They also have a few tents sites as well as two bunkhouses with air conditioning, beds, small refrigerators, and coffee makers. The owner are onsite and are most gracious, friendly, and welcoming people you will ever meet. They have kayaks and canoes for rent and a shuttle service up and down the river from their site. Whether you want to fish, tube, or just enjoy the river, this quiet, family friendly campground is one of the best places to hang out. They go out of their way to make sure everyone has a great experience here. Definitely one to make a regular stay.

The trail was very easy to find and it had a few different loops. Even though the distance isn't that far, the elevation was a little bit more of a hike than we bargained for. There were amazing views and it was a pretty easy trail to walk. 10 out of 10. Highly recommend! We will be back to hike next time here as well. The best part of it is that the trail ends the river which is a beautiful view and there are benches and tables if you want to sit down and have a snack and rest.

We were hiking in…read moreGrayson Highlands in the Winter and Wade let us stay at the campground out of season when no other campers were around. Most of the camp sites appeared to have water, electricity, and a fire pit. Wade had firewood waiting for us when we arrived. The restrooms and showers were clean. We didn't do anything related to horses during our stay, but the stables and facilities for horses seemed nice. Best of all (for hikers) there are National Forest Service trails directly accessible from the campground. You can walk directly from the campground to trails that climb a bald hill with a beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. We hope to return someday!

So, I don't bike, and that what this place is for. Sure you can hike it, but it's a 57 mile path. Similar to tje va Creeper trail at 34 miles and the W & OD trail that's 45 miles. Also, the Potomac Heritage National Scenic trail at 900 miles!!! Plus the C & O Canal trail at and amazing 184.5 miles!!! I truly wish I could bike it but I could never hike it. So.. no go for me here. *also note The New River Va State Park is similar. So much so, they don't allow a Trail Guide check in here. Your Trail Guide check in at The New River State Park counts for for New River and Shot tower. There are numerous entrances. This one is at Austinville.

I stumbled upon this shop just after arriving in Galax on the New River Trail. Hungry, new to…read moretown, and in the market for a backup tire tube, I found New River Trail Outfitters before finding the restaurant I was looking for. Not realizing that it had only been open a week or two, I moseyed on in. It turns out, they didn't have the right tube for my bike - they do have some gear, and a bike repair shop, to complement their rental bikes, but are still in the process of stocking parts for repairing pretty much any bike that might be brought in. My bike isn't very similar to their rental bikes, so I wasn't able to buy one here. But what really stood out is that even though they weren't able to provide a sale, the husband-wife team running the place were generous with local knowledge, outwardly friendly, and didn't try to push other products on me. They not only were able to direct me to the restaurant I hadn't yet found, but gave me some fantastic recommendations on what to order. And as we talked about how I wound up in Galax, it became clear that they're not just enthusiastic about bicycling, but people-people as well. This stands out because about the best I ever expect with a bike shop is service-friendly, and it's not rare to find a dismissive tone (of the "I know more than you" type) at bike shops. Here, it didn't matter what bike I was riding or that I was probably only going to spend about $10 even if they'd had what I was looking for in stock. If they were local, and they did a good job fixing things in service, this is where I'd take my bike. They have that straight-shooter car mechanic vibe, where they'll tell you if you need something but not try to oversell you - *and* they're people I'd like to hang out with outside of a business context. It is a little bit off the trail, and you have to use caution when crossing US-58. It's worth visiting Galax regardless, though, and if you need something from a shop or want to rent instead of bringing your own bike, I'd stop here.

Both of my kids attended Camp Cheerio last summer (July 2016) for one week sessions. They had…read morenever been to sleepaway camp before so mommy was nervous. My son was 10 and my daughter 13 their first summer at Camp Cheerio. They both had a wonderful time and will return this summer for two weeks. We chose Camp Cheerio because both my husband and his mother had attended this camp and had good memories. Also, the price is reasonable compared to some other sleep-away programs we've checked out. The cost per kid is $2,060.00 for two weeks. The shorter one got a $50.00 sibling discount. We just filled out the kids activity forms for this summer and they have so many programs to choose from. My son loves outdoor stuff so he has hiking as his first choice and my daughter is into horses at the moment and is looking forward to riding. The mountain setting is idyllic and the bunks and facilities look clean and well maintained. My daughter the foodie said the food was excellent. All of the counselors were welcoming and smiling. Weird experience being from New York and South Florida but I guess people actually are friendly in other places. The camper check in program ran smoothly. Read all the stuff on the website before heading there and you won't have any trouble.
