This gym is absolutely wonderful. -There is a wealth of…read moreknowledge and experience from the coaches and trainers. They're all happy to see their students grow and be their best selves. -The place is very clean and full of professional and mature individuals who *mostly* take responsibility to clean to - which is truly saying something. - I have never been to a gym to welcoming and friendly. I usually just like to go in, do my thing, and get out. There are strong bonds formed here strengthened with every class we suffer through. Everyone has different goals and reasons for being there but we all support each others journey. Very much an "each one teach one" vibe. - also the Jocko supplements are actually really good. I hope to see more of that. The only thing I wish they had was a regular clock in the weight room and cross-fit room. I leave my watch at home when at the gym and I feel like I have to look at my phone every 5 min not wanting to miss class. Update: coming up in 2 years training with this gym. Even with a fire that took it down and a second location opened up within just a few months the management is still quite professional and the coaches are awesome. Looking forward to the old building opening back up.

Ok, this review is about my experience 15 years ago. I was an undergrad at UCSD, and I tried kendo…read morethrough the recreation department on campus. I went to every Saturday practice for 6 months until I graduated and moved to Los Angeles County. As far as I know, if you take the class through the UCSD Rec Department, you only attend the Saturday practice, so if you want to attend the other practice sessions during the week, you'll have to go through a different avenue. This is a very very large dojo, and there are enough people to fill a basketball gym. The sensei 15 years ago was Yamamoto-sensei, and from what I can tell in the recent pictures, the people who used to be the TAs under Yamamoto-sensei are now the senseis. Practicing kendo is like leveling in a role-playing game--you have to earn your gear slowly one piece at a time. All the beginners were in shorts and t-shirt, and I was not even allowed to wear uniform until about 4 months into it. This means that you can invest into kendo slowly, and should you decide that kendo is not your thing afterall, you're not stuck with a big pile of equipment that you'll have to unload on eBay. On the other hand, by the time you have earned your full set of armor through hard work and sweat, you're probably going to stick with it. There is a lot of rituals and traditions that this dojo also teach, and these practices are just as important as the more active part of kendo. This dojo has a collegiate atmosphere, and every higher ranked person is willing and happy to teach you something. One thing, I remember Sensei Susan Zau being very kind but slightly scary, just slightly. :-) Keep in mind that they work you very hard at this dojo. You will be very sore for a few weeks, but the only way to get better at kendo is to do kendo. As it happens, 15 years later, I have now restarted practicing kendo in North Carolina, and the sensei here said I have pretty good form as a beginner. It goes to show how well the senseis in San Diego taught me. If I still lived in the San Diego area, I would have probably continued at this dojo and nowhere else, despite Sensei Zau being slightly scary.

This is the best kendo dojo in the San Diego area! They have about 10 sensei (teachers). Classes are good but they nickel and dime every way they can. One day we forgot to pack the GB performance shirt they need to wear under the Gi but still had a black Nike shirt on underneath, and was told he can't step onto mat unless he had the GB shirt, so was forced to buy one. Then baseball season started and we had to pause the membership. Told we can't do it at location but needed to email. They will give you a three month pause but charge $25 each month, any additional months after that need to be "approved" or at least when I told them we needed to pause for another month the email response I got said "request approved". Lastly, our son decided he didn't want to go back as he wanted to do other things during the summer and so we asked to cancel. Apparently you need to give a 60 day notice of cancellation and will be charged in full for those two months, and membership pause also doesn't count towards 60-day notice policy. Talk about highway robbery. This is a gym membership not cancelling a lease. All these fees and gotchas are outlined in the contract but not fully explained when we signed up. So make sure you ask questions about the contract before jumping in and plan accordingly if you want to cancel.
