I started going to New Model Salon shortly after meeting Hung (owner) at my previous job. He was a customer of mine and after getting to know him, he offered to cut my hair for free. I thought it was an incredibly kind gesture and I took his offer. Keep in mind, I live in Roseville, CA and his Salon is located in South Sacramento. I used to pay $45 for a haircut at my previous barber in Sacramento and I was not sure what to expect. After letting Hung cut my hair for the first time, I was 100% satisfied with his work! The environment at his Salon makes you feel at home. The employees that I've had the pleasure of meeting there are extremely kind to everyone too! I went in to get a chin and throat wax, and they used the same wax dip stick on me every single dip into the pot, that is so gross, and so very very unhygienic and it contaminates the wax pot. I imagine they do that with EVERY waxing they do. it's a perfect way to give someone a bacterial infection. Also, they don't have any aloe or any actual skin products for helping with irritation or cleaning the wax off your skin, they use Neosporin gel, so you leave with greasy skin. They also charge you a dollar to use a visa or a master card. read more

I've been getting my haircut here for as long as I can remember. It is so difficult to find a barber that is reasonably priced and does a clean job. This place is legit. It is only $7 for a haircut. Be sure to bring cash, you can pay by card, but it's a $10 minimum (still a great deal for a nice haircut). If the wait is not long, you can get in and out within 30 minutes. I highly recommend coming here during a weekday to avoid a long wait. The weekends are the busiest if you come during peak hours (11am - 2pm). Here are my recommendations for barbers: (1) Hung, (2) Mike, (3) Angela, (4) Cam. You cannot go wrong with any of these barber. If you're looking for a quick haircut at an affordable price, this is the place! She straightened my hair afterward but don't expect a lot of small talk and a shampoo. That's just how Vietnamese people run their business---efficiency at an affordable price. I'll definitely come back. I usually have my mother cut my hair, but she's pretty conservative (anything that isn't long layers is too much for her to deal with). I wanted to try an undercut for the first time and was kind of nervous about it. I also asked her to trim my hair and keep the long layers. I came in with a few pictures to show the stylist, and she was quick and accomodating. I appreciated that she asked me twice just to be sure where I wanted her to cut and at what length. She joked that my mother, father, or boyfriend would have a fit with this edgy haircut, but that's precisely why I needed to go here to get it done lol! The haircut came out to be $12. After I added tip, it came out to be $16. They accept credit card ($10 minimum), which is wonderful, because I forgot to stop by the ATM to get cash. The receptionist was very friendly as well. She told me she's been here for 20 years and has never seen me around before (I live in Elk Grove, and my mom usually cuts my hair). When I called ahead of time to set up an appointment, they told me that I could just walk in. I put my name down and waited for 5 minutes at 4pm on a Friday. The haircut took maybe 15 minutes, tops. Second time here and I was expecting a better haircut than this. The lady listened well to my requests. The only issue was that the length of my hair was uneven. I pointed the issue out and she was willing to fix it. She took a look and did her best to even out my hair to the same length. She asked me a second time if it looked okay but I just told her it's good. It's still very uneven but I didn't want to risk asking her to try and even it out again because I knew it will only become shorter. Gonna head home and fix my hair. Not really a big deal but I did not want to pay for a haircut that wasn't to my satisfaction. Hair always grow. This is a review I've been meaning to write for years. I moved to Sac in March of '05. My 3rd week in town, I had a first date with a very interesting lady. On a Saturday afternoon, we had lunch at a chinese hole in the wall (her pick, I can't recall the name) on Broadway. Then I drove her to SF and she showed me Pier 39. Back in Sac that night, I took her back to my apartment, so she could use the bathroom before I drove her back to her car a few blocks away. She didn't leave my apartment until September. One word to describe the experience . . . fuego. One of the best takeaways from that relationship is New Model Salon. I'll always love her for taking me there! New Model is open 7 days/week. I seriously wonder if there's a day it's not open; I have a mind to drive over there on Christmas to see. I'm a brotha who sports a conservative fade. My hair maintenance needs are very simple. If you're a guy of any race, nationality or background, LISTEN: don't worry about the line. If what you're after is a relatively normal haircut -- no jheri curls, mullets or Etch-A-Sketch on your dome -- enter the shop and you WILL be pulling out of the parking lot with a quality hair cut in 20 or less. I guarantee it. As I said, ethnicity doesn't matter. Hair length doesn't matter. The best part? Wait for it ..... wait for it......you'll pay $7. I've been a regular since June '05. I stopped going for a while, because I live about 35 miles away. But I recently became a regular again. Because when it's all said and done, I want a decent haircut. Came back for a haircut and eyebrow wax. I wasn't satisfied with the haircut at all. I showed the dude pictures of what I was looking for and he probably looked at it for like 10 seconds and moved on. I was looking for a high 1 on my sides and after seeing that it was a 3 on the upper-sides, I asked the dude to give me a 1 on the entire side and he was clearly not happy about it. The eyebrow was was still pretty good. But, after getting them threaded regularly, I don't think I would recommend getting them waxed over threaded. Cheap as hell though. i haven't personally gotten my hair cut here, i've been growing out my hair so i haven't cut it in awhile, but i come with the bf all the time for his regular trim. guess i didn't know but many of our friends go here! service is really friendly. a few of them know the boyfriend's name since he's such a regular i suppose.. his hair cut came out great, he looked super handsome. we were both satisfied and i think it was only $7 for the cut! only downside may be that the place is pretty popular, so the wait can be 5-30 minutes. there are maybe 10-13 seats for clients waiting. oh! and there's also a little mani station and the lady who sits there also looks like the receptionist. haven't heard any reviews or opinions about that though. ps. the bathroom is really nice and clean too! From outside this spot looks a bit outdated but, on the inside is where the magic happens, I asked for Hung(not sure about spelling sorry) and was promplty seated and asked what kind of cut i wanted. I got a high fade which Hung did very well, not to mention super fast with crazy precision (hes been cutting hair for 18 years). My head is weird. For some reason, many barbers cannot cut my hear properly so when I came to New Model Salon I was expecting the worst. I would tell the barber that I would like it a certain way and they will do their best to give me what I want. This time....I GOT WHAT I WANTED!! The barber (forgot her name) did an excellent job in cutting my hair. She knew that my head curves in a little and that she needed to even it out so when my hair grows out, it doesnt get too poofy. Went for the second time in a month. I was recommended from a friend. Booth 6 did an excellent job the first time so I decided to come back. Another barber said he could take me, I told him I was waiting on 6. He says he won't have time and he could take me. I said OK I'll try you, how are the fades. He said never mind with your attitude I won't take you. Him and another lady begin to yell at me and curse me in English and their language. Terrible customer service!!! I've gone here 3 times now. The last time is today. I just received a haircut from the younger Asian guy who has his station towards the end. He rushed my hair cut and the back of my hair has a lot of unevenness. He did a really really bad job. One of the worst if not the worst hair cut I ever received. He wanted to get rid of me and it took him like less than 10 minutes. There were not anyone around also so I do not understand the rush. I wanted a 2 on the sides and a short fau-hawk. Thus begun my search for a new place I could trust. One day while shopping with my mom at SF Market I was in dire need of a hair cut and my mom suggested I tried this place out. It has been about 5 years and I won't even consider trying anyone else. They have a pretty convenient schedule for those who work and get off late M-Sat 9-7 and Sun close at 5. It doesn't matter who cuts your hair here, they are all very qualified. The only time I would request anyone is if I'm going to a wedding or special event, I will request Mike, the guy has the hands of a surgeon and does not know the meaning of a bad hair cut. The place is adorably cheesy and outdated, like something from a 70's movie. The gal (I'm trying so hard to remember her name now...I think it may have been Tiffany??) was soooo sweet and delightful to talk to. I got a phenomenal haircut and then got my eyebrows waxed, too. I figure there's no 0 star or would've given them one. Came in there and asked for a simple cut, fade, blend and leave the top off. This girl started cutting the sides and when she start shaving my top, it was too late to tell her to stop. What part of do not cut the top the she didn't understand? While cutting my hair, she was doing something in the Internet with the other lady that was there. So, I ended up getting shorter hair, went home and cut my whole hair! VERY DISAPPOINTED!! No fuss cut 'n go. That's what I'm talking 'bout. Don't expect small talk or even hair washing here (if you don't ask for it), but for $7 for a men's haircut and $10 for a one-length women's cut, I was a pretty happy camper. Although the place was pretty full when we walked in on a Saturday afternoon, there were plenty of barbers, so we were seated about 15 minutes after we walked in. I was slightly worried about the quality I would be getting at the price, but I was pleasantly surprised with the Asian lady with a waist-long ponytail who cut my hair. She was quick and efficient about cutting one layer at a time. Additionally, I usually have to request them to only use scissors (vs. those thinning shears) so I don't get even more split ends. However, the lady exclusively used scissors without my prompting. I asked for one inch of hair to be cut, and she did exactly that -- nothing more, nothing less. Usually at these cheapo places, I get way more hair chopped off than I want. She had pretty long hair herself, so I guess she could relate to how difficult it is growing out hair. After the cut, she promptly started using an iron to style my hair, and it was so soft and nice afterwards! No frayed, crispy, or frizzy ends like I usually have after a cut. It was so nice I didn't even want to go swimming afterward for fear of ruining it. Where has this salon been all my life?! As for the men's haircut, I'd have to give it 4 stars. They can do very simple buzz cuts, but they aren't as good with longer men's hairstyles, like the faux hawk. The layering just isn't as smooth throughout, and they aren't really good at dealing with cowlicks. At least they can understand English and follow instructions though. read more
