Situated in the Grassmarket area of Edinburgh, Lady JoJo's Boutique is just around the corner from the Royal Mile and it is a short walk to the main shopping street in Edinburgh, Princes Street, and so it is a convenient place to reach. This store is relatively new on the Edinburgh clothing scene, and it is a definite welcome addition. I love to come here and browse the shop and admire their beautiful stock. The boutique is pretty small inside but it boasts a beautiful selection of dresses, tops, trousers and accessories. I bought an absolutely gorgeous dress here several months ago, and it cost around £50, but it is of excellent quality and I wear a lot when I go out so it is definitely good value for money. The stock changes over quite a bit, so I find that if there is something I like, its probably best to buy it there and then rather than waiting a week and finding out its not longer on sale - that has happened to me several times!! The staff are really friendly and warm too. Lady JoJo's is a great place to go to buck the trend and buy your clothes from a non-high street store.

I was drawn inside by the kitsch sign and the funky name. 'Lady JoJo's' sounded like my kind of shop. I wasn't disappointed when I stepped inside, and was greeted by the two lovely young shop assistants. The stock is sparse, which one of the said assistants explained was because they were simply testing the water to see what kind of stuff people liked best. Rails of gorgeous retro swing dresses and frilly knickers really caught my eye, as did the old fashioned dresser table adorned with gorgeous jewellery and seamed stockings. The boutique oozed with the retro glamour of Betty Paige and 1950's style, which is quite unique in Edinburgh and stocks ranges such as 'What Katie Did' and 'Love Kills'. A handmade necklace with two chunky red hearts emblazoned with 'Pin Up Girl' really caught my eye. I bought the necklace and was pleasantly surprised when it was only £8, with a 20% discount complimentary because the shop had just opened. Perfect! I will certainly be visiting in a couple of weeks when it is more established and full of gorgeous Pin Up clothes and jewellery.

They were living in a time that everything was vintage (to us, anyway). It makes me wonder why they used to sell! However, despite my praise for the other outlet's glitzy displays, this Armstrong's has a bit less pizzaz. Don't get me wrong, it's still a prime target for rummaging, and I don't tend to surface from the shop for at least half an hour. But today I was let down (like in the other store) by vaguely ignorant customer servicem and by finding a few of my clothes on the rails! A 40s inspired Haiwaiian dress, eh? That may be the case, but what the tag failed to highlight was that it was in H&M last season. Not only that, but a fair few items from my wardrobe turned up in there, to the point I felt like I was in the Truman Show. I have a really horrible jumper I wear in bed that makes me look like a creepy kids TV presenter, and was surprised to say the least when it turned up in here (although perhaps not surprised at why it is unlikely to be purchased anytime soon.) Armstrongs is always fun, but I can't deny I was a bit disappointed. But I'm still going to go back because - well, it's Armstrongs!

Nonetheless, if your into interesting and unusal clothing, this is the place to look.

The layout of this store is what I like about. With big sweeping staircases the shop is divided up and feels a little more spacious. Sometimes it's still veering towards wee girlie, but for the most part the stock is of a good quality. It's priced as such but with the majority of dresses you buy, you know they're going to last. I bought a jumper from Miss Selfridge almost ten years ago. I shit you not, ladies, it still fits like a glove and since it's black and plain, looks smart for interviews. I always go to chuck it out and give it to charity, but can't quite bring myself to since it's lasted for so long (and still looks new!) I'm such a thrift merchant, but there you go. On to the new stuff: frilly, pink and glittery, Miss Selfridge sell pretty things. And I would have to agree with Steph - this one is bigger than the Buchanan branch in Glasgow. It's also better organised, with clearer distincations made between former and casual attire. The staff were nice in here and I got some serious bargains. Miss Selfridge always come up trumps with sales, and a whole part of the shop was dedicated to just that. I managed to walk out with four items of gorgeous jewellery for 4 pounds! It almost felt like robbery, I was well chuffed. I still prefer Topshop to Miss Selfridge but considering they're both owned by Arcadia, I'd recommend it. This store in particular is a good 'un.

It's a delightful boutique geared towards an older style of fashion and a slightly older audience. The dresses and coat sets are timelessly fashionable, lending their inspiration from the elegance of the 50s. Some of the hats and skirts reminded me of how Audrey Hepburn looked in My Fair Lady when she was parading around at Ascot. The cocktail dresses look like they'd fit like a glove, and are all very high quality. They are priced accordingly, but it would definitely be worth it if you were going to a wedding. Places like Chique are few and far between these days, but it's great that this little boutqiue still exists as it has the older fashioned manner of customer service (i.e it's friendly and personal!), and the dresses are gorgeous. However, on closer inspection, I realise that this store is actually anything but dowdy and charity shop worthy. It is a boutique clothing store stocking Mother of the Bride outfits and cocktail dresses from designers such as Gloria Estelles and Linea Raffaelli. Probably not household names to any of us under 30. They have loads of lovely outfits and dresses which would suit the older lady, maybe 40 plus, and they are costly to say the least. Expect to pay upward of £160 for a dress in here, and that's the cheaper end of the spectrum. The website probably showcases the outfits better so you can have a look before you go in, the only disadvantage be that there aren't any prices on the actual clothes. Always a sure sign of an expensive shop!

My really liked the retro bags that they sell, like classic Gola and Dunlop shoulder and crossover bags. I also really liked the boom-box style bag that I spotted in the window, but at £35 it was a bit of an unnecessary luxury I couldn't afford! They have some really cool and quirky t-shirts which aren't too pricey. The staff are as you would expect, the kind of kooky and trendy peeps you would find in Topshop or Urban Outfitters. They were very nice though and didn't mind checking a size for my boyfriend in a t-shirt, even offering to ring the other store on Victoria Street.
