at first getting an appointment, expect to wait at least 20-30 minutes to be called from waiting room & appx 10-20 min after being assigned a room to see the doctor...beautiful waiting room & doctors are extremely nice however. I've loved all of the doctors I've seen so far..most are younger than usual, but they're much more knowledgable about new derm products & terms...kuddos to front desk nurses there as they've worked patiently with my local CVS when calling in prescriptions...the CVS always seems to mess up prescriptions :) read more

Dr. Hurd and his staff are highly trained and courteous. I get all my questions answered and have never felt cheated. I highly recommend. With so few Dermatologists in the area, I expect a wait, but for my aesthetics appointments I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes. read more

You will love it there if you drive a 2015 Porche. But avoid them if you value your money, is my advice. If you have a serious health-threat like pre-cancer, find some down to earth place that costs less and doesn't promote questionable aesthetic procedures. That is, unless you are looking for an operation that looks like it belongs in Hollywood serving narcissistic stars and starlets just like like you. Hats off to the owner for developing a money machine right here in the lil' ol' NRV! No doubt they can do some fine work. But in my case, I walked in to get some pre-cancer squamous cells removed from my ear and arm, on advice from my PCP, and let them talk me into a aesthetic treatment for the visible damage on the bridge of my nose left behind from an accident. Shame on me. The pre-cancer area on my ear was not resolved even after four treatments and two methods tried. And as for the aesthetic procedure, no improvement whatsoever was visible after a couple treatments, and then the advice was "Well, it may take several more treatments. Hard to say how many." And will it last? "Hard to say how long it will last. You may have to come back some more." They are masterful at getting more visits and more $ out of you. My daughter wanted me to cover the out-of-pocket related to an upcoming visit for an acne consultation. So i called in the find out the amount and pay it over the phone. "We can't say how much it will cost until we do it. But we can call you at the end of the appointment, before she leaves, to collect payment." Sounds like a blank check to me. read more
