During the visit I told him the remote was already lighting up, so it didn't need batteries. It made NO sense to change them to begin with. While there, I asked him about fixing a loose halogen light, and he told me it was too complicated. When I explained that I had fixed them before, he then acknowledged how much I know about my fireplace, but still did not help. He just provided me a link to some glue. Nowhere during his visit did he exhibit expertise that warranted a $399 visit "for his time" (his words). After calling and emailing multiple times with absolutely no response, I texted Lance who was, it turns out, the owner, although this had never been conveyed. When we got on the phone, he was in a bad mood, called it an "f-in" (but used the real word) Monday and then proceeded to talk about how awesome he is, how much his time is worth, how many awards he has won, etc. He also said, "You are one of those people who lives in a world where you think the customer is always right, and you have no clue about the real world." He was so rude and disrespectful. My entire call with him was to understand why the invoice was $399. You can tell I'm not the first person to ever question this based on his response. I would NEVER use this company again. His work is overpriced, I'm not convinced he understands fireplaces since he changed batteries in a remote that was clearly working, communication is terrible, and his fees are not clear at all. Archer was one of several quotes - and be careful when dealing in this area- but came in as one of the lower ones. However, replacement of a gas fireplace is NOT a cheap project. Patrick Archer was our salesman and Sean did the work with one of his assistants. Watching the installation, I felt a bit better about the price tag - Sean was literally going in and out of a 10" by10" hole - multiple times - he is a human ferret. They pulled everything out including the exterior vent (the 10 x 10 hole), replaced the exterior siding, installed the new unit, fixed the drywall, hooked everything up to the gas line, and re-tiled. The work was excellent and was a lot more involved than I would have thought. The only complication was that initially the logs would not reliably light, but the company was responsive and sent out a tech who adjusted the positioning which fixed it (something about airflow). And we don't have the manual for the logs which makes the remote functionality a bit hit and miss sometimes since we don't have the instructions, but we're working on it and have a request in to the company.
