The NC General Store (Specialty Shop) is a must visit! It takes you back in time with many hard to get or locally made items. I brought and have tried Whistle Stop Fried Chicken batter and will go back when it runs out. The have lots of canned and bottle specialties such as NC General Store brand Apple Butter and Traffic Jam. These products are delicious. There are also a lot of art images. Larry on of the owners said his Pa, Rusty Forest was an artist--his art is proudly displayed and for sale. I brought to images and mats. It is such a quaint store. Well organized and old fashioned. Loved this cute shop that I walked by randomly. It says it's a general store from the outside so I was expecting to find a small scale CVS/grocery store with everyday items available for purchase. However, it truly lived up to the actual business name with having loads of specialty items from other local small businesses. If you're looking to help small businesses and make a great dinner or have yummy snacks, this is your place. You'll find pasta, seasonings, pickled favorites, drink mixers...you name it. Upon exploring further, I also saw an art section in the rear where either the owner or someone he may hire draws and paints on an easel. Pretty random and cool. Also, you'll find many different sauces and spices like jerk seasoning or barbeque sauce. There is fudge, coffee, special prepared nuts like chocolate cashews! There's also a bulk candy to pick out your own choices from bins. It is a great place full of a lot of things to choose from. It is worth it just to stop in and look around. So this store is pretty cool... but I think I'm really spoiled living close to Southern Season where I have access to a lot of the stuff that's here and more. But if you're in Wake Forest it's worth a stop to browse the shelves for NC-centric goodies, local to the Triangle and otherwise. I absolutely love this place! There are so many different food items (sauces, pancake mixes, syrups, candies, etc) that I could spend hours in here browsing. Although food is not the only item sold in this store. It has the true general store feel to it and diverse selection of unique items good for gifting or personal use. I tend to gravitate towards the various sauces (mustard sauces, hot sauces, BBQ sauces), coffees, made from scratch mixes. Picking up a bag of homemade gingerbread cookie mix and reading the ingredients yields only all natural ingredients (none of those ingredients you don't know how to pronounce). The variety of pancake mixes and syrups also brings me great joy. The associates are also very knowledgeable and friendly. The last time I was here I was flabbergasted by the flavor of coffees and exclaimed allowed that I could not imagine the chocolate marshmallow flavored coffee. I was informed that the flavor was actually one of the best sellers and the associate poured a few beans into his hand and allowed me to enjoy the strong aroma of chocolate and marshmallows. As I moved on to another section he quickly reappeared offering a sample of a chocolate covered coffee bean. This was no ordinary chocolate covered bean either, it was delectable. He showed us one of the beans cut in half to see that the bean actually had little seeds inside of it. Quite fascinating really. I would highly recommend this store to everybody, you are bound to find whatever you are looking for here and will also thoroughly enjoy the process of locating that item. read more
