The more I stop here, the better I like it. Or I thought I did. My experiences have been all over the place: sometimes good, sometimes bleechh. This is not a store for one on a strict budget, but if you follow their ads and can shop their sales you can do well enough for a splurge or two. I agree with some of the other reviewers about the produce. It's hit or miss. The last few times, it's been good, at least early on the weekend. As the week goes on, the quality gets less. Shopping here is a matter of timing I've come to learn. With all that said, though, there are some good organic options in nearly every category, including the vitamin section. What has impressed me are the employees, with a few exceptions, they are friendly and helpful when I'm looking for something particular. I've tried a few of the store branded things, most of them are just as good as similar branded items. The natural cleaning products for instance, the glass cleaner, is good and doesn't have that vinegar or ammonia smell. That stuff makes up for some of the other less than stellar products. The store-branded non-GMO, organic, nuts and alternative flours are also winners. Natural Grocers has an impressive library/catalog or whatever you want to call it, in the back corner with information available on supplements, minerals, food and ingredient guides, and the like with a cross references. It's like having a compendium without having to buy multiple books to get the same information. From time to time they offer classes on healthy eating in their test kitchen in the back. Although Covid has put a halt to the test kitchen food preparation classes, according to the employees, those classes will be coming back at some point. read more

I like Natural Grocers as a whole but my last visit in Billings, MT was disappointing. I drove over 100 miles to the one closest to my current location because the ones I've been to in other states always have my favorite foods and supplements. This one didn't have anything. The produce here is forty-seven exclamation points worth of horrible. There are so many wrinkly, mushy, rotten pieces of food, you're more likely to grab a bag with something moldering inside than not. There is also a suspicious amount of produce manipulation. Carrot ends, tops and bottoms, are often lobbed off, but also the daikon radishes have been pre-peeled at times, and we recently witnessed an employee peeling the outer leaves from the Brussels sprouts, making us wonder if bad parts are simply removed and the item is set out as fresh. If it wasn't one of the only places to get organic produce, we'd never shop here. The remainder of the store is dark and a little cramped, though generally well-stocked. They always have full shelves, everything is organized. Unfortunately, some things are beyond the best by dates. The prices are high, as you'd expect, but if you're looking for a little taste of what other cities have in Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, this is the closest you'll get, which isn't saying much. read more

I will be honest with you, I've given up on the standing order thing. The latest excuse was they were doing inventory and just forgot to order my order. This was a month ago and even though I've stopped back in they still haven't remembered to order. So if you are going in for Tazo Iced Green bottled tea, you better beat me there. I'm just going to clear their shelf and possibly the cooler. Other than that the selection for dairy free is very good and we're addicted to the vegetarian chocolate chip muffins. Every time I go to Natural Grocers I leave craving funnel cake and have an unexplainable desire to play cornhole and ride a sketchy Ferris wheel. Perhaps it's due to the fact that 90% of Natural Grocers employees and clientele look like carnival rejects. This location is no exception. Lousy produce. Ridiculous prices. Decent selection of harder to find items. The older cashier that checked us out on this particular visit was an absolute doll. So sweet and helpful. We've been coming here since it opened. Aside from getting a couple Organic items from Costco, this is the only place we shop for groceries. In fact, I'm there 3 - 5 times a week grabbing a couple of these and a few of those. We like the fact that most of their items actually register on the "healthy" scale. Natural grocers has been my go-to grocer for local and organic fare for a long, long time. This location has kombucha on sale-I'm pretty sure in perpetuity. If you like the Booch-this is your place to stock up. This location does not disappoint. The four stars are for the pricey and not greatly stocked produce section. I understand that they carry local and in-season produce, which is the way we SHOULD purchase and consume food. But in reality, as a vegetarian i want to mix it up sometimes and get out of season produce. Produce aside, their alternative "meat" section is awesome. Their pickles are actually cheaper than anywhere else. Their Amalthea goat cheese is cheaper than at the co-op or luckys. They have knowledgeable staff and I love getting info on new natural beauty products. They will give you samples!! read more

The friendliest staff! We usually visit on Saturdays and the produce gentleman is always offering my kiddos a sample of new fruits and such, just so friendly and engaging with them. The prices are very comparable, the food is great quality and the staff is always willing to help not just in locating items but in offering information regarding those products. We love our visits! The employees working here are very knowledgable of the health products and are really helpful. If they don't have exactly what you're looking for, they'll find you something similar. They have a huge/amazing section of bath products, toiletries, essential oils, etc. And even though the store is busy, they greet you when you walk in, which is always nice. read more

I have been a loyal but infrequent customer, but will never return. A sign out front told me I didn't REALLY have to wear a mask & that staff may not be. Sorry to discover that health is just a scam to them. Do not buy food or health products from people who don't prioritize public health - who knows what they really believe about food safety or intact packaging on medicine. 1.5 stars. Poor rotation and quality of produce really undermines the experience for me as it has for several other reviewers, especially lately. Unfortunately, the marketing of the store and the lack of volume sales means poor turnover on top of generally poor quality organic produce. The vitamin and supplements parts of the store are completely gimmicky and valueless. Contrast this store with Bozeman's excellent Co-op or the soon to be opening powerhouse Whole Foods of Bozeman and you come up short every time. Natural Grocers has not innovated or done a good job of marketing (cooking classes, events, community advertising and outreach, even simple things like offering coffee or food samples to customers) so they have not been able to expand or take a hard look at quality control. Even non-perishable items often have stocking problems. True, the staff and cashiers are friendly but the bottom line is the store isn't competitive and will almost certainly not exist as more and better competition continues to develop. Natural Grocers sadly have not learned the important lessons from the failures of both Lucky's and Good Earth Market, two stores that rested on apathetic ownership and management until they went out of business. read more

Came in just to look around since I just moved to Billings. I ended up buying some things because they have a great variety of fairly priced local organic food. Their sale priced items were a great value. I also like that they have a lot of local organic meat and dairy choices. They seem to have something for everyone. Very nice Lady at checkout told us about the chain and in store goings on (cooking demos etc.. ) I liked it here and I'll be back. read more

Top o' the notch organic grocery store in Billings, where I stopped on a roadtrip trying to find wholesome food options. It was great, plenty of vegan options, as well as not vegan for my friend. I love the cafe area and hot food, and the rest of the grocery store has great products including some that I have had trouble finding at regular grocery stores. I'm all in for Co-Ops!!! read more

Very disappointed. My wife and I are visiting from Hawaii and had gotten a basket of goodies to take back with us. There was only one line open (although there were a couple of other lines with a cashier helping someone, the line had a closed sign displayed). We waited while the people ahead of us was being helped. A young man came to us as we got to the line and mentioned that line 4 may be open, but decided it wasn't. After a few more customers lined up behind us, he took them and opened another line. It turns out, the person in front of us (was actually two in front because the checkout person in line 1 helped the person right in front of us) couldn't find their wallet or charge card. The checkout person never apologized to us, or asked someone else to help us even though by this time, quite a few other customers had been helped. read more

This is my favorite store in Billings. I come to town about once every week or two weeks, and make it point to stop and stock up here. The store is nice and clean, prices are very reasonable (especially with different sale items each week), and the staff is very friendly and efficient. I always buy Kombucha, which I have had a hard time finding elsewhere. (Albertson's carries it, but not the same selection.) Some of the items are a little more expensive than Wal-Mart, but I would much rather support this store. They have the right attitude about healthy food without a lot of chemicals for ingredients. They also have fresh organic produce, and a huge section of vitamins and supplements, essential oils, herbs, etc. I even appreciate that you have to bring your own bags -- instead of polluting the planet with yet more plastic. Being a frequent traveler to California, I would compare Natural Grocers to Trader Joe's (although not as large), Sprouts, or FreshNEasy. All of these have points in their favor, but I LOVE THIS STORE!!!! read more
