1/4 rotisserie chicken, yellow rice and beans
    Valerie R.

We started a lunch club at work with a few coworkers...mission: to have some fun and try new restaurants. I have been craving Spanish food for the longest time!! So I was pleased when we had our first lunch at Negrita's today. A little hole in the wall place in New Britain, you can barely see the restaurant name past the huge tree in front of the restaurant. Waking inside, you get the strong feeling that the space used to be occupied by a Subway...same booths and layout. Seating is limited and booths only hold two people so if you're with a group, prepare to split up or take your food elsewhere to eat. Nothing is labeled and there are no menus, just a menu board up on the wall. I was not very adventurous on my first trip, but ordered yellow rice and beans with 1/4 rotisserie chicken. I also ordered one of those fried mashed potato balls with meat inside. No idea what it's called but I've always loved them. Another coworker also ordered the chicken, one got spare ribs, and one just got rice, beans and plantains. I really wish I had gotten some plantains!!!! My food was reasonable at $8.95 for the meal, the mashed potato ball and a bottle of water. I definitely have enough leftover for another meal. The chicken was moist inside but the skin was crispy. Perfect! The yellow rice and beans were fabulous. It's a perfect spot for a quick lunch because you don't have to wait long. I will definitely be back to try some of the other meats and the bacalaitos...curious to see how they compare to my Italian grandmother's codfish fritters that she makes every Christmas!!

This place is a gem!!! The staff is super polite, pricing is amazing and the food is always fresh and flavorful. The owner is Argentinian and the chef is Dominican. We drive 20mins just to get it!

H was inclined to try Negrita's after a recommendation from his coworker. We made the trek from WeHa and although we're not from the area, it wasn't a bad drive. There's only off-street parking. I can see how it would be difficult to navigate during high traffic or lunch time hours. Walking in, it's really right. There are tables on either side should you decide to eat-in. There were two women working the counter when we came in. Neither acknowledged me, but immediately focused on H- he speaks Spanish. Didn't think much of it until a Jamaican man (he said he was Jamaican) came in asking specially for an ox tail dish the store only makes on Wednesdays. The women had trouble understanding the Jamaican man (although he spoke English well and without an accent)... H ended up translating on each side. I guess my point is that it helps if you know Spanish. Anyway... Another Yelper nailed it when he mentioned that the food is not made to order. There is glass case which holds commonly prized fried foods like (excuse my lack of spelling...) alcapurria, papas de rellena, chicharrons, and platanos amongst many other items. On the opposite side (same rectangular area), there are food encased a buffet-like container which houses the ready made dishes. H commented on the variety of dishes and was amazed they had such a selection (we went in at 7:15 and they close at 8). We ended up with one extremely full bag and paid less than $20 including tip. Seriously. SOOO cost effective. We took the food to-go and the meal was easily heated up in a microwave (the chicharrons stayed crispy- that's a plus). The pernil (roasted pig) was delicious and super flavorful. The chicken and beef were both absolutely tender and well-seasoned. Apparently we had rabbit and I could've cared less (even if I had known it was rabbit beforehand). The empanadillas, papas de rellena, alcapurria and blood sausage were meh. We've had better. As a Puerto Rican (H) and a non-Hispanic (me), each party found the meats were really good and considered the fried foods to be sub-par. Well definitely come back during normal business hours (probably late morning) in order to get the best portion and freshest food possible.

The pastelito tasted old and like the oil it was cooked in. The beans were watery and tasteless. Do not recommend.

We shared the seafood paella; they make it to order so i was able to ask for no octopus and mussels, and have more shrimp and fish. It was outstanding and so were our cocktails. This is a new favorite restaurant for me. A note of warning: this is an expensive restaurant... the bill for 2 of us was $200, but that is with four $15 cocktails. My apologies... i was too distracted to remember to take photos, but I do plan to return and will do better next time.

Boqueria in West Hartford is an absolute gem. My wife and I came in ready to explore tapas, and…read moreevery single dish we tried was seriously delicious. The flavors were bold, fresh, and perfectly balanced, but the standout for me was the steak and the chorizo toast, both were incredible and honestly worth the visit all on their own. What really made the experience next-level, though, was the service. The staff was attentive, friendly, and made us feel taken care of from start to finish. Even when there was a slight delay, the manager stepped in immediately and made sure everything stayed smooth, professional, and high-quality. That kind of leadership and care makes a huge difference. Boqueria isn't just a "special occasion" place, it's the kind of restaurant you come back to because you want to try something new, share great food, and leave happy. We'll absolutely be returning, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for an amazing tapas experience in West Hartford.

We are very blessed . . …read more That our area of Southeastern Connecticut has such a large Puerto Rican population - - or we may have never tasted the wonderful food that this restaurant offers. One of the best, if not THE VERY BEST, restaurants in the local area. My only concerns: 1) I didn't see a bathroom, but I didn't need one ‍; 2) we could have used a knife for the pork stick, but we should have asked. The staff is extremely helpful. Wonderful designs, with lots of inspiration. Now for the food: - Chicken Steam Plate: Chicken leg, rice & beans, fried plantain pieces. Chicken super moist, rice was outstanding, & plantains were very tasty. - Beef Stew: very good, similar to Filipino Beef Mechado. - Pork Stick: great tasting pork - - for me, I would have liked a bit more "fatty" on my stick, but it was really meaty!!! - Beans were nicely done. - Smashed Plantains were served with 1000 Island dressing: probably just as good without the dressing. - Ground Beef Empanada: good, a bit of vegetables would have put it over the top (potatoes, onions, carrots, peas) - - but that's there style. - Chicken Empanada: ok, a bit salty for us. Enjoy!!!!!

The only thing is that this spot is a bit pricer than other Hispanic restaurants. Therefore I don't make it in often. But when I do come, I'm never disappointed.
