I added a 2nd star for proximity walking to a couple food establishments and a large store. The breakfast buffet was okay and the staff working that area were the kindest (earning the 3rd star) we interacted with during our stay.

The rooms were fresh, modern, and clean. Amenities - There was a pool available onsite. The water wasn't heated but it wasn't cold either. Food - Complimentary breakfast was basic to what you find at other Hamptons. Good and filling. Staff - Everyone we met was professional and friendly. We got here late and the front desk staff were super friendly to my kids. After a long day of driving, the lady was a cherry on top of our day. She treated us like royalty, I don't think I have been treated better as a Hilton Diamond member and Hampton Inns don't have much they can offer as extra. Way to go. Now I would be willing to let this mistake go if it was the only one during our 4 day stay, but alas it's not. This was the second call from the front desk to negatively affect our sleep. The first one was at 12am, yes midnight, on Sunday (or Monday depending on how you look at it). Someone at the front desk couldn't find a card for our room (or something?) So their solution was to call and wake us up at 12am. Why? I have no idea. And just mere hours before we had to wake up for a funeral no less. So now that while I'm awake in the middle of the night again, why am I writing this review now? Well because I can't fall back to sleep due to all the clanging showers, banging drawers, and slamming doors of the thoughtful people in the rooms next to us. Our room (we stayed in the main house) was decorated with antiques and wonderful old quilts, and faced the iron wagon bridge spanning the Des Moines River...we walked back and forth across this bridge several times. Next to the inn are several interesting shops with varying hours of operation...the general store was fun to browse through, and sells awesome homemade fudge. We did not have an in-room refrigerator, and didn't expect one but would recommend bringing a small cooler if wanting to keep drinks or food cold for more than a few hours (I did notice a mini fridge in the dining room)....also, most of the toiletries are provided upon request only. The inn has a colorful past which was fun to read about. If wanting a peaceful and interesting getaway I'd highly recommend staying here!
