I came for dinner after my Dr's. appointment and this time most tables were taken and many take out orders being picked up! Most customers that night must be regulars because the owner, Andy, was sitting with many and giving hugs, handshakes hello and goodbye to others. Tonight I started with the fried Shumai again and it was just as flavorful as the first time I had it! Main course was a favorite dish of mine. Beef prepared in a very mild garlic sauce with onions. I have to say New Kanda NAILED IT!!! Honestly, the flavor was over the top! The beef were large pieces and so tender, succulent, no knife was needed!to cut. I could cut everything with the side of my fork. This dish was perfect on all levels and the absolute best I have ever had! Now comes dessert....I ordered the fried banana. I asked Andy if ice cream came with the dessert. It did not but he graciously added it, free of charge. Andy also brought me a squeeze bottle of their honey because I like the dessert with extra honey. This way, I could add enough to my liking! I cannot rave enough about New Kanda! Was one of our favorite restaurants in hen it was in Bellmore, great food and reasonably priced- I highly recommend this restaurant.

The new name has renovated the whole menu. Now it is all you can sushi for 29.99 for dinner and 24.99 for lunch. No price can be beaten by that when everything has went up so much. The only concern is if you don't live around the area, it is a long drive to get there. The service was super fast as food came out quickly. There were many different kind of special roll that you wouldn't even know which one to get. The space was a bit outdated and the lighting was kinda of dark. Game on, kids wanted sushi - maki combo - Done! (nine novelty rolls with all sorts of tobiko, tempura, crunchies, spicy tuna, eel, avocado, kani, yellow-tail on top - kinda stuff). Each are $12/$13 so you save literally a few dollars by ordering the combo $105 instead of $109, ya, I did the math. The sushi was ok. **other dishes** I couldn't decide so just ordered four dishes, nothing wrong with Chinese food leftovers right? Did Hunan pork, Szechuan beef, Kung pao shrimp, and chicken with eggplant in garlic sauce. All the veggies were crisp and fresh. I can't say there was much discernible on the styles of the dishes - except the coloring. Hunan was a bit more Orange-y in color, Szechuan was browner in color with a dried chili or two with some peppercorns, the Kung pao shrimp was in a more orange/red-ish sauce, nuts packed separately. None of these dishes had any spice whatsoever. Not a drop - and I asked for extra spicy. Good Hunan spicy pork should be suicidal. The chicken and eggplant was really good. Decent Asian food, we got a shrimp tempura roll to start which was good, the yaki udon with chicken, crispy prawns with steamed broccoli and XO sauce seafood dish. The yaki udon was my favorite, a ton of flavor and veggies. The seafood dish was decent, lobster tails were ok but there were more than 2 jumbo shrimp so that was better than some other places I've been to. Last night I had a great meal with my dad and a few of his friends. My first pick is usually going to Joe's Shanghai or to Xaga but we were invited as our plans originally fell through. I was wildly impressed with how quickly they accommodated the party of 4 to a table of 6 so quickly, there was no wait to be seated yet every table but 1 or 2 was full. It didn't end there. While it was packed it wasn't incredibly loud and you were able hear the person across or diagonal from you at the table. There was no shortage of choices. Dishes ordered ranged from Peking Duck (my dish) ($22 for 1/2) to tangerine chicken and combination platters (ranging from $15-$22?) which came with a soup or a salad. The duck was outrageously tasty just a tad salty but I was indulging. Dessert was the fried ice cream ($2.50?) and I had a glass of Sauvignon blanc ($8). I completely enjoyed my meal, as did everyone. There were minor hiccups (one dish was cold) as expected being Christmas but they took care of everything right away. As a Five Towns native who's explored Boston's Chinatown extensively, I take Chinese food pretty seriously, so trust me when I say that this place delivers -- always. We've turned a number of our friends here in Merrick onto Kanda, and they all each have a favorite menu item, which is a testament to how good this place really is. Moved to merrick last year and continue to look for solid takeout sushi. I would say I'm a sushi snob and love Kotobuki in Roslyn and think that is the best in Long Island. We tried Kanda for the first time tonight. It was great. We shared the sushi and sashimi for 2. Sushi was very fresh and high quality. Sashimi pieces were large as they should be. They do not skimp as most of the places we have tried around merrick have. Highly recommend as will definitely takeout again next week. I just hope it will be as good as it was tonight. read more

From the outside this spot may look unimpressive, but the food speaks for itself. The fish is so fresh and the sashimi melts in your mouth. They have a ton of reasonably priced special rolls to choose from so you could try something different every time if you wanted to. My only criticism is the size of the special rolls are a little smaller than I'm used to, however the price is also less than their competitors in the area. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED 4.5 STARS Today, on 12/22/16, needing to kill some time while waiting for my car to get a windshield replaced in a repair shop just across Merrick Road, I had the distinct pleasure of trying this very good and reasonably priced Asian fusion restaurant. The restaurant features Japanese, Chinese and Thai options. It offers a wide variety of Sushi and creative rolls. It had been on my "to do" list for quite some time. I was the first customer at 11:30. Andy, the owner, greeted me pleasantly and led me to the small and very attractive bar area. He handed me the TV remote and graciously told me to change the channel to one of my choice while he and his staff took an additional two minutes to finish cleaning. I started with a Lychee Martini ($10.00). I enjoyed it immensely. It was better than the one I had at Monsoon a few weeks ago. I then ordered the Chirashi on the lunch menu ($12.00) which came with a Salad and Miso Soup. The Salad was fresh, pleasantly dressed and flavorful. The Miso Soup was mildly flavored, well seasoned and very good. The Chirashi was the star of my lunch. It consisted of 5 or 6 selections of shrimp and fish with Sushi Rice on the side. The fish and shrimp were strikingly fresh and delicious. The Salmon was amazing. The Rice was perfectly cooked. If you love Sushi, you will feel at home here. I root for underdogs. I had the sashimi lunch with came with 12 pieces of sashimi including two pieces of six different types of fish for $12. It also came with salad and soup. Enjoyed a delicious meal tonight with friends! The owner and staff welcomed our large group of 11. Service was attentive and friendly. Winnie took very good care of us! I started with the ISO Yuki Maki Roll (Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, masago wrapped with soy paper, topped with mango and mango Sauce) Was surprisingly light, and fresh yet not too sweet. I then chose the Hawaii Roll (Lobster Tempura & Asparagus topped with fresh mango, avocado and mango sauce ) I appreciated the "crispy " tempura in the center surrounded by the softness of the avocado and mango. Again not overly sweet but fruity. A friend had the Dancing Eel Roll, which is shrimp tempura, topped with eel and black tobiko. She shared a delicious bite as I had not had eel before! This will have to be my next meal. It was flavorful without being over powerful and had a nice crisp. I am looking forward to going here again! New Kanda used to be a family favorite for us, but after tonight we will not be returning. As we always do, our family called to place an order for pick up- we were celebrating my sister's birthday. Tonight, we had specifically ordered an appetizer of fried calamari, shrimp tempura, beef chow fun, and a maki combination "D" roll. When we picked up the food and got home, I was shocked to open the bag. The first thing I pulled out was the fried calamari. It literally looked like someone had gotten hungry while cooking it, and ate half the container. If I were to have taken a measuring cup and placed the calamari inside, it MAY have equated to 1/4 cup. For $9?? Completely unacceptable. Moving on to the sushi roll- Maki combo was okay but personally, I didn't think the fish tasted as fresh as it normally is. I found myself having to force myself to finish it because the taste was off. The shrimp tempura was also totally a joke. The amount of shrimp equated to the size of a pencil eraser- most of the filler was rice and avocado. I'm wondering the restaurant was lacking ingredients?? Either way if this was the case, the food shouldn't be served. My mom and I called the restaurant and spoke to the manager mainly to complain about the calamari. I am usually never one to complain about food and make it a big deal, but in this case I felt it was really not right and it was important to say something. The manager claimed that the calamari was of "high quality" which is why the quantity is small. I'm sorry, but I'd rather go to a diner to spend the same amount and get 4x the amount- the taste was no different or special compared to other calamari I have tried. The manager kept laughing when trying to work it out- not sure if this was out of nervousness. In the end, he at least offered us $5 credit the next time we return. Excellent sushi...my wife and I went here yesterday during the thunderstorm around 8pm after using our boat. We both wanted sushi but didn't want a lot of rice so we ordered the cucumber rolls instead and they were amazing. Really tasty sushi and fresh. Only thing I didn't like was they were going to charge me .50 for a small to go cup of spicy mayo which I thought was ridiculous since I had just spent $50 on sushi. That is absurd. Pick your extra charges better. If someone orders a small sushi roll for under $7 maybe charge .50 for a side of mayo but when someone spends $50, throw it in. Update - we just went for dinner for the first time with our newborn. We never actually ate in the restaurant we have always gotten it to go, but it was nice to eat it there for a change. read more

Take out only review! My husband and I were grabbing a couple of drinks locally and all of a sudden I was craving sushi. It was getting late so I searched nearby and found this spot. Good reviews. Solid pictures. Online ordering discount. Couldn't pass it up. Now, looking back, I wish I did. I ordered a few pieces of salmon sushi and a signature roll. My husband ordered 2 signature rolls. We placed the order online and picked it up a little while after. Everything was packaged nicely and looked good but now I know, looks can be deceiving. My husband enjoyed his rolls, but was not blown away. I, on the other hand, was beyond disappointed. The signature roll I ordered was supposed to have lobster. When I got home, I realized they had replaced the high quality lobster with lesser quality shrimp. Why was I charged for a premium product when I wasn't given it? My husband found a bone in his roll and both of my pieces of salmon had scales and the quality was not the best. For over $40 worth of food we ended up disappointed. Maybe it was an off night, but now that Kashi opened up across the street, there's no reason to order from here again. read more

New Kanda (I catch myself calling it New Panda every time. Damn rhyming!) is a solid sushi joint. Having dined in as well as had take-out sushi, both of my experiences were positive ones. Their service is fast and efficient, especially when it comes to picking up my food on the way home from work. I don't have to wait longer than I'm told. (Which I know is expected but hey sometimes they don't make it until you actually walk in.) I ordered a Philly Roll (among a few others) and there was a decent amount of salmon to cream cheese ratio. They are pretty generous with their portions of fish in the rolls that I have gotten thus far. Inside it definitely has that "lounge" feel. With big booths and low, cool lighting it really sets the relaxing mood. Each time I have been here the staff has been nothing but friendly. Wonderful food. I'll lead off with that. We ordered 5 rolls and four appetizers and ended up slightly hungry still, normally if we go to get sushi and spend $100, we walk out very full. Ordering take out, we were all still quite hungry afterward. The amount of food is significantly less, if you plan on sushi I'd go to the sushi restaurant instead of take out. Let's begin with the appetizers, the pork dumplings were delightful pan fried to perfection. Not too crisp and overall delicious. The blue crab avocado was splendid, deep flavors highlighted by the fat of the avocado and the perfect spice to open a meal. I did not taste the taco sunomomo, however my brother claims it was good. The rolls were delicious however for takeout you seem to get less than when you order in the restaurant. The spider roll, in my eyes a staple roll. Well fried soft shell crab, well flavored and crisp. My only complaint was we only got six pieces. The robert roll was wonderful, needed the sauce on it to have the full effect. The Hawaiian roll was good, too sweet for my taste when it comes to sushi however. The Twister roll is another of my favorites typically however their interpretation was not necessarily my favorite The yummy roll as well was the largest issue in the order. The "grilled blue crab on top" was not present, and unfortunately the roll itself was not up to standard. The highlight of this roll was the sauce on top. read more

Unfortunately, I am writing a negative review about a place my family and I have enjoyed over the last six months or so. We used to drive by New Kanda all the time and never gave it second thought, but upon the recommendation of a friend, we tried it and were surprised. The food was great! The sesame chicken was so saucy and good, great sushi, and delicious appetizers. It is also reasonably priced and the wait staff is friendly I would say we have gone or taken out there at least once every two weeks since. However, tonight my family ordered in and were so disappointed and upset. The soup was watery, the spare ribs had no taste, the beef was disgusting and the chicken (which we order almost EVERY time) was totally different. When we went to pick up, there was a huge amount of people waiting to be seated and the restaurant was packed. That does not excuse the poor food today. Just because you are busy, the quality of your food should not change. I now have family members reluctant to eat this again because of how awful it was tonight.
