This is a lovely little branch of Lloyds TSB in Penarth, which has been particularly helpful over my re-establishment in the country. They were very good at not raising too many eyebrows after I returned after 18 months and proceeded to withdrawn all money from overdrafts (to eat, mind you, not to jump on to a pyramid scheme). The staff there have been friendly and on the ball every time I go in. They remembered my plights and happily organised everything without a moment's fuss. This branch is pretty quiet, but can get busy during the middle of the day, but even then customers are dealt with very swiftly and politely. Well done Lloyds! A welcome change in the world of banking.

No, i just want to mention how incredibly friendly and helpful the staff are at this branch. Obviously, like every human being with a bank account i've got my beef with banks, the charges, the fact its not 24 hours, the queues and those stupid microphone things that everyone can hear you asking whether you have more than 50p in your account. But this particular branch is super relaxed, super friendly and in general a fantastically run establishment. Now, i don't like to mention any names (*cough*Natwest*across the road*cough*) but the bitch behind the counter made me weep, like a proper girl in there once so i immediately closed the account marched the ten or eleven paces to Lloyds where they gave me a cup of tea and a tissue, i have never looked back since!

When they answer the phone there they quickly double check that it's really the Canton branch you want, because they have so any calls for the other one. I often go into this bank, and have been with them for many, many years. This is that bank that I have always dealt with for any major changes to my accounts and life situations. Because it's so small, it also seems intimate and friendly, especially when compared to many of the bigger banks in town. A friend of mine recently came over from New Zealand and commented that British banks are big and serious and scary. Which is completely true! In New Zealand you get to sit down, have a chat and listen to ABBA. Fortunately, nice little banks like this one in Canton exist here too. Having literally just come off the phone with them, they were exceptionally helpful and polite; providing a more personable service than we might be used to over the phone.

As it's a small town you can usually drop in and see a personal banker without too much waiting although the desks are right near the entrance so private conversations don't exactly feel private. Lunchtime queues can be a bit mad so best to avoid between the hours of 12 and 2.

However, the staff obviously have targets to meet and I am always being asked whether I would like an appointment to have a financial review. (Jargon for what can we sell you to make lots of money out of you.) The staff can be a bit grumpy when I decline their offer. There is free parking on the surrounding streets although it can be a bit hit and miss actually finding a space, especially in the tourist season.

It is a place regularly used by the locals for everyday use and for the visiting tourists. NatWest is a good bank though, they are very helpful. An open top bus which tells you all about the history of Cardiff in relation to the places it travels to. There are many other buses to take you to all the areas of Cardiff and to some places just beyond this city also. The city centre tends to be very busy with traffic and people. These are often where I go. I'm not a crazy shopper, nor do I always have the money to spend, so for those; very mad, addictive, shop a holicks this is the town centre to be! A fabulous to socialise, but not to unwind or relax, but to get what you need and to get become organised and the things you need done. It depends where you stay in relation to how you get there and I travel by bus in less a family member kindly gives me a lift, Richmond Road is where Kings Monkton school, just before Dumfries Place bus stop, all of which you will soon see the town centre staring you in the face with Sainsbury's looking straight at you and Queen street (the street it's on).

It is situated on the corner of St Mary's street opposite Capitol shopping centre. Usually when I go to the bank I am left waiting for ages to cancel a direct debit or pay a bill but this bank offers a meet and greet service. As soon as I walked into this bank I was pounced upon (in a nice way) by members of staff eager to help. If they can avoid you queueing for a cashier they will. They have shown me how to use the rapid deposit box when I am paying in checks and set me up with an online account so I can manage my account from home. I love the fact these guys try and make my banking quicker and easier.

The staff just seem more laid back here and there's never much of a queue which allows me to spend as little time as I possibly can in it. Ah, thank God for this HSBC branch…read more Since the St. Mary's Street branch got converted into a Sainsbury's about a year or so ago, the main HSBC branch has been that godforsaken monstrosity in Queen Street. You know the one; it is run by machines and is going to be the base command for the first attack when SkyNET eventually takes over and Terminator becomes a reality just like James Cameron warned us. And I hate that branch with a passion that could consume suns. Thankfully, we have this branch just off of Churchill Way to salve the wound. Whilst the Queen Street branch tries to speed up the banking process with an array of machines, requiring customers to have a PhD just to be able to cash a cheque, this branch manages to be both efficient and populated by humans, instead of rampaging frustration-bots. Seeing as everyone seems to prefer the main branch, this one remains blissfully quiet, allowing you to complete your banking quickly and quietly, without surrounding you in the whirrs of machines and the slams of foreheads hitting ATM screens in frustration.

The ATM situated outside is also conveniently placed for wheelchair users or those with mobility scooters. Inside the branch often has fresh flowers and the staff are very friendly. The branch is quite small and there are only 3 windows, two of which are often closed so you can sometimes wait a while if there is a queue.If you require more privacy for your transactions, private rooms are available.
