Despite it not being in the cheapest place on Earth, it's got to pay for it's central location somehow. I always think I'm going to eventually grow out of the clothes that Swish have to offer, but apparently "street fashion" is always something I can spare some money for. All the clothes are good quality even the the accessories are a little bit fun and "funky" (sorry, that's my least favourite word) and as I'm not particularly fond of logo tee's there's actually a large range of pretty dresses and retro sunglasses. There's very few shops that I've been a repeat customer and I know that eventually I'm probably going to have to buy "serious" work clothes. *Sigh*

I'm afraid I just can't get as excited about this shop as a lot of other reviewers have. It looks like it's going to be amazing from the outside, full of quirky clothes and accessories that make such a refreshing change from the mass-produced rubbish in the majority of shops on Princes Street. But it's one of those places where, once you get inside and start holding things up against you in the mirror, you find that none of it is quite right. Which would be ok if it were cheap - I challenge any female on this earth to honestly claim they've never bought something "because it was such a bargain" and then never worn it once. But it's not cheap, in fact it's pretty pricey. If you like this shop though, you should pop into Cookie on Cockburn Street too.

If you are looking for quirky, unique clothes, Swish is the place to go. Situated in Victoria Street, Swish is just around the corner from the Royal Mile and it is a short walk from the main shopping street in Edinburgh, Princes Street, and so it is a convenient place to reach. It is an independent clothing store and is a great place to go to buy different and unique clothes. At first glance, I initially thought this was just a T-shirt shop for men, but when I went in I was pleasantly surprised at the selection of clothes which they stocked, both for men and women. Swish sell a good selection T-shirts, cute dresses, knitwear and accessories for women. They sell a good choice of retro style bags. If you want a different, funky T-shirt with a quirky slogan, then Swish is the place to go. The prices are really reasonable here, with most items under £20. Swish is a great store to go to to buck the trend and buy clothes from a non-high street store.

Swish is an independent clothing store on Victoria Street that caters for men, women and babies. It manages to pack quite a lot into what is essentially quite a small shop. For women there are quirky and stylish dresses, tops for going out in, some knitwear and more everyday items like t-shirts and jumpers. Men are comfortably catered for with trendy t-shirts by Chunk and a really good range of messenger bags and retro bags by Gola and Dunlop. There are also laptop cases by YakPak in a variety of crazy patterns and funny babygro's with slogans and pictures (I think these are intended to amuse the adults). Prices are pretty reasonable and the stock is always up to date with the latest trends, this is one of the few shops that my boyfriend and I are both happy having a browse in.

Dick's Edinburgh - This is the Jamieson's Shetland wool fair isle jumper I purchased.

I had it in mind to buy myself a fair isle jumper (in the U.S. we'd call it a pullover sweater)…read moreduring our trip to Scotland. I did some online research before we left home and learned that to be considered authentic, one of the requirements is that it be fashioned from Shetland wool, as opposed to cashmere, merino, or lambs wool. I found a very useful thread on Reddit that listed several reputable shops in Edinburgh (our base of operations while in Scotland), including this warning: "Whatever you do, don't go into any of the tat shops." Of course, then I had to ask Google what a "tat shop" was. In the United States, my guess would have been a tattoo parlor, but that didn't make sense. A "tat shop" is a souvenir store. I made some phone calls when we got to Edinburgh. Many stores in the UK are closed on either Monday/Tuesday or Tuesday/Wednesday, so that narrowed our choices. Other stores had no fair isle jumpers in stock. Still, I was undeterred and kept calling around. After only two or three calls, I reached Dicks Edinburgh and was told that they did have exactly what I was seeking. A few hours later, after we had toured Edinburgh Castle, we hopped into a cab and went straight there. My husband and I were the only customers, and the entire staff (two women and a man) were collectively attentive to us. It took me only a few minutes to decide on the perfect jumper. It was a lovely experience from start to finish. Dicks Edinburgh is clearly a quality clothing store, and I would not hesitate to shop there again.

This store stocks a huge amount of suits in every colour imaginable. As well as some other smart clothes, like your tweed coat yah. The service was fantastic, there are few shops which offer such a high standard of service. The shop assistant was very polite and listened to what my dad was looking for and came up with a tonne of options. He gave advice and was really helpful. We settled on the second suit my Dad tried, and the best thing is they alter for free! This was the Monday and the guy said we could pick up the altered suit on Saturday. As my Dad doesn't live in Edinburgh I said I would pick it up but it would be two weeks later as I was going on holiday on Saturday. Not a problem, he organised the suit to be ready for the Wednesday. My brothers picked up their suits from another branch of Slaters and they were just as good.

My brother got his suit for his school leavers dance from Slaters and many of my friends have recently had to invest in a suit for Grad Balls and Slaters seems to be the most popular option. It also seems like the most wallet friendly option as a friend of mine got his suit for £80, I didn't realise you could get suits at such a bargain price! Prices range from under £100 to £200+ so it depends how flush you're feeling I guess. You don't have to go all out and buy a suit or kilt you can also hire them if you don't really need them all that much, just don't get carried away with the red wine.

I normally take visitors to this store purely because its less annoying than the rest of the tourist tat shops. You know the ones I mean, the shops that blast bagpipe music out into the street all day and have See You Jimmy hats hanging off the window. For some reason these shops really annoy the locals. Thankfully Romanes and Paterson is not like that. Romanes and Paterson has been around since the 1860's, which is a good enough reason alone to support a historic business. The shop stocks cashmere, kilts, woolen goods, tartan gifts, shortbread, Edinburgh Castle Rock and whatever else it is tourists in Scotland like to buy. It really is ideal for tourists coming to Scotland who wish to purchase their souvenirs to take back home. Its much better than all those shops previously mention which just stock complete tat. There is also a cafe in the store which does a good afternoon tea and is waiter service. The only waiter service cafe on Princes Street I'm told, I guess that is probably true in a world full of Costas and Starbucks.

Ahem. My friend bought her grandmother one of those fantastic post cards of sexy scottish men wearing nothing but kilts (and some even flashing some bum!). I've been far more decent, and managed to get some good deals on a cashmere sweater and some playing cards for my dad. This store is quite classy for a souvenir store, and I certainly don't feel too much shame buying presents there.
