They also have a few tents sites as well as two bunkhouses with air conditioning, beds, small refrigerators, and coffee makers. The owner are onsite and are most gracious, friendly, and welcoming people you will ever meet. They have kayaks and canoes for rent and a shuttle service up and down the river from their site. Whether you want to fish, tube, or just enjoy the river, this quiet, family friendly campground is one of the best places to hang out. They go out of their way to make sure everyone has a great experience here. Definitely one to make a regular stay.

I've played here a dozen times or so. A relatively short course there are a couple of holes with…read moretight fairways and doglegs. But for the most part an easy course to score on. Beginning on no.1, a short dogleg right over water, you realize driver is your friend here. A solid drive over the trees will get you on or near the green. no.3 is probably the longest hole on the course but reachable in two. Not sure what hole but on the back there is an elevated tee that scares the crap out of me. I don't mind driving straight uphill for 150 feet, its the coming back down that bothers me. But a fun hole. Skyland is located on the NC/VA border just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. I remember once my best friend from college came to visit. It was winter but mild in Winston Salem. We drove the hour or so to Skyland and once we got on the parkway the snow began coming down so fast that the trees were covered before we got to the course. Cheap green fees. Less than 30 bucks on the weekend.

I stumbled upon this shop just after arriving in Galax on the New River Trail. Hungry, new to…read moretown, and in the market for a backup tire tube, I found New River Trail Outfitters before finding the restaurant I was looking for. Not realizing that it had only been open a week or two, I moseyed on in. It turns out, they didn't have the right tube for my bike - they do have some gear, and a bike repair shop, to complement their rental bikes, but are still in the process of stocking parts for repairing pretty much any bike that might be brought in. My bike isn't very similar to their rental bikes, so I wasn't able to buy one here. But what really stood out is that even though they weren't able to provide a sale, the husband-wife team running the place were generous with local knowledge, outwardly friendly, and didn't try to push other products on me. They not only were able to direct me to the restaurant I hadn't yet found, but gave me some fantastic recommendations on what to order. And as we talked about how I wound up in Galax, it became clear that they're not just enthusiastic about bicycling, but people-people as well. This stands out because about the best I ever expect with a bike shop is service-friendly, and it's not rare to find a dismissive tone (of the "I know more than you" type) at bike shops. Here, it didn't matter what bike I was riding or that I was probably only going to spend about $10 even if they'd had what I was looking for in stock. If they were local, and they did a good job fixing things in service, this is where I'd take my bike. They have that straight-shooter car mechanic vibe, where they'll tell you if you need something but not try to oversell you - *and* they're people I'd like to hang out with outside of a business context. It is a little bit off the trail, and you have to use caution when crossing US-58. It's worth visiting Galax regardless, though, and if you need something from a shop or want to rent instead of bringing your own bike, I'd stop here.

A very nice stop along the parkway. The Blue Ridge Parkway…read moreis a 470-mile-long roadway that meanders through the mountains and connects the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. The parkway boasts about 170 official stops along the path. This site is one of these many stops. This particular stop is just before a sharp turn when coming from the north and just after it when coming from the south. Like many other pull-offs, it has a small area to pull off the road and stop. It does not have diagonal parking spaces but it does have a pretty view across several ranges. This particular view is looking down a valley and so most of the ranges aren't perpendicular to you. The ranges are at an angle to you. We got there at a good time and could see the broad panoramic view. There were not many trees in the way and so the view is a very nice one. This particular stop does not have any restrooms, trailheads or tables. It is just a stop with a nice view of several ranges south of the Blue ridge parkway.
