Soft, fluffy, melt in your mouth delicious. If you want donut holes, come early because they sell out quick. It's been at least 8 years since I had Nelson's and they still meet expectations. They open at 5 am. There is a drive thru and some parking in the front and the back or you can also park next door. I went to McNeese and lived around the corner from this spot. I've lived in Lake Charles for 1 yr now & soon after moving, a neighbor told me Nelson's has the best donuts around. I gave 'em a shot & I swear I heard angels singing, the moment I bit into that 1st glazed donut !!!!! I've never tasted such a delicious donut in my life. They melt in your mouth, and they taste like no donut I've ever tasted. I wish I could properly describe the heavenly taste of Nelson's donuts. Please just take my word for it, they're the best donut you'll ever eat. I've sampled a whole lotta' donuts, across several cities/states for nearly 40 years, and I can easily say Nelson's has the best donuts ever ! My youngest daughter and I make a special trip to Nelson's, a couple of times each week during the summer, and 1-2 x's a month during the school year. She looks forward to it, & everyone there treats us like family. Hearing the news that Nelson caught on fire, recently, actually made me feel emotional. Nelson's is an institution in Lake Charles & none of the donut shops can replace them. I hope Mr Nelson himself knows how desperate the community is to see them back in action. read more

Go at 5 am to get a doz hot donuts for your family. Plan on only bringing half home as you'll eat half of them yourself on your short drive. They go down soooo good. I prefer the regular glazed donuts. I live in New England and come home periodically to visit Nelson's donuts. Since I'm already in Lake Charles for donuts I might as well go spend time with family too. :) read more

Good donuts. 2-stars because every time I go they seem to have an issue/attitude, specifically targeted towards me. I'm very polite to these people, sad. Had Nelsons while I was in town for work. Donuts aren't bad, just wasn't what I look for in a donut. They were a bit more dense than I was used to. Decent flavor, but not as light and airy like I typically like. Definitely check them out if you like a more dense donut. They must be doing something the locals like since they've been open for a long time and are pretty busy in the mornings. read more

Nelson's has been a mainstay in Lake Charles ever since I can remember my family has been eating their donuts for well over 40 years. There are two donut shops in Lake Charles as far as I'm concern those of you who are donut fanatic know the other one is located on Highway14. I've never eaten them side by side so it is impossible to say one is better than the other but a fresh hot glazed Nelson donut is a pleasure you really want to experience. OK...For a doughnut man like myself...I was very impressed...I found this place on Yelp & had to go check it out for myself...got there around 9 am and the classics (the only kind of doughnuts anyone should eat) were warm and fluffy...made for a great experience...kind of a hole-in-the-wall place which makes it even better...Loved It!!! read more

Not the same Nelsons I remember growing up! Donuts are hardly ever hot anymore. The dough isn't the same consistency, the service is slow and not always that friendly. My husband grew up in Sulphur and didn't even know about the glory that is Nelson's. These are some magical delicious fluffy crispy doughnuts. The doughnut holes are as yummy as the doughnuts from which they came just teeny!! Prices are great and service is always nice...even at 6am. Get there early for a glazed and a chocolate milk and get on with your day...its gonna be great!! read more

Friendly service. We got a mixed dozen bc we had never been to Nelsons donuts and we wanted to taste a lil bit of everything. The best one that we agreed on was the apple filled; its was downright yummy! The original glazed was the 2nd runner up! The other cream filled ones were not that great. I had actually removed a little less than half because all I was eating was the raspberry filling without donuts bread; simply too much cream filling. When we return we will be sure to get the Apple filled an original glazed! read more

Nelson's is easily my favorite donut shop anywhere. They are always hot and perfectly glazed. I remember when they first carried kolaches and they would use the donut dough around the meat. I had not seen that anywhere prior and it instantly became my favorite kolache. A friend of mine drove all the way from Houston recently and brought back Nelson's donuts and kolaches back to Houston for us. The donuts were as good as always, but something was different about the kolaches. They changed the bread recipe!!! I was distraught after eating a few. For anyone that has had a Darrell's sandwich knows you don't mess with the bread. Nelson's kolaches have been destroyed. What once was a unique and amazing treat has become a bottom of the barrel product. I wish Nelson's will bring back the old kolaches. Until then I will just have to go back to buying donuts. :( read more

I grew up eating these donuts, and although I've eaten donuts all over the US and now live on the East Coast, I still think Nelson's has the best donuts anywhere. The strawberry filled and chocolate glazed ones are my favorites. Every time I bring my sons to visit the family we still have in LC, we go to Nelson's at least once. Fantastic! read more

We were at the Casino Resort and I pretty much crave donuts every second of my breathing life. I saw the great reviews of this place and decided to see what all the fuss was about. One word: GLAZED. One bite into that hot and crispy glazed donut and I felt like a seal that has been lost for 13 years that finally found his way home. Next time, and trust me there will be a next time, I will get 2 dozen of those bad boys. Kolaches were not so amazing. Cake donuts were great. There is no seating area inside it's kind of like a drive through. All in all, If you are in the area, do ten push ups and drive to Nelson's Donuts and see why America is so beautiful. read more
