Awesome pub. Lovely food but it's expensive so I only tend to eat here in special occasions.

A large party was booked here for my MIL's birthday. Despite being ripe with taxidermy, the chef…read morewas very happy to make me a special vegan meal. Let me tell you, everyone was very happy with their pre-ordered set meals, but I've never been so well catered for with my "special request" meals. The starter was much like the dairy version, a thick, earthy mushroom soup that was amazing. Instead of mushrooms on toast I had mushrooms on mushrooms and an avocado version of a Caprese salad. The show-stopper was the main of FIVE different mini dishes (fish plate had four). Including: a roasted aubergine stack, herbed rice, roasted mix vegetable stack, roasted beetroot, and curried sweet potatoes. Visually appealing and tasted very flavourful due to the freshness. The only let down was the dessert (it always is). A bowl of fruit. I know this is a preferred dish for many people, but when others are feasting on trifles and chocolate courses and even a fruit crumble, I become a very green-eyed vegan indeed. But of the quality of the starter and main, I can't complain too much (only that tiny bit). Service was pleasant, the restaurant is old pub chick, nothing to complain about. I later learned the chef, Antony Worrall Thompson, doesn't have the most gleaming of popular reputations. Since the whole family has experienced this restaurant and his great food, they completely eschew the media's ramblings (as they usually do). So don't let that put you off. Seriously, I was super impressed with my food!! 5 stars for caring about my diet, rising to the challenge and smashing it! *Look for the fencing straw pig! Cute!

Went on the spur of the moment for dinner. Was quite quiet for a Thursday. Thought the chefs menu…read morewas pedestrian so went for the steak option: chateaubriand. It was a really good piece of beef ( and we're fussy) the accompanying veggies were tasty and presentation was good. Along with a good bottle of wine we had a great evening. Oh, the sticky toffee pudding was good too. When we're in the UK and want beef, we'll be going here.

We had a family meal on a Saturday with 7 people booked in. The pub was almost empty. I'm not…read moresurprised. The food took ages to come out and I ordered a lamb shank. When it came out it was barely warm. The cream potatoes was actually mashed potatoes. The lamb was cold and dry to be honest. My child ordered a calamari as his main course because the children menu was not very appetising so I don't blame him. It was so rubbery and over cooked. It's clearly something out from the freezer and the batter was three times as thick as the calamari. Then my sticky toffee pudding was again barely warm and dried. It was so disappointing. They served good food before the changed of management. The pub has no atmosphere whatsoever. When I asked if I can have the home made Mayo (which was advertised served with the white baits) instead of sweet chilli sauce as my 6yrs old child doesn't like spicy food. I was told No. only Mayo in the sachets. We spent over £250 tonight and I don't think i will go back there in a hurry. The menu was not cheap and I don't mind paying it if it is half decent food. Very disappointing all round. Sorry.

INCOMPETENCE: noun; the inability to do something successfully. That sums up the staff of this…read morerestaurant 100%. Whoever gave the first review for this place must work here. We had a decently large party (8), but had no problem giving us a table. The room we were in though was small and had 30+ people other than us in it which is far too many because the acoustics were awful. Also the lighting constantly changed from dim to bright every couple minutes and was very distracting and annoying. We arrived at 7 and were ask about our drinks roughly 15 minutes later. Then it took another 45 minutes (yes nearly exactly 45 minutes) to take our orders after asking our order to be taken. I ordered a swordfish with the meal being described as a well sized steak (I'm 6'5" 220lb, and eat a lot). At exactly an hour and 43 minutes after arriving I received my swordfish which was probably 4oz instead of the well sized dish I was told about. I ate it in probably 30 seconds, not satisfied and disappointed. My sister who is 115lb ate the same dish in around 3 minutes. tl;dr this restaurant has servers who are slow, incompetent, and unknowledgeable. The food is average at best and I wouldn't wish my worst enemy the same experience I had here. We should have gone to the chippy instead. This review is written by a professional server.
