It was my first time going to the shop few days ago. I was craving for some cheeze doodles and Blue Bunny's coconut ice fruit bar. Was so happy that they have both items. They even have Bon-ton cheeze doodles on sale for 99 cents 4oz. bag. Just perfect. The ice fruit bar was $1.59, which was reasonable. Not a whole lot of selections, but does its purpose. The cashier, maybe he's the owner, was Ethiopian, very friendly. Asked about my race and attempted to impress me with the two Chinese phrases that everyone knew: "Ni Hao Ma?" and "Xie Xie." He was disappointed that I didn't respond back in Chinese. Now come on.... let this poor Chinese run home and satisfy her munchies. The hours according to him are 9-9 everyday.

But it definitely makes you feel like you're stepping into a bit of a war zone. There is an illustrated sign on the front door that says something like, "Do not enter if wearing a mask or hoodie. If you do, you're trespassing." Ok....not a good sign, or a warm welcome. But I try not to pre-judge. So I go inside, and there's a huge bulletproof walled station along the far left where the attendant sits. And then you can do your shopping from the aisles on the far right. They have a little everything: candy, chips, snacks, beverages, and even canned goods! There's also a whole row of non-food items (like household cleaners and things like that, I think, but I didn't go down there and check). I would've bought a few snacks because I was hungry, but I was highly annoyed when the worker (a man who appeared to be Ethiopian or Eritrean or something like that) stepped outside his bulletproof booth, and came down into the store to do something. I was the ONLY person in the store and standing less than 10 feet away from him. He literally looks me dead in my eye and doesn't even smile, say hello, or give me the courtesy of any kind of acknowledgment whatsoever. It was either as if having a customer was an inconvenience to him, or that he didn't want MY business in particular -- I'm not sure which. Whatever it was, I decided then and there that I wasn't going to patronize his establishment. I don't agree with the kind of customer service offered to black and brown people in the "hood." It's always rude, condescending, and with a lack of even basic human decency and decorum extended to patrons. I'm not here for it! I highly discourage anyone from shopping at 77 Market. The proprietor was watching TV and not too helpful but really all you need to do is select what you can find and pay for it through the bulletproof glass. This store used to have a lot more stock (5 years ago) but he seems to have reduced the number of shelves and sells less items, probably due to the recession and the changing nature of the neighborhood. Sort of ramped at main door for wheelchair access, but not a good slope and the 2nd door in is hard to push open; but easy enough to get around inside store as aisles are opened up.

They are open long hours and have made a special effort to be open near holidays. The selection is very broad, including organic & health drinks, frozen foods, dairy, juice and water, canned foods and soups, cookies, ice cream, housewares, cleaning supplies and paper goods, pharmacy, and even a few simple home tools. Best is a shoe repair and dry cleaning service, saving time for busy residents who don't have time to run errands. I hope more people will post a positive review here on Yelp, as management seems to be considering closing the store in view of automat service, which would be much more limited.

I ordered a crepe with pistachio crepe and a couple of fruits. They charge a significant amount for adding fruit, but the strawberries and bananas I got were freshly chopped and about as much in portion as this fairly large crepe could hold. The pistachio creme was a good choice. They offer savory options, which they note can be vegetarian (but this is not a big vegan food outlet). I did peruse the shop and found a beverage to accompany my crepe. They had a small eclectic selection that included some local options, so I hit them up for some injera crisps as well. The role for a shop like this is relatively small in today's business landscape, but they seem to have filled it pretty well.

This is probably my favorite liquor store in the area simply because it is always bright and organized. Prices are comparable to most area stores but i've definitely seen lower ones elsewhere. If the prices were lowered just a tad I would give it 5 stars. Overall I am a fan and will be making this my go-to liquor store. Great selection.
