We were blessed with beautiful May weather which allowed us to partake in all of the whimsical delight Camp Horizons has to offer which includes: - Impromptu games of gaga ball - Watching fish jump out the crystal clear lake - Petting horses, goats, donkeys, bunnies, and more - Reading on the cabin porch - Letting loose in a flower and herb garden and creating living art - Flexing archery skills - Swinging from a tree - Skits and s'mores around a camp fire - Whispering from a bunk bed ... and so much more! As an adult, it was so wonderful to see kids being kids. The staff was wonderful, kind, and patient and my super picky daughter RAVED about the food. I even saw her try things she would not touch with a ten foot pole here. I guess that's camp magic for you!

He struggled at first with homesickness, but adjusted well with the support of his counselor. He came home talking about his new friends and the fun he had with the various activities. He enjoyed the food as well. There was some amount of roughing it (said the showers were cold and the cabins small) but it is a rustic camp, after all. As parents, we thought the camp was very well organized and they regularly posted pictures on the parent portal. My son is even open to the idea of going again. That may not sound as impressive as my saying that he's begging to go again, but it's a huge step forward considering that earlier this summer, he was threatening to barricade himself in his room to avoid going.

We love it here! I've been riding since I was 5 years old (I'm almost 40 now) and a few years ago…read moremy daughter and I began riding at JREC Riding School together. I've been consistently happy with their instruction style, horses, knowledge, and programs overall. I can't imagine riding anywhere else. The horses are all incredibly well cared for and LOVED, and each receives personalized care depending on it's needs. It warrants mentioning: I saw a very old review posted to Yelp that sounded horrible (from 2012 by a Janet C.). That review does NOT match what goes on at JREC. I can only guess that the reviewer MUST have be referring to a different location, and got confused when posting on here. Or perhaps there was a different owner/operator of the barn at that time, but that is not a reflection of the Riding School at JREC today.

We do the weekly riding lessons (every Tuesday) and participate in the family-friendly competitions throughout the year. One other thing worth mentioning is that all of the horses are happy, clean, and healthy. They are extremely well-cared for! It's amazing to see the relationships that the horses develop with each person. It's a great place.

They are a Motorsport camp, so all things car related, perfect for my 12 year old who is obsessed with cars. They also host an Astro camp for those whose interest is space. While my son was there they did tons of driving on and off road, built rockets and launched them, did star gazing with the telescopes they have there, learned car mechanics, and so much more, including regular camp stuff: bonfires, swimming, sports, etc. Another pro was the ban of electronics; no iPads, video games, phones, etc. They keep the kids so busy, they won't miss them. One nice touch was the Thank You card they had the kids write home to parents. A courtesy I have always had my son perform, a good lesson in gratitude. Everyone working there was very personable, kind and helpful. They posted photos of the days activities each night. Any email to camp staff, both leading up to and during camp, was always responded to in a timely manner. This camp was perfect for my kid. He really thrived here. I was nervous, it being his first sleepaway experience, but he had no problems whatsoever and made friends easily with other campers. He's already looking forward next year. I may have to stowaway in his suitcase so I can go too!

Our group of @15 or so wanted a place away from everything for the weekend so we rented the…read moreHomestead Cabin. The yard was nice and flat for our fun and games. A short walk away was a cross and benches for Devotions, meditation or a Sunday service. The cabin had a fully equipped kitchen. There were Two full bathrooms and one even had a bathtub. In the middle of the cabin was a sitting area with two loveseats, a couch and large chair. Across from that in the middle were several large round tables and chairs. The cabin was equipped with a large screen tv. We only used it to show a short picture presentation,so not sure if it had cable or an antenna. We were there in November just past when the leaves hit full glory but they were still vibrant and colorful. This is a great camp. In other areas they have lots to do. Something for everyone at Westview on the James.

Our son…read morewent to camp last week, and on his last night (Thursday) we were called by the fire and rescue squad at 12:30 am that our son was in in ambulance on his way to St. Mary's hospital. Several children were sprayed in the eyes and face with bug spray. My husband met our son at the emergency room and was there from 1-4 a.m. WE NEVER RECEIVED a phone call from the camp explaining what had happened. Not that night, nor first thing in the morning. We called the camp on Friday around 11 am to get some questions answered. A staff member answered the phone and said the director was not there and he will call us back. He also mentioned it was a "late night at the camp" and we obviously knew about the situation. I was floored, this was the response from anybody who works at a child's camp. A parent has every right to call and ask why there child was rushed to the emergency room in the middle of the night! After that phone call, we went to pick up his belongings at the camp and still had no clarity on exactly what happened that night. A staff member said we would get a call on Monday from the director. We finally spoke yesterday, (Tuesday) and he had the audacity to ask what we could possible have to say to him! He said we were harassing his staff by leaving messages to call us! He said we were contacted by the fire squad, and took no responsibility that the camp should have called us too. We still do not know the entire story of what happened. Denny was dismissive and rude and I cannot believe a "church camp" has a man like this in charge. The way he handled this situation that was scary for our family is not at all the kind of man Jesus would be proud of.
