We enjoyed our stay in a log cabin. Nothing fancy but comfortable, clean and quiet. We would stay again.

Bob's Treehouse - Fire pit

Bob's Treehouse

This is the best vacation spot in the area and the only treehouse that I know of in Illinois that…read moreyou can rent. It can serve as a perfect romantic getaway or a get away from your romantic ones. The treehouse is located behind Bob Hopp's main estate and is 200 ft.² in size. It reminds me of a tumbleweed house if you are familiar with this particular brand that is made in California. In order to reach the Treehouse, you must follow a path located behind Bob's house that goes for about 8000 feet. Upon walking along it you will bump into a goat pen and meet the local residents Rango and Oreo. They are extremely friendly and curious about your presence, but I do not think they care to be pet. Shortly after passing the goat pen you will curve your way over to a large wooden bridge that is secured about 12 feet off the ground above a creek. The creek was frozen when we went in January but I imagine that there is a waterflow in spring. Once you make it across the bridge, you will encounter a steep gradient of hill that meanders its way to the front of the treehouse. Not to worry it is only about 100 feet of strenuous trudging. At the top you will find yourself at the front door. You may go along the platform to the right if you would prefer to enter through the rear entrance. Should you decide to walk your way to the back, you will find a bench that overlooks the side of the creek. if you continue walking you will stumble upon the shower which is operational during the warmer season. The rear of the house is also a great place to hang out at because it is the part that plateaus furthest from the hill. Once you enter the house either from the rear or the front, you will encounter the living room. Here you will find a leather couch and two reading chairs. The front of the living room hosts the microwave, flatscreen TV, space heater, granite countertop, audio receiver, And refrigerator. To the right of this entertainment area is where the bathroom can be found. There is a compost toilet available and a sink with running water during the warm season. During the cold season, Bob provides a 5 gallon jug of water for all of your needs. Above the living room and bathroom area, one will find a loft that is accessible by ladder. This is where the bedroom is located. The room provides a dim ambience or a brighter one should you care to differentiate. There is also a queen bed that is found here where one can take advantage of heated blankets. A couple of side notes, There are plenty of outlets to plug in electronic items. There is Wi-Fi in case you would like to surf the net. The space heater keeps you very warm throughout the day and evening. The refrigerator is stocked with bottled water, complements of the owner. There is dishes and silverware available next to the microwave. There are paper towels on the granite countertop. there is a garbage that is located next to the granite countertop. There are bathroom supplies like toothpaste in case you forget yours stacked away in the bathroom drawer. there is a DVD player in case you wanted to curl up with your honey and watch some movies together. I am sure I am probably forgetting to mention some of the other perks but for now this will have to do. Besides this being a beautiful and scenic area to spend a weekend at, the owner makes the experience even that much more wonderful. He is a very kind and generous man. He offered suggestions on places to eat, shared some of his personal brew with us, and welcomed us to help ourselves to his log pile in order to have firewood for the fire pit. Which by the way, Bob recently told us he has the intentions to redesign the fire pit and even more interestingly enough to design a completely new treehouse this one being much further off the ground. I can't wait to see it. More importantly I cant to cross paths with Bob again. He was a wonderful host and we couldn't have asked for more. Feel free to check out the website that I provided on this page to see more pictures and reviews. Also feel free to book a trip. From November 1 to March 31 the rates are $65 a night outside of that range rates are $95 a night. Either way both times of year is money well spent.

To say I am disappointed with this business would be an understatement. I truly feel like I had a…read morebait and switch situation happen. I rented the Barlow and the Lamoreaux homes for a family reunion (we had 35 people and needed both these homes to make sure everyone had a bed). I had put a down payment a year ahead and paid in full more than three months ahead of our stay. The morning of our check-in day I get an email that the Barlow home was no longer available due to "circumstances beyond his control" BUT that he found us a different accommodations but not in Nauvoo it would be in Hamilton. Since it wasn't in Nauvoo, if we didn't want it he would offer us a refund. We were on our second day of traveling as was much of our family. The home he found for us (although I don't want to throw shade towards this property because the owner out of the goodness of his heart offered this home before it was finished, and ready for regular renting out realizing there was no other place for such a large group at this short notice) was as I mentioned before, not quite ready for renters, was 10 beds less than the Barlow home, and about 20 to 30 minutes from Nauvoo. When I brought this to the attention of Bob from Vacation Nauvoo he said he would give me an adjustment. For a full week I paid $3900 (not including fees and taxes) for the Barlow home and he offered me $400 as an adjustment. If we were strictly going by price per bed we expected at least $1392.86 (which is the difference in price per bed). We didn't even include an extra amount for the HUGE inconvenience it was being separated in different cities and the extra amount of money my family had to pay for gas going from Hamilton to Nauvoo and back each night. Once I demanded a larger adjustment he stopped all contact and didn't return my emails or answer my phone calls. It is now a few days since we checked out and even longer since he said he would process an adjustment immediately, I have yet to even receive the $400 he initially offered us. It was great seeing all our family and learn and see some LDS history but the housing mess added a small dark cloud over the reunion.

RE: Porter Rockwell Ranch/Vacation Nauvoo Below is a summary…read moreof all email activity during and after our stay at Porter Rockwell Ranch. 08 July Me: First night here. Reading reviews of other places you offer and wishing I were in one of those but perhaps they are fake reviews? This place was not prepared for us. We have spent our time killing spiders since we got here. Cobwebs everywhere. The front door had spiders everywhere but every room had numerous cobwebs. One bathroom had five separate spider webs with live spiders. If I had invited someone into my home I would have cleaned first. It's awful. No one wants to go to sleep. Took several scrubbings to clean the grease and debris from the top of the refrigerator so we could put things on it. Afraid to use cupboards. Don't trust their condition. The freezer appears to work but the refrigerator has not cooled our food. We have our all our ice packs from our coolers in there to cool things. The AC in one of the bedrooms is stuck at 62. Way too cold. Was told tonight that the expectation is that a new remote is here and will be installed tomorrow. I have my doubts. If it were here it should have been installed prior to our arrival. I feel I have been taken. We have two more nights here and probably no other options. You have my money and I am embarrassed and upset that I brought my family here. It would have taken so little to clean, have appliances inspected, and mowed a path to the back door. 09 July Me: I appreciate the activity this morning. I missed the opportunity to speak to you. I do hope someone is addressing the refrigerator issue as well. Things in the fridge have condensation on them now. Everything is wet. The freezer packs we put in seem to be working but the fridge is not. PRR: We just spoke with your family, and are happy to process a refund today. We do not have another property available. We are sorry for the inconvenience and hope you find another place that is more acceptable. Me: We obviously cannot leave. We have plans that keep us here and as you stated there is nowhere to go. I feel that some kind of compensation is still appropriate even though we are staying. Obviously you have the control here and I will have to abide with your decisions regarding compensation. The bottom line is that had this place been clean, relatively free of bugs and spiders and the remote available for the AC we would not even have had a conversation. I do understand that your position is difficult. I hope you can see that mine is as well. 11 July Me: Update Thursday Is there a reason 1) you never responded to my last email? 2) you never brought the AC remote? 3) we have NO hot water this morning? I expect a refund for two nights. I am willing to pay for electricity and water. This place is really NOT clean and NOT usable. We are certain some sheets were reused. The floors are dirty and sticky. I am so disappointed that once you realized this problem is/was bigger than could be taken care of you just quit responding. Happened on the phone the first night after two calls and e-mail after two emails. Please don't run a business in Nauvoo like this. I am NOT a mean person. I am someone who can be worked with. I was sorely disappointed that when the manager came the first morning it was a "don't make eye contact" and judgement visit. I felt as if I were an imposition, certainly not a customer. Someone needs some serious public relations training. I hope you can do the right thing and I sincerely hope your next renter comes to a very clean place with proper AC and lots of hot water. 15 July Me: Good morning. I must conclude again that because you cannot answer my questions without showing yourselves to be less than honest, you have decided not to answer. I will pursue another course of action. It truly pains me that you can do business in Nauvoo without concern for the basic principles of cleanliness and honesty. PRR: We have replied to each email, and as we previously stated, you were in fact offered a full refund (including the night you had already stayed) if you wanted to find other accommodations. You chose to stay. Upon leaving you requested a refund for two nights (which you had spent at the property). We cannot grant a refund if the guest occupied the property, at their own request. We are sorry you felt the property was unacceptable, and we're sorry about the air conditioning remote control issue, it was beyond our control (a previous guest had removed the remote). We made several trips to the property to attempt to address all of your concerns. We have hundreds of happy guests each year, we are truly sorry that you were not among them. Summary: 1) They did not respond to every email 2) They did not apologize about the condition of the property nor did they fix it. The "trips" to the property were token. 3) Dirty, dirty, dirty 4) The "offer" for us to leave would certainly have saved them further grief. Larrie C Utah

UPDATE: A few years…read moreago the new owner, Wayne, messaged me to ask me to remove my review, which was damaging to the home he now manages. He tried to defend what the previous manager told him, which he has no way of knowing was true or not. He insulted me for refusing to remove my review. I WILL say that if this rental is under new management, then perhaps it is worth a try, for anyone reading this.

My family has been coming here for years. We quite enjoy it. It's not like most vacation homes, b&b…read moreor hotels. The name says it.. it's an Inn! We don't mind the old time vibe. My mom LOVES the traditional style. It works for us. We use the kitchen as in any home, it's the hub. We like sitting at the table and getting together, eating, talking and or playing games. It feels like visiting grandma's house. It's not updated, there aren't many modern convinces aside from TV's in some of the rooms and free WiFi all around. Our family doesn't require much more than that. In way of amenities there's a grill and a hot tub, it's not huge and not everyone can use it at once but 3-4 people fit comfortably. In my opinion it's the best place to stay at in nauvoo. There isn't another place like it. Also, Carol has met our needs every time we've come. She's accommodated late arrival and extended checkout time, with a small fee. The kitchen is fully stocked with cookware. There aren't many places to eat here, it's nice to make our own meals whenever we'd like. A nice bonus is whole wheat pancake mix that the bakery provides as well as the fixings for it. If you don't mind things being on the traditional side and enjoy simpler things, this is the place to stay. It's quite, clean and family friendly.
