Officially all in for the spring share with this local CSA. It makes eating local produce that much…read moreeasier since I can't always get to the market. The CSA features produce from local farms, many are organic too. They break it out in seasons and now offering year-round options. For the spring share, I paid in full to reserve a weekly share with pick up at Three Heads Brewing - $64 for 4 weeks ($16 per week). They have several other pick up locations, days, times, and even delivery. I opted for the small share, which is good for 1-2 people for a week. So far I've enjoyed making recipes with a few ingredients I've never worked with before like green garlic, rhubarb, beets, etc. That's the most enjoyable part for me - the challenge of cooking with something new and going outside my comfort zone in the kitchen with new veggies and getting creative. In their weekly emails, they'll break down what types of veggies you'll be getting that week as well as recipes they've compiled on Pinterest, which is handy! In addition to the veggie shares, they have several other options you can add one, including eggs, meats (chicken, beef, pork, duck), fruits, veggie burgers, bread, yogurt, and coffee (they partner with Fuego and Joe Bean). I haven't opted in for any of these yet, but am intrigued and may consider it down the road to try more local meats, eggs, etc.

I'm really excited to have signed on with a friend for a share in this CSA! I'm sharing a share,…read moreand the weekly produce allotment has been great so far. I am really excited about the fall selection. Our first fall delivery had a great variety of (mostly) vegetables and some fruit. Everything was so fresh, and the portions were perfect. The price is well worth what you get. They have a number of pick up locations that service the Rochester area, and a variety of private and open-to-public pre-box drop off sites. I think it's a great opportunity to really support local growers, and I'm excited that the food is coming to me for the next few weeks.

Duran's is one of the few places that is a small business, they support local, and are true to…read morethemselves and values. Karen goes above and beyond to help with anything. The local products she features are hidden gems sometimes. Great prices and quality. The store has expanded over the years and is very clean and organized. There are contests throughout the year. They also put on Duran's Down Home days, annually, to raise money for charities. It is a full year planning process in addition to all the work at the store.

I am so appalled by the way the owner handled my complaint, I don't even know where to begin…read more I was looking at Facebook events and a Farmer's Market popped up. The photo for the event showed their property with dozens of tents and vendors. Not ever having been to the farm myself I was unaware they didn't actually grow or sell produce (at least not that I saw when I was there), they mostly sell local goods and the milk through other vendors/local farms through a sign up program. (So there aren't any "farm products" to walk in and buy despite the fact that the store front is full) The event was listed as starting at noon, and my husband arrived shortly after and took a tour of the store. By 12:30 there was no other car on the lot but ours and one other car......no vendors, no nothing. We sat on the bench outside the store and waited. Nothing. I posted to the facebook event a civil comment saying I was disappointed that no actual vendors showed up and I had driven a pretty long way to get there, all for nothing, and ended up by saying I was pretty pissed off. After I posted that a vendor posted, announced themselves as a vendor, and said they were set up on time and basically that I was a liar and then told me to **** off. Then she had her friends come into the event and make nasty comments also, and the drama went on from there. Everything from "I can go to walmart if I don't like it" to "I must be off my meds". I sent the farm a message with my original complaint, and linked to the event and the vendor comments. I pointed out to the owner that her FB event doesn't link to her page or have many details. It's not like anyone seeing the event KNOWS it's a "new" or "grassroots" effort. Maybe she (or the vendors) just didn't realize that FB events can stand alone in a list of local events, and aren't just viewable to people who "like" their page and who might already know all about the company. I feel like I gave them the benefit of the doubt there. THEY TOOK ZERO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIER FALSE ADVERTISING. The owner messaged back (IE: in private, not in public like her vendors had done) saying no one speaks for her and that basically if I can't be patient with her grassroots effort to start a free market then I might be best served elsewhere because clearly I was starting drama. Far be it from me to drive 20 miles and expect an actual farmer's market. Regardless of what the owner says in private she's responsible for vendors using her land and her name whether they pay to set up at her event or not and they do reflect on her whether she wants them to or not. So much for this being a "Christian" establishment. Behavior like this is what ruins small businesses and why so many people don't want to support local businesses. No "real" company would ever treat a customer like this.

Plato Dale Farm is a small family farm that specializes in grassfed beef, pasture raised chickens…read moreand also sells high quality vegetables and fruits. You can often find them at various farmer's markets. During the wintertime, you can find them at Horsefeathers Winter Market, North Tonawanda and a few other locations (listed on their web site). They also offer a variety of CSA's and if you're looking to buy 200lb worth of cow to last you the whole winter, summer, year or whatever; they would be some of the best local purveyors to get it from. Prices are higher than your typical supermarket ground beef, but you get what you pay for with very succulent ground beef. I find grassfed beef has a bit of a different taste and prefer it, so whenever convenient I buy my burgers from these guys. The farm also supplies a good amount of beef for Lloyd Taco Trucks as well as tomatillos, cilantro and other veggies. The people who run the farm and their staff are superbly friendly. Next time you see these guys at a farmers market, I highly recommend trying some of their products! I'd love to read some more reviews from people who have tried their CSAs as well.

Kent Miller is what every farmer should be: passionate about his craft, passionate about his food,…read moreand passionate about helping his "customers" - i.e. his neighbors, friends, and fellow WNYers, find healthy, delicious, sustainable food. Kent and the gang, aka Plato Dale and the Sunshine Kids, can be seen regularly at Horsefeathers and Farmers and Artisans in the winter, and all over town during the growing season. The farm offers shares of vegetables and meat (including grass fed jersey cows and other breeds on occasion) and pick up points from North Tonawanda to West Seneca and downtown Buffalo to Arcade. We've purchased a half cow from the farm, as well as loads of produce. They even have farm friends in Florida and supply organic citrus around the holidays (Hint: your oranges should not be perfectly orange and round. They should be a little uglier.) If you aren't convinced by my own enthusiasm, you might be convinced by the fact that several great Buffalo restaurateurs including Peter & Chris of Lloyd's and Steve Gedra of Black Sheep (and formerly of Bistro Europa) regularly supply from Plato Dale. These are heavy hitters and a great testament to the quality and deliciousness of Kent's food. My one complaint, to be fair and unbiased in my review, is the pricey eggs the farm produces. But they're offset by the price-to-quality ratio of everything else they grow and sell, so, water under the bridge!! If you're looking for a local supplier of farm fresh food, Plato Dale should be your first stop.

Natalie's Tamales (Instagram natalies_tamles). Met her at an Yelp event and fell in love with the tamales and sauces. Having southern roots been hard to find a good tamale, but Natalie has nailed it. The pork and chicken tamales are delicious! Like I said the weather was not the best, but I was still surprised at how many vendors were there. Ranging from fresh sausage, fruits, vegetables, sweets, cheeses and wine and alcohol. I met a chef, Chef Scott Bernard. (Instagram goodneighborflavor) He has a stand with balavka, original and brown sugar cinnamon. They both were tasty, the brown sugar cinnamon was my favorite. He was very friendly. He told me he does catering, and four course private dinners, as well as opening a Bistro in Cheektowaga coming soon. I love going and meeting new vendors. I will definitely have to try this market in the summer, where I am sure will have way more vendors. Shop local!
