I was in constant contact with staff, inquiring about the status, to which they informed me there would be no issues to speak of and not to worry... they guaranteed the item I had ordered would be available. Low and behold, the item I pre-ordered was popular... the staff knew this. Shortly prior to the release date, I found it odd to find the now 'SOLD OUT' pre-order listed at double the price on their website. When I inquired, they informed me that the item would be delayed by a month but not to worry, they were working with the distributor, to make sure I would receive what I had ordered. A month later, I received a statement from staff that my item was now cancelled. They weren't exactly apologetic and seemed to think I would simply tolerate their barrage of lies and having wasted so much of my time. It was through fellow collectors that I discovered the unfortunate fact that when ToysOnFire discovers that an item is highly sought after, they will simply cancel your pre-order and inflate the price of the item in-store... this is what happened with my order. Ridiculous and shady business practices. As such, I have been advising every collector I know to AVOID Toys On Fire stores, both in-person and online. Why continue supporting local shops, when they conduct business this way? Almost every product Toys On Fire offers can be found via online retailers like Amazon & Toys R Us with free shipping and at less-inflated prices. Toys On Fire engages in price-scalping and as all collector's know, the only way to battle price-scalping is to cease supporting it altogether. Take my advice and shop around... there are far more options out there than Toys On Fire, from companies that won't make false guarantees or waste months of your time.

I think I have a serious toy store radar. Anytime I'm out on some other errand, I end up spying a…read moretoy store in the distance, and chances are, if Noah K is with me, we're going to stop. No, he's not still into action figures or anything like that, but he loves boardgames, and let's face it - as a former nanny, I still love looking at toys. While on our way to get groceries on Sunday we spotted this toy store and had to check it out. Kaitlyn C is right on the money saying she was blown away when she walked in. This place is somewhere in between Mrs. Tiggy Winkles and Toys R Us. It's not as massive as Toys R Us, but has a great selection. While it's not as trendy as Mrs. Tiggy Winkles (particularly their Lost Marbles section), it's still fantastic. I was really impressed with the variety of things we saw there, as well as the cleanliness and organization of the store. We were also asked a few times if we needed help but friendly, young employees. Their boardgame selection isn't huge, but they do have a few of the Settlers of Catan expansion packs, as well as some other popular games like Pandemic, Scrabble, Monopoloy and quite a few other fun games. The selection is certainly geared toward younger kids with lots of 3 and up games. They have a HUGE selection of puzzles as well. Where I thought this place was simply fantastic was the amount of educational games they have. There's a massive wall of Science and Discovery activities and an amazing selection of children's books. They also have a pretty fantastic dress up selection, some fun old school games. I'm absolutely coming here next time I get the wee ones in my life a present. If you have kids, I would definitely recommend checking this place out if you've got a birthday party to go to, or want to pick them up a special gift. Your kids will LOVE it! The prices seemed very fair and on par with Toys R Us.

The place seemed a lot bigger than it did when it was used as a Spirit Halloween store and the space was filled with almost every kind of toy you can imagine. They had everything from scooters to LEGO to baby dolls. While it isn't as big as Toys R Us and does not offer quite the same amount or selection of merchandise (especially licensed items), it was just as well, if not more organized and still had quite a nice selection. My sister and I really enjoyed the book section. They had books for all ages of kids and they had quite a few the two of us remembered from our childhood. All in all, it's a really neat place to visit, especially if you have kids or even if you're a kid at heart.

They have everything retro games and even some current/next gen stuff but the focus is clearly retro. In addition, there are plush/plastic toys and even Lego. The owner is very helpful and the atmosphere in general is pleasant. Stock: Most popular titles for all game systems; they also have common underrated games. If you're looking for a particular gaming system, they will have that too. Price: For a game player,? If you want to play Mega Man 2, you will find it here for a fair price and be happy with your purchase. Price: For a collector? Well, you will enjoy your visit for sure but this is not a thrift store; that doesn't mean you won't find a good deal though. Overall a welcome store to the Ottawa area. There are simply not enough stores that showcase retro-games so well. So check it out if you're visiting Ottawa or just enjoy retro-gaming.

What can I say about GameZetera other than the fact I still don't think I pronounce their name…read morecorrectly when I say it... I've gone there a handful of times, done a couple trade-ins and bought a few things. Simply put, they have a really nice selection of retro games, that's for sure. No matter what game you are looking for chances are they have it in stock. The only down side is their prices rival what you find on eBay so don't expect to be able to acquire a large number of cheap games for your own collection here. Personally, I think they would move a lot more product if they dropped the prices of retro games by about 20%. But I don't really think that's what they want to do as it seems the owners treat the place like their own personal retro game collection where they're more interested in having and holding all these games rather than selling them. It also seems that they are gradually moving move away from retro games and into trading card, sports memorabilia and card games like Magic and Pokemon. Most games start at about $20 for all the retro systems (NES, SNES, N64..etc.) and go up quickly from there. It's not uncommon to see a title you can pick up on eBay for a flat $20 with shipping being sold at GameZetera for $30 + 13% tax. There are only a few titles for less but usually it's because the cartridge is trashed with a ripped label or permanent marker scribbled on it. Either that or it's a widely unpopular title that no one wants or has even heard of. Beyond retro games and consoles they also have trading cards, some sports memorabilia, various geeky knickknacks like wallets, hats and backpacks. They also have some random game guides/books, a few older PC games and other random game related items. Sadly, it's clear though that they don't take any pride in their inventory. While they did TRY to organize the titles at some point often when going in you'll find 'B' titles scattered in with the 'R' titles and so on. They've also got several giant bins of mis-mashed stuff just tossed in. There's game cases, games, cables, toys..etc. All totally unorganized and caked with dirt. Speaking of dirt - I'm convinced they don't clean the games that come in beyond a token blowing in the cartridge. Every cartridge game I have bought there I've have to clean myself at home with alcohol and Q-Tips before it would even work as the pins are dark and caked with grime. As well, when you get a receipt from them all games are listed simply as "game" with an arbitrary price beside it. No inventory number, description or anything. Honestly it's 1 step above a hand scribbled note saying "you buyed stuffz for $22.60 - come again". They're fairly responsive on Facebook though there's been times it's taken them a couple days to answer a simple question about their stock. Really, it would be nice if they had a live inventory of their games on their website - maybe even allowed online orders that you could pickup. But you can tell they just don't care enough to do this. But when you're the only "game" in town for a place that's dedicated to retro video games I suppose you can get away with that sort of thing. Bottom line, It's worth just popping in if you're in the area as just looking at everything they have is an experience in of itself. A trip down memory lane as it were to which there is no admission fee. If you're looking for something specific, chances are they will have it but expect to pay top dollar for it.

When we walked in at around 6:30pm on a weeknight, the entire store was deserted but there was a tournament of some sort going on. Te same thing happened the last time we came. I'm all about having tournaments, but these instances majorly hindered the business. The first time we went in there was literally no staff at the counter. Even after waiting, no one ever came and no one asked us if we needed help. The second time we came, there was someone behind the counter, but when we asked for help he said "I can't help you, I don't work here," in an incredibly rude tone. I couldn't believe this! We then wandered around looking for the board game we were on the hunt for, and still, no one seemed to be available to help us. On our way out the door, someone told us to "have a good night." When we asked him if he actually worked there, he said yes and asked if he could help us. He told is he had the game we were looking for, but not the version we wanted because "no one carries it anymore." (Note: we found it down the street at Mastermind Toys - ha!) Unless you enjoy the tournaments they host here, I would avoid this place. That is, unless you check their schedule and make sure not to go during one of their events.
