Don't come expecting a gourmet experience, but this place serves excellent pub food, in large…read morequantities. My fish and chips order came out as a giant piece of battered cod that looked like a beached whale across my plate. My husband's hamburger was stacked too high to actually bite into (bless the British, they never quite got the hang of how a burger is supposed to work). And all of it was well prepared and it the spot after a long day of walking the Herriot Way. Best of all - the fish and chips was available gluten free! Made my day!

This is a really nice place for a drink or a meal, it has a lovely cosy atmosphere, old fashioned and traditional, and yet trendy at the same time. It can get very, very busy at weekends, as it's such a popular place to go for a drink. We went for a meal not too long ago, we went early in the evening to avoid any rush (and because we didn't want to leave the children with my Mum too late into the evening). I'm a vegetarian and was really pleased to see they offered a vegeburger, and it was absolutely delicious. Hubby had some kind of meat pie, which he thought was great, too. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere was really nice. The toilets were clean and pleasant, too. The only thing I didn't like about the visit, was that they took my credit card, and kept it behind the bar. I think this was because I ordered a drink each and a main meal, but hadn't decided about a dessert, so they kept the tab open for later - but I don't see why they needed to actually keep hold of my card, and I think it was rather risky, actually. On programmes like The Real Hustle they always say you shouldn't let your card out of your sight, and yet here they expect you to just hand it over and leave it in a glass behind the bar until you've finished your meal. Aside from that, it was a lovely evening, and I would recommend the Black Bull to anyone.

Main couses were scampi, beef casserole and dumplings and a burger of some sort. They get a 6/10. The food is good and reasonably priced but maybe not exceptional but then its only pub food. The place itself is recently refurbished and my only problem with it is its too large and too open by which I mean its like eating in a waiting room. Also there was no heating on and two of us were cold. The staff could be friendlier. The waitresses tended to plonk the food in front of you and basically not speak to you at all. The person on the till could be a little more welcoming. Generally a good meal but staff need some more training perhaps. Its maybe because they are young and unused to speaking to strangers! So nothing much wrong with the food but room for improvement. Why not give it a try.
