Probably 95% of the guest had never been to Rathbun Lake and was so impressed on how beautiful it was. Our guest stayed at hotel, cabins, & campground and everyone was happy. The staff couldn't have done a better job! Very knowledgeable on how everything should be run and I asked them lots of questions! They were right there to transport guest that needed help getting around. I could go on more about how happy and impressed we were but the bottom line for me, was how happy the bride & groom were. The innkeeper was kind and welcoming, but also gave us space...breakfast was plentiful--eggs, sausage, toast, and coffee. They do take special dietary requests, and asked us about that when we arrived... Our room (we stayed in the main house) was decorated with antiques and wonderful old quilts, and faced the iron wagon bridge spanning the Des Moines River...we walked back and forth across this bridge several times. Next to the inn are several interesting shops with varying hours of operation...the general store was fun to browse through, and sells awesome homemade fudge. We did not have an in-room refrigerator, and didn't expect one but would recommend bringing a small cooler if wanting to keep drinks or food cold for more than a few hours (I did notice a mini fridge in the dining room)....also, most of the toiletries are provided upon request only. The inn has a colorful past which was fun to read about. If wanting a peaceful and interesting getaway I'd highly recommend staying here!

I asked to borrow the bath towels to go swimming and within minutes Diane was at our door with beach towels. It's been a tradition in our family for the last 10 years or so to go to One of A Kind for lunch…read morewhen we're visiting family at Lake Thunderhead. Our favorite meal is the chicken salad on a croissant and side salad with homemade lemon poppy seed dressing. Both are excellent and always one of the highlights of our visits to the area. The owner is a darling woman and the B&B is charming. We also like looking through the first floor shop area and usually find something special to take home.
