I've been doing BJJ for over 28 years and the training environment at Grappling Dynamics is a welcome change. The atmosphere is relaxed and most of the guys are super chill, humble and cool. Finally! Mr. Brandon has his own place! Our oldest Son trained with Mr. Brandon, Mr. Seymour and Mr. Mike at "the other place". Over the last year we have tried out a few places closer to home and nothing came close. Our oldest is thrilled to be back on the mats and training again. Our youngest son has also started training after learning that this is Mr. Brandon's place. The youth program is amazing, the amount of attention the kids get on the mats is awesome (3 adults and a few of the older students helping as well). The length of the training session is perfectly matched with their age and keeps the boys engaged the whole time, no seemingly endless explanation of the techniques here. My wife took a self-defense class there so review below is from her: Brandon and his staff hosted a great self-defense class for a group of 15-20 women. It's not the typical self- defense class that you may think of ("if he grabs your arm then you do this" (while re-enacting in slow motion)). He teaches you concepts and breaks down the idea behind defending yourself. And you practice a lot- in a good way where you experience being pulled/ pushed so you know how it would feel and how you should respond. I definitely feel more confident and top rules in self-defense: awareness and avoidance. Don't put yourself in situations where you need to defend yourself. It was my first time trying jiujitsu and I had an awesome time learning some basics today. I've always been an athletic person and have been wanting to try out martial arts for a while. Brandon, Seymour, and Mike were all fantastic trainers, who were very professional in teaching basic (and not-so-basic) techniques in a very user-friendly way. I feel like I learned a lot even in the 90 minutes I was there, and I now have a great appreciation for the physical and mental demands of the sport. It was an open gym format when I went, and all of the members were friendly and helpful in giving me new tips and strategies during each grapple. The free flowing format was nice in that I also got to take a step back and observe more experienced technicians do their thing. Brandon, the owner of this gym, is hands-down the best Jiu-Jitsu instructor I've seen. My son first took class with him at Clark Gracie, but we left there when Brandon left - he MADE the studio. After having my son in another academy for over a year I switched him over to Grappling Dynamics a couple of weeks ago. We couldn't be happier! The coach to student ratio is tremendous which means less sitting around and waiting your turn and more real training, learning and having fun. I was able to take a few days of leave and found my way to Grappling Dynamics' open mat. Everyone was incredibly polite and wouldn't hesitate to spar with a guest. True to their name, both judo and wrestling were integrated into stand up, with seemless transitioning to ground work. No one was excessively stiff, good flow and could take a fall no problem. My 2 kids have been training jiu-jitsu, kids wrestling and judo under Coach Brandon for many years (since they were about 5). We have trained at other academy's away from Brandon which were very negative experiences so we are excited to see the new location opening up. Brandon is great with the kids. He understands how to motivate the kids to learn while making it fun for them as well as competitive. It is always very structured and follows a plan that typically includes the entire week of training goals. We have competed in jiu-jitsu and judo tournaments with Brandon and have done very well. He is the best coach we have been under. One of my sons was in a situation where he was physically bullied and his training protected him while de-escalating the situation immediately (judo hip throw to side control and americana submission). I just moved to San Diego from DC where I picked up BJJ, and I knew coming to here I would have many choices on where to train. I was introduced to Grappling Dynamics a couple of months before they opened. After learning their mission statement and training style, I instantly jumped on the train to something very different. Here I am 4 months later and loving every minute! My schedule is extremely hectic but with the variety of classes (Morning, afternoon, evening and weekend open mats) I can always get my training in. They have ample parking which is a huge plus. The academy is kept up nicely, IT HAS A SHOWER, which is so nice when I need to go from training to work or anywhere else! They also offer a military discount for those who serve as well!
