My family was throwing a big party for the Old West End Festival, and we needed spirits, pronto. We…read moredidn't have time to go to Joseph's, so we decided to hit the nearby Manhattan Liquor Agency, to which we had never before ventured. Now that I've been, I can say in earnest that it epitomizes the word seedy. It's a much smaller store than Joseph's and the selection is much more limited. Only the real rotgut was accessible to customers. Everything else was behind the counter. I got the sense that security issues had been plaguing the store for some time, given the tense atmosphere and majority of drinkable booze being held behind the counter. The big guy hanging around the store with words to the effect of "Smile if you're carrying a gun" emblazoned upon his t-shirt further contributed to this sketchy vibe. Tired of being stared down, my friend gave him a big, unarmed grin and continued browsing while I shopped. As for selection, if you like plastic handles full of regret, you've come to the right place. Otherwise, you may have trouble. I had come to replenish the party's vodka and gin (both basically mid-shelf). The clerks found the vodka, but seemed entirely unaware of the gin I was seeking (a relatively common British gin, not some obscure or fancy one), so I went with another that they did have. Price-wise, it came to $62. We made it back to our party with the necessary booze unscathed. But I'd urge anyone looking for liquor in Toledo to go to Joseph's whenever possible and eschew this trip to the pages of the Toledo Blade's CrimeWatch section. If you must go, expect leery, unhelpful clerks, a truly bare-bones selection, and a generally depressing atmosphere. Watch your back and don't come here after dark.

Maumee Bay Brewing Company / Oliver House We arrived on…read moreSaturday for lunch on our way into town for a visit. This was always one of my favorite spots and I appreciate the variety of establishments available and wanted to include this on my small tour of Toledo. I positioned our stop at the top of the list after a quick tour of downtown and before a visit to the Libbey Glass Outlet and the Toledo Museum of Art. The Oliver House is a historical building with a view of the Maumee River in downtown Toledo. When commissioned by Major William Oliver, renowned architect Isaiah Rogers designed a first class modern hotel and located the building in the section of downtown referred to as the "Middlegrounds". The address is 27 Broadway St., Toledo, Ohio and it is the last remaining hotel standing designed by the architect. Venues: https://mbaybrew.com/ Brew Pub (2nd floor) Rockwell's (1st floor, River side of the building - steakhouse, open for dinner) The Cafe (1st floor) Mutz Sports Bar (1st floor) + Private Events + Museum - Bakery (this was my old favorite lunch spot back in the day) We planned to visit either the Brew Pub or The Cafe for lunch - the menu is very similar, but I had wanted to get a river view for my guest so I leaned toward the Maumee Bay Brewing Company "Brew Pub". Our lunch: combo 1/2 salad with quiche and 1/2 salad with chicken salad sandwich. $11.95 for 2- choice combo. Parking: ample - street parking, parking immediately around the building and a parking lot across the street Service: very good, friendly, efficient, attentive Menu: I will always miss the mussels; but there are still some favorites available on the menu.
