One of THE BEST, and I mean BEST organic all natural stores is Natural Grocers. They were not first in Wichita but they were second before all the other stores started to pop up! They have a philosophy and stick to it and expect the products they carry to follow through with it. I went in there once to pick up some organic greek yogurt and found out that the way the product was made or animals used for the product did not meet the stores specific standards so they stopped carrying the product and so I stopped buying it from other stores as well. I love knowing the store is always looking to meet the best quality possible! They also run monthly adds which is great. I can try something new one week, fall in love with it, and it's still on sale next week to go buy some more. They also have a great pre-packaged bulk department with goods of all kind. My fav is the dried tart (no sugar added) cherries... expensive but worth it! To me they have the largest and best selection of vitamins. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't have known there were options for vegetarian capsules for my vitamins. On Friday I love going to Natural Grocers because the Flying Stove typically shows up with their always changing menu. Everything is good! Try it then because there is a chance you won't find that same item on their menu for a while. You can also eat whatever you buy for lunch at the Flying Stove inside in the reading, relaxing area in Natural Grocers. Pay attention when you go to the store because sometimes they advertise classes they teach which are always beneficial for your health. Sometimes they have sample fairs of some kind, but not as often as Green Acers. Lastly, they FINALLY started a rewards system. It not great, I have not benefited from it too much, but hey it's a Start for going in the RIGHT direction for their customers. read more

Wichita has experienced quite an influx of "natural grocery stores" in the past few years, with more to come (Whole Foods on it's way) - but there's something about this place I really dig. It's homey, with WAY friendly staff, and the prices are unbelievable. I don't know anywhere else you can get a 1-lb bag of almond meal for under $5. For example. They've got all of the staples plus a unique selection of gluten free items I've yet to see at other similar stores - seems every time I got in there I find something new to try. Also a great place to go if you're looking for a specialty-type of items - any kind of flour, oil, spice, grain, etc, and lots of items for restrictive diets like vegan, soy free, paleo, and such. Tip: bring your own bag or expect to grab a recycled box to carry your items out of the store. read more

It bemoans me to give this place five stars because it's ridiculously cold inside...always, and is about as sterile as the morgue in a hospital. But Natural Grocers offers everything that any health food fanatic could ever rub a genie lamp for. It offers a slew of Bob's Redmill Flours for cheaper than the internet offers them - circa $2-$4 per product. There's a ton of gluten free options, sugar alternatives (ranging from coconut and date sugar to stevia to agave to unfiltered maple syrup and honey). The frozen section practically gives away hormone, preservative free bacon of the thick, thin, honey smoked and turkey varieties. There's gluten free buttermilk, raw milk, and oodles of other hard-to-find products...for cheaper than their mass-produced counterparts at traditional grocery stores. Of particular note is the health and beauty section...which offers a plethora of products for people suffering from crazy skin allergies...There's salon quality shampoo without parabins, sulfates and animal testing. There's an entire stock of lotions with (or without) natural scents. There's toothpaste, soap and makeup, all reasonably priced for its organic nature...and definitely underpriced relative to other places where "natural" products are available. Also, Natural Grocers offers up some amazing dark chocolate bars made with stevia - so there's no awkward, metallic chemical sweetener after taste...nor indigestion that follows after consuming some bizarre Atkins product. read more

I wish I had known that the Natural Grocer's was a bring your own bag kind of place, because I purchased too little for them to give me a box (Aldi-style), and almost too much for me to carry out on my own. I really didn't want to purchase a 4 dollar bag for my 7 dollars of produce and dairy, so I chose to juggle my items after I purchased them. There is nothing like setting your yogurt on your front seat right? Their selection is good for a natural grocer, although the fresh items (fruits and meats in particular) seemed to be picked over and mediocre. I was impressed with the number of hard to find items they carried, like No Pudge brownie mix and Yerba Mate Tea, but the shelves seemed to be picked over, much like the fresh produce and unfrozen meat parts. I do think that they offer great options for our Vegan and Gluten-Free friends, but be prepared to pay a bit more than from the natural section at Dillons. I'd like them more if they weren't a chain! read more

I grocery shopped solely at Target until Natural Grocers came to Wichita, at which point I transitioned my shopping bit by bit over the course of a couple months. Now I only shop at Target for a small handful of items, and I do all of my grocery shopping at NG. The store is somewhat small but they have everything you need. If they don't have it, ask and they'll get it for you! The staff here is so friendly and the quality of their products is very good. Favorite Item: Farmer's Hen House eggs. They're HUGE! read more

Many of the same products as Sprouts, very friendly, rewards program, high standards for dairy products, and free classes that earn you a $10 discount. They don't bag, they offer their cardboard stock boxes for you to carry your goodies home in. If you want bags, just bring some along. Great selection and a very pleasant surprise in Wichita!! Healthy? Not when packaged in plastic. More specifically, "bulk" usually refers to bulk bins in other healthy grocery stores, not bulk shipping then packaging them in smaller plastic bags. I'm not sure what the point is for using reusable bags when your "bulk" packaged foods are in plastic. "Bulk" is meant to be in bins for customers to buy what they need, eliminating wasted food and plastic in our oceans. I found the staff friendly and helpful. They have the best price for bulk quinoa in the city. Then it goes on sale periodically and it's even cheaper. Compared to the Green Acres and that other natural foods store that just opened in Bradley Fair, this one had a more coop feel. read more

The above address is no longer the only Natural Grocers in Wichita. There's a new one on 13th St, just west of Maise Rd. Yesterday there, I picked up an info sheet dated March 2014 that says (I'm condensing): "Animals should be raised humanely and in accordance with their natural biology.------ eliminating all products that come from confinement dairies. (Confinement dairies are dairies where the emphasis is on production, the animals do not graze on growing pasture and live their unnaturally shortened lives enclosed in a barn or dirt yard.)---- We hope that this move will=====encourage producers to shift to pasture-raised milk, and start a national conversation about what has happened to the way we grow and produce food in general and what has happened to the dairy industry specifically.-------We will offer only Organic and/or pasture-raised dairy products. (Organic dairy products are pasture-based dairy products. The National Organic Standards require 120 days of pasture grazing during the grazing season------minimum------.)" Trying not to make this too long, but it also explains that cows on confinement dairy farms have never even seen grass and are fed plastic pellets to make up for the fiber they're not getting. They get sick with mastitis, laminitis, etc, and only live 3-5 years instead of the up to 20 years that nature would give them. It also says "We were among the first to ban dairy products from cows given bovine growth hormone (rBGH)." And "By April of 2015 (MY NOTE: THAT'S NOW) we will no longer sell dairy products that come from confinement dairies. Additionally, they must meet our other strict quality and human treatment standards." The list of 13 standards rules out antibiotics unless prescribed by a vet for a medical purpose, in which case the milk must test free of residues before it's sold. The list ends with "Tail docking is prohibited." I love that. Then they tell us (convincingly, I think) that milk from cows eating a natural diet will give us more conjugated linoleic acid, a better omega-3 to omega-6 ratio, and higher levels of vitamins A, E, K2, and the carotenes. "-----and contributing to the health of grassland ecosystems rather than creating antibiotic-contaminated manure lagoons." "------most farmers have no choice but be involved with the confinement system.----We felt we had to draw a simple, clear-cut line and provide a market that allows farmers to choose pasture-based methods.-----------we are providing them with valuable market for pasture-based dairy products." I grew up in Wichita but have been living in Colorado for the last 15 years. So during my last visit to Wichita, I was delighted to find there is a Natural Grocers there! In the last 6 years or so, I've gone natural and organic with my diet. I also discovered 3 years ago that I am highly sensitive to gluten and dairy, as is my daughter. Colorado has a lot of natural grocers including Whole Foods Market, and in my quest to find the best one, I stumbled upon Natural Grocers. I love Natural Grocers. They are extremely picky about the products that they carry. Their produce section is 100% organic and are usually cheaper than Whole Foods Market. If their produce looks mediocre, perhaps it's because they're not sprayed down with a bunch of chemicals to make them look pretty. Organic veggies and fruits taste amazing and have a lot more vitamins but sometimes don't look as good as the non-organic fruits and veggies sprayed with pesticides that are tasteless. Their gluten-free items are labeled on the shelves for easy find. Their meats come from sustainable and humanely raised ranches. I love their bulk items like their flours, spices, and herbs. I usually restock my herbs and spices for cooking from them and it ends up being cheaper that way. Since we're a gluten-free family, I usually buy my brown rice flour, quinoa flour, and coconut flour from them. I make my own tea mixes using their herbs and have bought peppermint, nettle leaves, rose hips, alfalfa, red raspberry leaf, dried ginger, etc in the past. I have also found that their So Delicious coconut milk, coconut milk yogurt, and coconut milk ice cream are priced so much cheaper than Whole Foods Market and King Soopers. And who can overlook their huge section of vitamins and supplements? They carry the biggest selection of any store I've been to and of the highest quality brands. They also have some supplements that are bulk, e.g. whey protein that I used to get before I found out my dairy sensitivity that they get from New Zealand. When I was at this Rock Road location, I did not have the chance to talk to anyone but at the Colorado locations, you can usually find someone who is extremely knowledgeable about all the products and give you excellent recommendations. They also have unbeatable customer service. I have left comments and suggestions in their suggestion box about different products and each time have had someone call me at home personally. Once they even started carrying a brand of eggs, Vital Farms, that I saw at Whole Foods but wondered if they were going to start carrying it. I did also visit the Fresh Market while in Wichita. It was my first time going to a Fresh Market and reminded me of Whole Foods Market in a way. However, I found quite a few food items with synthetic food dyes, preservatives, and trans fats (partially hydrogenated oils) in them. Natural Grocers does not allow any such ingredients in the products they carry. Wake up Wichita! You have a great natural grocer right here in your town. I have been to Green Acres during past visits to Wichita and Natural Grocers is much better, bigger, and cheaper. All the Natural Grocers here in Colorado are usually crowded because they have a very loyal customer base here. Not to knock Green Acres though as it appears they are locally owned. Interesting that another reviewer would comment that they're a chain because Dillons is a chain too, owned by big conglomerate Kroger. Also, if you forget your bag, they do have boxes that you can put your groceries in to carry out to the car instead of juggling your groceries. There is a variety of box sizes so they're not necessarily all big. Sometimes I load up on boxes from them if I have to ship out packages. Note: I do not work for the company.
