Red flags everywhere.
We went to see Dr. Gorme (pronounced gormay) after a referral from our regular dentist for a wisdom tooth removal. Dr. Gorme used to be at Methodist, but now has a clinic in Houston, one in Pearland, and a third in Baytown.
We arrived at Dr. Gorme's office and were asked to wait quite a while, then were rushed in to do some x-rays (even though the dentist had taken some just a few days before - Red flag #1). We were then spit back out into the waiting room for another long pause.
Finally brought to a treatment room (where - no big deal there was no room for another person to sit, so I had to stand while the nurse spoke to the hubs) and were introduced to Dr. Gorme who decided to argue with my husband about which wisdom teeth to pull (calling the referring dentist lazy) - Red Flag number 2. THEN!! (here's where it gets good - buckle up.
The dentist, and Dr. Gorme's staff (I called to confirm the details of the procedure) had previously told us that the process that day would be to do a light sedation, yank some teeth and send us home. On the spot Dr. Gorme decides to say that my husband will have to undergo general anesthesia because Dr. Gorme may have to remove some of his jaw bone -Red Flag #3 [at this point Dr. Gorme had also asked if my husband had taken a full week off of work to recuperate because it would take about a week to a week and a half to get over the surgery - way different than the 2-3 day recoup time others had told us about) . We asked for a minute to discuss privately (this obviously took longer than 60 seconds) but were interrupted multiple times by his staff pressuring us to go through with the surgery. On the last interruption the nurse/PA/?? said that if we needed more time to decide we'd have to reschedule. I'm not even kidding - we were "discussing" for under 6 minutes total, including interruptions...so we decided that there was no way we were going to let this quack operate.
We asked for a copy of the new x-ray to show a second surgeon and paid .
Update: The second surgeon we saw suggested exactly what he dentist had predicted -light sedation and some pulling (confirming that Dr. Gorme was very mistaken) AND Dr. Gorme's office never sent a bill to our insurance - so we are currently fighting that.
If you care about your family's safety and don't 100% know what you should be expecting - please go see someone else. I'd hate to know that he took advantage of someone. We were lucky in that we were familiar with what the treatment should be and were able to recognize that what he was planning to do was odd. I hate to know how this would have turned out if we'd stuck with Gorme. read more
