But the moment I stepped in, everyone was extremely welcoming, respectful, and supportive. It completely put me at ease right away. I've always been into the gym and running, but I have to say... I truly fell in love with jiu-jitsu here. As a beginner, I really appreciate how my training partners and coaches take the time to guide me, explain things clearly, and make sure I understand always in a way that feels encouraging and uplifting. You can tell there's a strong sense of community and care in this gym, and it makes such a difference. If you're thinking about joining and you're new, I highly recommend North Park Jiu Jitsu. Its a super friendly, chill training environment, where everyone is there to learn. Coach Mike was very welcoming when I arrived for no-gi and gi classes. There are classes where you drill specific moves, then have a chance to apply them in a safe, live setting. Then there are classes that take a more eco approach, with situation specifics, tasks, live problem solving with questions from practitioners and direct, tailored feedback from the coach. If you're new and looking to get into the art, a hobbyist looking for a more chill vibe, or a competitor wanting to test yourself and get out on the comp mats later, this is the place for you.

For context, I had taken a few years off from training after my previous Muay Thai instructor had passed away in a tragic accident. I had trained under him for several years before that happened, and so for me, for several years, I never truly felt that "click into place" feeling with any other KB or Muay Thai instructor. As soon as I joined this gym, I Immediately felt like family. This gym has become my saving grace, my family and my new home. Almost immediately, with Manolo specifically, I had that "click into place" feeling after taking his class. Im a little shy, but he made me feel welcome with his big personality and his even bigger sense of humor. Laughter brings out the best in people, and Manolo, makes everyone laugh. You can tell by the way he coaches, that he coaches through experience: both very technical and pragmatic. You can also tell that he is amazing at what he does, by looking at the champions he has brought from the ground up. In my experience, he reads the room really well, and coaches/pushes each of us accordingly, and that's why anyone with any level of experience leaves his class feeling great. outside of coaching, Manolo was one of the few people to really be there when I was at rock bottom. He helped me to believe in myself again and to get back up. There are several champions and very high level athletes that come in and out of there on the daily, but everyone comes in humble and with no ounce of ego whatsoever. Everyone has always maintained the idea that "iron sharpens iron", and so when you come here, you will see everyone helping everyone get better in BJJ/wrestling/boxing/Muay Thai/strength and conditioning. I can't emphasize this enough, when you join this gym, you aren't just a member, you become family. you feel that with all of the members and ALL of the coaches here. I am forever grateful and deeply loyal to this family now. Once a freak, always a freak.

I was grateful to see him corner my son at MDL. My kids love him, wife and I too! You can tell he really cares about his peeps. Get to know him and you'll be glad you made a new friend. Coach Josh is an extremely knowledgeable boxing coach and exceedingly patient. My kids' striking has improved so much since training with him. Thanks for letting my boys train with you and your students. Coach Nate is a seasoned wrestler and wrestling coach. He does a great job of clearly communicating and demonstrating techniques and the purpose/intent behind each skill. Coach Monsa is great at supporting and encouraging folks new to Judo. I would not want to be hip-tossed by him, but he's too nice of a guy to do that to me lol Coach Boogey is obviously passionate about jujitsu and coaching his members - and it shows. Coach Chris, Coach Jacob, and Coach Jasmine are super friendly and kind to all the kids. My kids also love taking Strength and Conditioning with Coach Matt and the other coach (I can't remember her name right now for some reason and apologize for the early-onset dementia).

Aikido is a martial art and as such has a martial approach in it's philosophy, but one of the tenets is to seek ways to avoid conflict. This dojo and the instructors associated with it represent that philosophy as passed down from our principal instructors.

The form of aikido taught and practiced here is traditional as well, which to me means "small circles" and economy of motion - capturing the essence of the art. The idea that the dojo "promotes violence outside the dojo" is completely contrary to what I have observed about the philosophical approach taken by the dojo. I have studied Daito-Ryu ju jutsu and Iaido, which are much more combat-related, as well as modern combat arts. The aikido taught at SD Aikikai is not combat-oriented, although it can be used defensively. I never felt pressured to go to the dojo to train. Any pressure to train is self-imposed. The reviewer who complained about the dojo needs to examine their own motivations and sense of self. Blaming others for one's own psychological shortcomings is neither constructive nor helpful. As for the complaint that the dojo will "accept anyone who gives them money," I am not clear on why an aikido dojo would want to exclude anyone unless they have bad motivations for training. The point of aikido is to involve people - this is not a military arts school that operates in an exclusionary way. There are no contracts or special obligations imposed. I have to wonder at the motivation of the reviewer who attacked the Aikikai with untrue, unwarranted, and illogical complaints. Do they run a competing dojo? Have they ever trained at the SD Aikikai? Do they understand anything about the martial arts - and aikido in particular?
