I went back to Natural Tunnel again and stayed in the exact same cabin. Did several of the trails, and was mostly completely by myself, and it was fantastic! Got to see the Tunnel from 3 different angles, Stock Creek for north side, Tunnel Trail for south, and the Lover's Leap for the bird's eye view, with real birds roosting and everything!! It's an amazing place surrounded by interesting things if you dare to adventure out!!

Natural Tunnel is a great place to go on a hike with your dog or family/friends :) gorgeous views especially in the fall.

Lover's Leap Laundry Facility was super clean and well stocked. The bathrooms were even cleaner.

I've been camping for 35 years and have never seen a campground run as well as this one. We were supposed to just stay here for a night as we travelled from Cumberland Gap down to Myrtle Beach. We ended up staying a second night because this place was so awesome. The staff was so friendly and took their jobs very seriously. The park rangers really take pride in this facility, and it shows. If you can, stay in the Lover's Leap Loop - it's newer than the original one and has more shade. The bathrooms were spotless, everything was freshly cleaned and well maintained. I really enjoyed the campsites, they were large and flat, had lights to guide you in if you are backing up at night, and a really nice firepit. In addition to camping, the park has a really nice pool area with picnic shelters and a meeting / conference building. They are also building really nice cabins and expanding their hiking trail network. Other activities here include a nice chairlift ride down to the tunnel itself (which is pretty well ADA accessible if you can maneuver into a chairlift). I was pleasantly surprised by all of the hiking, there were more than 15 miles of hikes on the property and all of them were very pretty. If you are visiting the Cumberland Gap area or are looking for a nice place to camp, fish and relax in the Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee area; I really recommend you consider this park.

Beautiful clouds hovering over the trail leading to lover's leap (interesting backstory if you like history).

Absolutely gorgeous state park, words couldn't even begin to describe. Stopped spur of the moment on a roadtrip from WV to TN, in hopes to find a restroom, but ended up finding so much more! Our 5 minute pit stop ended up being 2 hours. $5 admission fee per vehicle. Well worth the price for all they have to offer. My first ride on a chair lift $4 per person for a round trip. They let us take our little PomChi (8 lb dog) free of cost. We explored Lover's leap and enjoyed the plaques displaying the legendary story. My boyfriend and I made a pact we will make a trip down to rent a cabin or take advantage of their camping area. We also lucked out and got to see a train!! This place is a must see.

I only just caught them at the end of the day, but the re-created fort was a window back into late colonial history when the nearby Cumberland gap was the route by which what is now Kentucky was settled. I chatted up some historical reenactors briefly. The mountainside aesthetics are majestic. The range of places that are under Virginia State Park control are impressive. Even as a current southwestern Virginian myself, this is at least four hours away. It is so far into the tiny little tail of Virginia. But I had driven by this area before and not stopped and I am glad I found the opportunity to do so.

During the warmer months, historic re-enactors demonstrate how things may have looked back in the days when settlers were gathering to attempt passage through the Cumberland Gap (nearby!) and settle the Midwest. The old fort even allows you to enter the buildings and look around! There were animals on site, and we even saw a baby bison (from a safe viewing distance along a trail of course, they aren't free range!) I was really impressed with the thatched roof in the Native American settlement, and if you can, start at the Daniel Boone Wilderness Center, then drive here to follow the historic path to the west!

Hidden away in the mountains of southern VA, is a great lake with water that looked crystal clear! You can paddleboat, kayak, canoe and swim! The swim spot is more than twice the size of Lake Anna State Park. And surrounded by the beautiful mountains. I hiked the 6 miles around the lake with the stop off ay Molly's Knob. It's gorgeous! I had preplanned this trip to see these parks down here many months ago. While, I camped in a tent at Claytor Lake, I rented a Yurt for two nights here at Hungary Mother. I've never stayed in a Yurt before and I loved it! It was hot though, don't get me wrong. That Yurt was like a volcano tube all day and 1/2 the night. Luckily I was gone during the daytime and due to location, around 3am to 6am it wasn't very hot at all. LoL. Mountains make the difference! The Yurt was spacious and lovely. I'll rent again in the future. Employees were nice. Gift shop was amazing. Unlike most other state parks, this one had long trails. Like I said, one was 6 miles..usually, at other parks, they have .5 and .9 mile trails that you peice together to make a 6 mile trail. Those who've been, know what I mean. My favorite VA State Park is Sky Meadows. Perfect for me and only 25 min from my house. Hungry Mother is second place winner for me!! Love it!

It was close to lunch time, so we decided to go to check it out and have a picnic lunch there, lake-side. Road signage to the main part of the park wasn't great, and our GPS took us to the campground which was a few miles from the Visitor's Center. A camper sent us in the right direction. We stopped at the Visitor's Center, paid the $7 parking fee, spoke with staff, and picked up a map. We learned from staff that Hungry Mother was one of VA's original six state parks. It's known for its woodlands and placid 108 acre lake. It offers miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing, boating (including rentals), a beach (with concessions in-season), camping and cabin rentals, and special events and programs. Our goal though was to take a short walk and to find a place to eat our picnic lunch! We found the Lake Trail loop, which is a 5.7 mile hiking and biking trail. The first mile parallels Park Blvd, and was gently rolling and relatively flat. Plus, it had picnic tables lake-side! Hungry Mother State Park was a pleasant place to stop during our travels. We hope to return in the future to explore it further. Slight mark-down in rating due to insufficient signage and for charging $7 for parking for a short visit and even when most amenities were still closed off-season. This is state of VA policy, not specific to Hungry Mother.

The path leading up the slope was carved out by volunteer firefighters, and while it is steep in places, it offers a rewarding climb with views that unfold as you ascend. It's medium difficulty. The park features a few picnic tables scattered near the base, inviting visitors to linger and enjoy the sound of rushing water. The falls themselves are double-tiered, flowing over rugged stone, and a natural rock bridge allows you to cross to the other side with reasonable footing. I had the place entirely to myself today, and despite the questionable wisdom of climbing solo, I made it up and back without incident. The experience was peaceful and memorable, and I left with a handful of beautiful photos and a sense of quiet satisfaction. Locally, the site is also known as Bobby McLean Memorial Park, named in tribute to a respected community figure whose legacy lives on in this serene corner of Newland.
