This is a nice, big store on two levels which has general clothing downstairs and shoes,…read moreaccessories, young teens and maternity wear on the upper level. It has a great range of cheaply prived t-shirts and jeans as well as a more expensive range of more cutting-edge fashion items. The accessories are bright and funky and the shop always seems to have a sale on. It can be a bit like a jumble sale at times and you need to have a good old rummage but it is worth it. It is a youthful store but I don't feel out of place there although I hit 30 this year. Also does a great range in cheap work clothes.

Okay so when tourists come to Edinburgh they love to buy tartan in any shape or form which means…read morethere is an abundance of tourist shops in the city. I normally take visitors to this store purely because its less annoying than the rest of the tourist tat shops. You know the ones I mean, the shops that blast bagpipe music out into the street all day and have See You Jimmy hats hanging off the window. For some reason these shops really annoy the locals. Thankfully Romanes and Paterson is not like that. Romanes and Paterson has been around since the 1860's, which is a good enough reason alone to support a historic business. The shop stocks cashmere, kilts, woolen goods, tartan gifts, shortbread, Edinburgh Castle Rock and whatever else it is tourists in Scotland like to buy. It really is ideal for tourists coming to Scotland who wish to purchase their souvenirs to take back home. Its much better than all those shops previously mention which just stock complete tat. There is also a cafe in the store which does a good afternoon tea and is waiter service. The only waiter service cafe on Princes Street I'm told, I guess that is probably true in a world full of Costas and Starbucks.

I noticed a rather fetching tweed jacket on a recent scout around and in comparison to other tourist shops in Edinburgh, Hector Russell is aimed more at selling clothing, and good quality clothes at that. Real wool, cashmere and other top quality materials are used in the products here and all produced in Scotland, of course. I can definitely recommend the tartan woollen scarves that they sell. I bought one last year. I refer to it affectionately as "the woollen" and it's kept me toasty ever since.

It's not unlike any of the others; you can get souvenirs, whisky, tartan covered items and shortbread in any shape your heart desires. However, it is slightly classier, and I don't recall any annoying bag pipe music. It is significantly smaller than many of the other stores up the street, so it's only really lacking in variety.

Hobbs is the height of sophisticated fashion and seems aimed at those lucky women who always look…read moresmart and effortlessly stylish with trouser suits, tailored trousers and flowing dresses. Although I can appreciate Hobbs, it isn't really my style and the prices aren't really aimed at a student budget. Hobbs is aimed at the business woman who always looks trendy and is usually very mature. My pet hate is seeing women wearing man suits and my old boss used to wear them all the time... she was a dragon by nature and the suit just made her come across like the Incredible Hulk, minus the green skin. Hobbs always have very feminine, well tailored suits that are very flattering. Hobbs is very feminine with the prints, the cuts and the style and definitely worth a look if you're looking for something formal yet you can wear it everyday.

With the wife having spent over £1500 in the Edinburgh Hobbs shop in the last month, I can safely…read morethe purchasing experience is excellent. The returning experience is, however absolutly, without doubt, shocking. I returned 2 items today for the wife, and was made to stand and watch for 15 minutes whilst the assistant, and manager both tried a d-fuzz-it comb, to try and show there was no problem. A £40 top, after a couple of weeks should not go bobbly, and ofering me seat when I complained about you doing this ... you really don't get the customer service thing do you? Unless theres a sale in it though eh? Following this they then said the pulling on the other top was "a grey area" as it might not be the fault of the fabric. This was the manager and an assistant remember. I really don't care if you can get the bobbles off and by saying it's a grey area you've as good as admitted liability. But I still had to get stroppy and start raising my voice before they finally relented and offered a credit note, obviously as there were other potential customers in the shop they did not want to lose business. So my advice, enjoy the shoppng experience, but I really hope you don't need to return anything.

They had Fake Bake tan reduced from £40 to £20 and I also got a Cath Kidston Wild Rose bath and body set reduced from £30 to £15... the discount got better when I took my items to the till to find out it was 10% off day. Result! They have a good range of premium make up including counters from Benefit, YSL, Dior, Chanel and my favourite; Lancome. In addition, they have a good range of men and women's clothing and I spent longer than I should have in their Warehouse concession where I got the most gorgeous kaftan I've even seen in my life.

I am ok with big department stores. I loose several hours checking out current trends. And cheap last season things. Debenhams is however not my favourite. The place is a mess. Dusty and frumpy. Most of the time I am in the men's section checking out the designer garb - Jasper Conran, Rocha, Levis, Maine, St George and just as many times I leave with an empty mind.. it doesn't inspire me to try things or buy things. They also have a 'kitchen' section where famous names flog their wares. ( I find TKMaxx to be more appealing to be honest..) - this may be a department store for some, but to me it is just a collection of market stalls.. Don't get me started on the canteen like restaurant on the top floor. Nope.. just don't.

Guys, similarly, can find a mixture of clothing and shoes in here but the section for men is a bit more scene than what's on offer for the ladies. The staff are really friendly and they do cracking sales pretty much all the time! Offbeat is great for people who want cool, fashionable streetwear but don't want to adhere to one extreme side of the fashion spectrum.
