For those looking into going back to school or for first timers, look no further Nevada State is definitely the school to go to. After being out of school nearly for 8 years, I finally went back. Although, I chose this school as my top choice after doing extensive research, I found out that NSU was number one for nursing. Even if you are not going for nursing, I definitely would recommend NSU for several reasons. The biggest thing that I have learned about attending college campuses is to make it enjoyable, yet having students want to come to school. I just literally hit my first year attending as a transfer, and the professors and advisors want to see you succeed. Compared to other colleges that I have attended, NSU has that support you need. No matter what subject you're taking, all the professors try and help you pass. No matter how hard the subject is. While the professors give you all the resources to pass. You also have your advisors who do not sugar coat. They honestly tell you the truth of what you can and cannot handle. If you are looking for a school that is not just all around academically, but you want affordability this campus is cheaper than attending private or even out of state. Best part is, classes are smaller and they put a cap on classes, especially that have lab as well as the co-requisite.From experience, the smaller class size allows you to learn, know your peers and have that one to one more with the professor. Parking is also free.so for those that live far, definitely a school to attend. read more

Extremely frustrating and disappointing experience with Nevada State College. My advisor instructed me to reach out directly to the department head to ask whether I could take History 251 and History 499 concurrently. I did exactly that, and the department head approved the request. Based on that approval, I planned my schedule and attempted to enroll. When enrollment opened, I was suddenly blocked from registering and told I needed to submit a petition. After jumping through multiple hoops, the petition was denied. I then appealed the decision, and that appeal was also denied by the "dean." It is very hard to believe my appeal was actually reviewed. It is completely unacceptable for a student to receive direct approval from a department head, only to have it taken away later. This directly affects graduation timelines, finances, and stress levels. If I weren't so close to graduating, I would seriously consider transferring to another school. This college is becoming increasingly expensive, and many students are simply trying to finish their degree and move on. Nevada State needs to do better at honoring approvals and supporting students instead of creating unnecessary barriers. read more

I've taken Calculus and Biology classes at NSC during the summer - pretty intense 6-week semester. I've taken a Biology class at CSN but I had to drop it because the instructor gave me the "this is just my part-time job and I don't really care" vibe. And I've heard the same complaint from friends that went there. The instructors at NSC will push you to try harder. Sure, it seems like a lot of work and it can be difficult but in the end, you'll be glad the instructors teach the way they do. You'll retain information for years...it's not just about memorizing a bunch of things but more thinking and applying knowledge. The instructors seem tough and some of them have made people cry in class or get really upset/ offended. You're here to learn, think and work hard. If you're lazy and not self-motivated, this is not the school for you. They're expanding and adding more buildings. When I first went here, it was only the Dawson building and the LAS building was being built. Now, they have the NSE building and a student center. Campus security is also very helpful unlike other schools' who's busy issuing parking tickets and offers zero assistance when you need them! I was on campus at 5am to avoid EDC traffic and I had an exam. I was reading my notes in the parking lot and it was pretty dark. Campus security let me in the building and my room so I could study. I wish Nevada State got more recognition for how great their school is. I've attended both UNLV and CSN, and Nevada State College definitely beats all of them. I think people overlook it because it is a newer school (established in 2002) and it's not exactly the closest school to the city but I believe it has great potential to be one of the best in the future. I live in the north side and mind you, the drive from there can take up to 45 minutes since the school is located in deep Henderson. However, I don't mind because the tuition is reasonable, most classes are online, and FREE parking! I have never had any issues with financial aid which I know is always a big concern for any college student. They are helpful and all the times they told me they would call me back, they always do. I'm also always able to schedule an appointment with my advisor which I always had an issue with at UNLV and CSN. The classes are small which I find helps students have a better learning environment because the professors pay attention to your needs. The professors I've had are all super helpful and actually want you to succeed. Of course since it is a new school, it's still growing and there are only a few clubs and few sports you can join. There is a small gym with limited machines and weights and a small cafeteria at the student union. The library is a unique one since all the books provided are e-books. There is literally only four buildings in the campus but I know they are trying to expand. If you're considering on attending college in town, definitely check out Nevada State College! read more

Yelp 100 Challenge 14' * 30/100 Quaint new-ish campus located south of Las Vegas with open views of bare mountains and an absence of the glam city vibe. College students who aren't in luck with registering for their desired course at the local community college for summer or think UNLV fees are a little too burdensome on the wallet, Nevada State is a great go-to. Because it's so new, rest assured the campus is spotless, if not what I would call a little sparse. It's quite a walk to get from one building to another. Plenty of comfy couches at the Liberal Arts and Science building for studying and a balcony on the first floor that overlooks the city. As far as the classes go, I appreciate the small class size which is particularly important for an organic chemistry course. The professor is very hands on and is able to give personal attention to students. I do not know about getting a bachelor's degree here but have had a number of nursing friends who got hired right after graduating and passing their NCLEX with flying colors. If there should be a concern, it's getting here that may pose as an inconvenience for many. In the meantime, while I wait to take my roadtest, I still have to take the bus here - 3 buses to be exact. So you can imagine how early I have to be out of the house just to make it in time for my 8am class. What this boils down to is that NSC gets a two thumbs up from me. So far so good. I'm a returning student trying to navigate the whole application process. Most of the staff either by phone or in person are rather indifferent but that's to be expected with any bureaucracy that lives off OPM (other people's money). I did reach out to leadership because I wasn't getting my help accessing the catalog, which is strictly online. Someone contacted me promptly and while I solved the problem myself that person was at least making the effort. Moral is - always move up the food chain if your not getting results. Previously I'd taken several classes here and was always happy with the number of classes offered as well as the quality of instruction. read more

I personally loved this college. I got 2 bachelors degrees here. Considering I had many classes here, I only have a few bad professors. Most of them were passionate, kind hearted and well organized. I enjoyed the small campus because you don't pay for parking, small class sizes, and its easy to get to classes. I'm at UNLV now and miss Nevada State. UNLV has been a disorganized mess. Great school! Recent transfer student from CA. I initially got accepted into UNLV for pre-nursing. RN programs are VERY competitive and with UNLV having over 30K students while NSC probably has 15% of that number I decided to transfer here after one semester! Instantly fell in love with the small school vibe. I don't want to be one out of 150 people for class, which makes it more rich as the instructors actually know who you are!! Don't get me wrong, the nursing program here is extremely competitive as well but your odds are a bit higher here. Oh yeah and the cost is like 1/2 of what you'd be getting into on the other side of town which is a major plus. We use the same clinical simulation center as the other school and we're all still getting a Bachelor's in nursing. Highly recommend If you want to save some bucks for a fully accredited BSN. Bring your A game because it's tough, aim for 3.5 cumulative and above! School is nice, free parking and the teachers have been great. read more

The financial aid office is a disaster. Always the run around and no one knows the answers. Doesn't make you feel too confident when the officials are unsure. Super hard to go to school because of the lack of support and communication. I've often felt like I'm fighting to go to school, and this isn't a third world country. Like many, I'm taking out loan after loan which means that I'm paying them a lot of money to attend, so why aren't they making it easier for me as far as paper-work and communication? The professors are 100% hit or miss. I've had INCREDIBLE professors or terribly bad shouldn't be doing this for a job professors. No in-between. Good luck. Consider UNLV. I'm taking my first class at NSC this semester after primarily being a UNLV/CSN student the past few years. I'm taking a BIO class here to save myself another drive out to UNLV each week. The campus is small, but new and well put together. My teacher seems knowledgable so far, and the campus seems well-equipped as far as the BIO department goes. Class size is about 30- mostly people returning to school. Cost-wise, it's slightly less expensive than UNLV... but honestly, not sure if the price difference is worth the hassle in dealing with their student services and such. This review probably would have been far more positive had I not had an awful experience with their bookstore. I purchased a $400 textbook there yesterday, and then realized I had the option of getting it as an online version for far less. I called to inquire about returning the book (which has yet to be removed from the package), and they refused. Absolutely ridiculous policy. I might as well have spent that to take the class at UNLV. I won't be taking classes here again for this experience alone. I'd rather spend the extra money and go elsewhere. read more

I started (did not finish) a second Bachelor's degree in nursing at NSC (I'm starting law school in Missouri in the fall... realized I didn't wanna be a nurse OR a music teacher, which is what my initial Bachelor's was in... also realized that I don't wanna have kids in Nevada). It's not NSC's fault that I left the school, but that being said, I have definite opinions about NSC. There were things I simultaneously loved and hated about NSC. I had one AMAZING teacher, Dr. Duong, who knows (by his own admission) "everything about everything ever." I also had a teacher who admitted going to the strip club with some of the "bros" in my class, then proceeded to give only those individuals A's. All this to say, the teachers run the gamut. The students seem pretty collegial, and I enjoyed the small class sizes and friendly atmosphere. However, the school has this "ick factor" for me that I just can't put my finger on. Maybe it's because I'm originally from a state with many more options in higher education to choose from, but this school feels like something is lacking. I guess my expectations are too high, but if I'm paying for it (out of state tuition... ouch!), I have a right to an opinion. I like what NSC is trying to do. It's nice to have an alternative to UNLV and CSN, and contrary to what others have said, I actually had a PLEASANT time with financial aid versus any other school I've attended. Anthony handled my case (it was complicated with loans because I already had a Bachelor's and was reaching my aggregate limit), and I have to say, I was pleased with the speed and ease of the process. True, sometimes I would call and have to leave a message. However, in all fairness to the staff, you can just TELL if you visit the school that it's gonna be that way. The place is small. It is what it is. I have dealt with worse, that's for sure. Overall, I think the school just has some growing pains to go through. I don't feel like they have hit their stride just yet. The school probably could be something fantastic, but it's just so-so right now. It'll be interesting to see how it changes in the future, whether for the better or the worse. read more

I have been going to this school since I graduated high school and I love their approach to teaching. It is not a fancy school, but it is a school where you can receive a good education at an affordable price. I have made amazing friends here and overall have had an amazing experience. NSC is a new school but in time I have no doubt it will be a major school. The instructors are really passionate about what they teach and you can see it. The price is really nice, the campus is inviting, and the staff aren't intimidating. Glad I chose NSC over UNLV as my college. The oldest building (not including Dawson) was built in 2008, and the other two were built in 2015, so the technology is relatively modern. They also give plenty of useful resources such as tutoring and academic advising. There's construction going on right now, which means they're expanding soon! FYI: If you are a TRANSFER student their is a MANDATORY 60 credit residency to get a Bachelors. So one can take all the cheaper and closer location classes you can at Community College and Yes it will go towards your degree to where you transfer too, but there is still a 60 credit residency requirement for NSC. Same goes for UNLV. Basically, if you are a transfer student from Community College with 60 credits from that institution, stop while you are ahead, so you can transfer and start earning residency credit. It's upsetting and will set you back because NSC does not offer all classes all the time or on-line or in the evening. It's a smaller campus than UNLV so staff can be flexible with you and some classes can be done as an independent study with a staff member. NSC will "try" to help you. UNLV, the bigger school, may not be so flexible. Talk to TRANSFER advisors and counselors and talk about this in specific. I did not know that! If I would have, I would have chosen the closer campus and even if more expensive school, UNLV for convenience and more class availability. NSC is in Henderson so its FAR from us NLV people. My niece goes to an Arizona University straight out of High School, but for TRANSFER students they allow up to 90 transfer credits and maybe SDSU in California too. I would recommend this school to anyone who wants a great education with better than CSN quality & cheaper than UNLV prices. This school is not worth the money. Extreamly lazy and unhelpful. I've attended CSN, which I loved and wanted to attend UNLV but thought it was too expensive. NSC was the middle run of the two, with all NSC hidden extra fees it all adds up to be as expensive as UNLV or very close to it. The main difference I've seen is the helpfulness of the staff. UNLV staff are extreamly helpful and go out of their way to answer any questions and help you with whatever it is that you need. NSC staff is extreamly lazy, they will not call you back, they reply I'm financial aid by email or a call center. Call center can't do anything but send email or try and push to a supervisor and when you email they are short, unhelpful and very rude. My experience is horrible and could have been fixed easily if someone would hve gotten off their ass and don't just a little work. My degree plan was wrong, their fault, I lost my loan a week after accepting it because of this, drove up to fix it and was told I'd be re awarded. After a month and a half of calling every day, sending in ridiculous documentation over and over, waiting on phone calls and emails the never came, and dealing with an insane amount of rudeness for their mess up I am now forced to drop my classes and push my degree plan and career off another 6 months. Noone there cares, they speak to you like your some type of burden, they act ignorant making you wonder how they have this position in the first place and the only people worth a damn are I'm pretty sure student workers....because their students and understand how much attending college means to you. Any medical/Nurse class you take has a fee that almost doubles the tuition fee and that doesn't include the fancy new building fees and a ton of other little ones that add up to a very large fee when all said and done. I would advise anyone considering NSC to just drive a bit or do what it takes to attend UNLV. It is an extreamly helpful caring and more importantly highly accredited college. Why pay the same for a degree below what you can get at UNLV. UNLV also offers a crazy amount of classes and if you can't get it first go...appeal because they care enough to fight for you even if you don't meet all requirments fully. Just thought I'd write so that someone else doesn't get screwed by trusting in Nevada States College I care bs....they just want the money like all the other B or C rated schools. You want your money's worth, to not pay bs hidden fees or to be treated with respect and feel like someone actually cares about your education....UNLV. So I normally dont leave any bad reviews. But this school seems dishonest. Applied at this school to attend their Horticulture program that is advertised in the schools website. Couldnt find dates and times for the summer session once I was accepted and paid the fee. Was told today that they stopped that program awhile ago. The guy said he wasnt sure why It hasnt been taken down the site. So I said thats kind of misleading. So he gave me the registrars number to get a refund for the application fee. She tells me that before you apply theres a statement that says non refundable. So I told her that the school is also offering that program in the website and you are promoting something that no longer exist. So the school is at fault not me. Ill definitely report it to the VA. I dont want fellow vets getting screwed by a dishonest/misleading establishment. Its not even about the money, its stealing from people by offering a product that does not exist. read more

And the people in the petitions office are never even there during business hours? So you guys don't answer the phone but say in the recordings to come down and stop in during business hours but are not even there. I have attended NSC for the past year and to be honest, I love it. I am a non-traditional student who loves to be involved. They don't have MANY things to do, but they are working on getting the students involved in and on the campus. They have the "Scorpion's Calling" every fall and the problem is getting students to come out and support. That is where school pride come in. There is not a lot, because I do believe that people are just using this as a "go-to" college and don't see the need to become involved in the various clubs that are still active or even remaining an integral part of the one(s) that they were already involved in to keep it going. The class sizes are small, Most of the instructors are very friendly and helpful. If you need help, all you have to do is say so. I have had no problem getting answers to any questions I have had. Sometimes they lag on answering the phones, but at this critical time in the game, it is to be expected. The instructors go out of their way to get to know you, and not just that, but to make sure that they know your name! Dr. Yao is an amazing person and is very visual around the campus. He takes the time to introduce himself to you and offers assistance if there is ever a need. Dr. Kuniyuki is also a very friendly face around campus. He will stop and speak to the students that pass him up and it always puts a smile on your face when he says words to encourage you to keep going. Dr. Yao and Dr. Kuniyaki are very pleasant and they want you to succeed. They don't just say it, they show it. The Academic Advising Department gets 5 stars from me a well. I have never met a nicer group of people who TRULY are there to help you succeed! If you are confused on where to attend, if you are concerned about money burning through your pockets, and if you want more than an Associates Degree, I strongly suggest taking a gander at Nevada State College! It is still growing and they are working to make it more like the college campus those that want a "real" college campus experience desire. I attended NSC as part of the transfer program to the Occupational Therapy program at Touro University. The classes I did take there I enjoyed and I felt welcomed by the small school atmosphere. It is easy to quickly get to know the staff and students. I recommend taking classes in person and talking to other students about individual teaching styles to make sure they will fit for you. Myself and several other students have worked there and it has been a nice place to work as well. I think that some of the staff there care more about the students than the staff at larger universities. My only other experience with colleges is with UNR which has other benefits of a flowing campus ect. but NSC is where I think anyone is welcome whether it be a mom returning to work, a high school student looking to get ahead or someone looking to go into a specific career. read more

This campus is ok. I go to night school & I love that even though the parking lot seems to always be full, inside the building is so quiet! Other college campus' that i've been too is so crowded @ times. Although, i'm not sure if it's crowded here during the day. This is my 1st time @ this school & so far, it's ok, I guess. I'd definitely continue to go here as long as I can being that the class I really needed, this time, was open here. Oh! one thing i've noticed is that the buildings for this school are scattered. Driving distance scattered. It's kinda weird. I have 1 class i'm taking right now & it's a good thing (for now anyway) because i'm thinkin' if you have multiple classes @ this school, & your other class is in another building which is down the street OR in another location, kinda sucks to have to look for parking again. I am currently attending Nevada State College right now, and I love the faculty and the classes (ecspecially Lori Fazzino's Sociology 101 class) but they need to seriously work on either hiring smarter people in the financial aid office or a better computer system. Here is my story: In mid August, I hadn't recieved any notice about my financial aid money that was suppose to go toward my $2,000 debt for tuition. I ended up just going to their building and being told that they were missing information needed to recieve the loan money. Why they couldn't have told me this when I applied for enrollment or when I actually enrolled into 4 classes, is beyond me. Isn't that just common sense. Act 2: Late August. I received an email stating that I recieved 2/3rds of my loan money when I was supposed to and only did recieve 1/2. I again went to there offices and their system messed up and they sent me the rest of the money. Awesome. Today...this weekend I reccieved an email that I was 30 days past due on a payment. How could that be when my loan paid for everything, because I can't afford it at the time, hence the loan! I check myNSC and saw that I owed the school $4,085! WHAT! So I finally got ahold of them early today and they said that they refunded my loan! How can they do that without communicating that to me is beyond me! I have attended all my classes, I have As and Bs, and midterms are this week and now all that is on my mind is the fact that I have to pay the school money that I do not have! I plan in going into their office in about 2 hours. Hopefully it goes well. I am beyond pissed off! All these prolems make me wish I have spent triple the amount of money just to go to UNLV! read more

I like the school itself. The campus is nice and I have had awesome professors. However, the financial aid office is a complete disaster. I have been given the run around for a year. The staff doesn't communicate with one another, so when you call in you will receive different information every time. Once you feel like you have submitted every financial document that you have; they manage to find some more to ask for. Once I finally submitted all of my documents one of them told me that I should be receiving award letter by the end of the week and if not, give them a call. Of course, the letter never came. When I called back, a different staff member, told me that I needed to submit a SAP form for my aid to be considered. I submitted the form yesterday and received an email today saying that my appeal was being sent back to me because my probation was revoked so I need to earn it back on my own. If that's what I need to do, fine. But it would have been nice to know that a year ago before I went through all of the extra stress. read more

I just started here and the Administration is a MESS. I have never gone to a school that is so disorganized in all of my academic career. I didn't even get my financial aid processed until the week before classes started. Hell, I'm a few days into the semester and they STILL haven't evaluated my transcripts from my old school even though they have had them for MONTHS. Don't even get me started on financial aid reimbursements. They are currently withholding over $2,000 worth of loans that I am entitled to because they can't figure out their damn system. Money that I NEED to buy books and school supplies that I can't now even though I'm almost a week into classes! I'm not going to end up falling behind before the semester even really gets going because of these clowns in administration. Not to mention if you try to call their Financial Aid office, NO ONE EVER ANSWERS. They don't even give you the courtesy of returning phone calls. If I had to do it all over again I would have just gone to CSN to take my prerequisite nursing courses or UNLV to complete the program. Students beware! The classes themselves are great. However the staff at NSC in the financial aid and registrar's office are completely incompetent. Each time you call you will get a different to your question. Forget having a manager call you back because that will never happen. Recommend emailing all questions but don't hold your breath waiting for a response because it will take forever. read more

I absolutely loved my experience at NSC. The professors were amazing. The classes were awesome. This has a small school feeling, but it is accredited and will let you earn a degree that really means something. The new Liberal Arts building is really nice, and the classes which I took were always perfect. Don't hesitate to go and meet with a counselor if you are interested. After one semester I was hooked.
