Brookfield Farm is our CSA…read more What is a CSA, you ask? Community Supported Agriculture. Basically, you pay the farm some cash, and they grow food. Tons and tons of food. Organically. Biodynamically. Locally. Then, they pack up a ton of boxes and send them off to the Boston area, where you can pick up your box. Every week, from June to November, there is a box full of tasty, fresh, local veggies waiting for you. It can't be beat. They are really good with telling you what you are getting (this is particularly helpful for those who are not veggie geeks). They put out a newsletter each week telling you what is new on the farm, what new foods you will see in your box, and they even include recipes. Because now that you have a four-pound bok choy, you need to figure out what to do with it. If you live closer to the farm, you can pick up your food there, and you can stop by for all the pick your own goodies (strawberries, peas, flowers). We will definitely do this again and would recommend it to anyone!

There are usually popsicles involved, and picking berries, and seeing old friends and making new ones. We made a trip out to the farm this summer to "pick your own" and that was definitely worth the drive from Boston. Lots of fresh veggies and flowers all included in the cost of your normal share. Everyone there was very friendly! The only downside to the CSA is the occasional lack of variety. LOTS of greens most of the summer, and heavy on the root veggies in the fall/winter. For the most part it's a good variety, but could mix it up a bit more maybe? Overall a great value and we'll be back next summer for sure!

You get ~23 weeks of goodness, from June to October/November. Each week the boxes are filled to the brim with seasonal goodies. There is even a swap box at the pickup location so you can switch an item out if you absolute hate something like.. beets. There are many locations in Cambridge/Watertown/Arlington/Belmont, and I think the people there are genuinely sweet and accommodating to your needs. One of my favorite things about this CSA - when they have an overabundant harvest of certain things, they share it with you! This year we got an extra 10 lbs of eggplant, extra 10 lbs of MONSTER carrots, and my absolute favorite - extra 20 lbs of tomatoes (see picture). They charge a little if you want the extra tomatoes because they have to pay additional labor for harvest and delivery, but it's well worth it. I love, love Picadilly Farm and high recommend their CSA to anyone interested. Well... unless you don't like vegetables. Then you shouldn't do it. =P

Peaches the best we've tasted, The bouquet (via Old Friends Farm) was exquisite, calaloo green (first I'd tasted these, but similar to Amaranth) delicious, fresh, and delicate and the pickling cukes (not pickled, but eaten) the best I've tasted (even from my own garden). This review is for the CSA, compost delivery, and the maple syrup season pancake breakfasts…read more Our CSA experience got off to a rocky start because we had trouble paying our balance online because there wasn't an option for the right amount. But once that was sorted it has been pretty epic. Lots and lots of in-season fresh veggies, "market style" so you pick what you'll use more of, and the farm partners with a few places to offer some things they don't grow themselves (e.g. peaches). Pick up has been smooth and consistently easy. The only small downer has been the "pick your own" section in the lower fields. There's inadequate signage and a lot of times when we go to look for things on the week's board we can't find them or they are picked out. Once or twice l've seen other customers pick things not on the board which always makes us a little sad. This "added benefit" of the CSA has just mostly not worked for us. We had compost delivered by the farm once. Getting notified about the delivery took awhile, but once we were scheduled communication was clear and the delivered product has seemed to be excellent at helping our plants grow. Lastly, we have gone to the farm for pancake breakfasts with maple syrup. Go hungry! These pancake meals have been a good fit for our family: plenty to eat, casual and no frills, and tasty. We don't go regularly (because I can make pancakes at home) but it's a nice little splurge for a day when no one has to cook or clean.

Today was buffet as it's maple sugar weekend with larger crowds. Plans are probable cook to order as the season progresses. Delicious oven baked fluffy scrambled eggs, blueberry & plain pancakes, French toast, their own ham & sausage, maple cured kielbasa, smoky 2 bean baked w/ their bacon and maple of course. Farm made no added sugar apple sauce w/cinnamon of local grown apples. Coffee, tea, orange juice available. On the tables, 3 varieties of syrup. Everything was served hot and super satisfying. If you like milk, this is the place to get it. Actually, they have put their milk in many stores now so getting their milk might be as easy as going to a store any where in this area. The milk is taken from Jersey Cows which is not always the case with larger milk companies. Because of this, the milk tastes better as the foods solids within the milk are always present no matter whether it's whole milk or skim. No blue colored milk here! The store itself has some weird hours so call before you go. They also have chocolate milk, strawberry milk and in the winter egg-nog. All of these are to die for!

My kids loved this milk, it's so good it's not even comparable to Hood or Garelick or any other store bought milk. Their ice cream is delicious! They've got a bunch of flavors too, but my favorite is the sweet cream flavor. I highly recommend you stop here for some fresh milk and ice cream!
