My son has been attending MLC since TK and we just started 7th grade. I specifically sought out a…read moredual language school for a number of reasons. What I found was SO much more. This school also strongly focuses on community, social emotional learning, justice, equality & equity. Students are not only taught to "learn", but also to THINK. There really is a difference. I love that the majority of their education is hands on & project based...not text books, lectures & paperwork all day everyday. I feel like it's so much more impactful. I feel like my son has retained so much more knowledge from this format. I also LOVE that the school is so small. I feel like my child has gotten so much more individualized support & help from everyone (aides all the way to the principal) than he would at a larger school. If you're the kind of parent that only cares about HIGH academic rigor bookwork, busy work, graded papers & test scores...then no, maybe this isn't the school for you. Pro tip: dual language students DO tend to have lower test scores in Elementary School, but catch up by Middle School. That's the whole reason it's a TK-8 school. They're learning in two languages while most only have to worry about one. Is this school perfect? Duh, of course not. Nothing is. However, they are pretty spectacular. :)

I am sharing my experience as a parent at MLC so other families can make informed decisions. My…read morechild began experiencing significant behavioral difficulties at school. I requested additional support, including a 504 review, an initial IEP evaluation, a Functional Behavior Assessment and school-based counseling. I did not receive the level of follow-through I expected regarding these requests. Actually, the school did nothing to support him. His behaviors were getting worse at this school, and it was because of the lack of support from staff. I also personally observed the classroom environment. At times, students were out of their assigned areas, leaving the classroom, running, jumping on furniture, and staff were using walkie-talkies to request assistance and resets. I share this observation only to provide context for the environment in which my child was experiencing difficulties. One of my biggest concerns involved my child's removal from Woodcraft Rangers, the after-school program. Before this incident, he had been doing well in the program and responding positively to behavior charts and rewards. After a difficult school day, he was suspended from the after-school program without a clearly defined end date. This created a significant childcare and work hardship for our family because I work during those hours. What shocked me most was that my son was being removed from the only program He was doing well in. When I raised my concerns with the student he was absolute no use then I took my concerns to the Board of Directors after reaching out to the principal with no response. I communicated my concerns with the principal; the executive director; and student service director. From my perspective, the support I was seeking did not result in meaningful behavioral or special education assistance, while the most significant action involving my child was his removal from after-school care. Ultimately, the lack of support and everything that I had experienced with the staff and their lack of care or support was the reason I pulled my 3 kids from this school. The executive director did mention that they were "refining" how they dealt with the afterschool program. I hope that means that students are not being suspended from the afterschool program because of what happens during the school day. And I knew a lot of families that this was happening to as well. I am still fighting with the board of directors to ensure this does not happen to another family including being in regular communication with the district for their violations.

My daughter, an alumni, and now my graduate, have both been blessed by the supportive and caring environment here.
