The Bay Area's most passionate fan base is also the most underrated. With all due respect to the San Francisco Giants, the most passionate and knowledgeable fans are those of the Golden State Warriors.
What? But the Giants are in the Series! What do you mean?
No offense, but you simply cannot compare Bay Area baseball fans to those in New York, Boston, St Louis or Chicago (Cubs not Sox). The average fan in each of these cities can recite by memory the starting line ups of their rival teams along with their pitching rotations. Can the average Giants fan even begin to tell you who plays in the outfield for the Dodgers?
Warrior fans however are relentless. The Golden State Warriors have not sniffed a title since the year of my birth, yet these fans live and breath blue and gold each day. They know the game and understand more than just your run of the mill basketball fans. Sitting in the stands at Oracle you hear whispers of "good foul" when in fact it was a good foul. "Three seconds!" when yes, the opposing team is camped out in the paint for longer than they should. 'We got numbers!!!" on those exciting fast breaks and the groans when one too many passes are attempted and a missed opportunity slips right through their fingers.
Warrior fans are keen to what other teams are doing and keep a close eye on potential free agents. They understand that the NBA roster is a puzzle and it's about making the money work. No, you cannot trade your entire roster for Kevin Durant. They appreciate it when their team works hard even in a loss. They covet seats behind the visitor bench which can be a nightmare for the visiting team.
They respect players from the past and mourned the loss of Franklin Mieuli. Warrior fans fill their building even when the Clippers are in town.
Listening to the roar of the crowd in their arena sends goosebumps and chills throughout my body. The NBA is fortunate to have fans like these. They are among the elite. read more
