Besides some minor logistical aspects this was a great event and certainly fully encompassed the spirit of Chanukah! I'll start with the logistical aspects that need improving: gaining entry to the event, exiting the event, and the after-event refreshments. The line leading to the event was chaotic to say the least. There were originally two lines- one was obviously better organized than the other- and eventually, towards the start of the event- the security officers just randomly announced "ok we are going to start two new lines here". While there were now four lines for easier entry, there was a mad stampede to gain access to the two new lines- people were acting savagely, I'll leave it at that. Also, by the end, they stopped wanding people and checking bags. While I'm not entirely complaining, let's just say, by the end security could care less and anything could have been brought into the event. Exiting the event was another nightmare: one way In, one way out. We were not trying to partake in the free latkes and donuts post- event, however, we were impeded from leaving by those waiting in line due to the "one way out" conundrum.
Now for the positives: the event was FREE as long as you preregistered online for a ticket. Seating was abundant and ample- if you wanted to sit there was a place for you. Although the stage was visible from nearly every seat, there was a screen projecting the festivities if that was a better way to view the event for you. They had the presidents own marine band there along with a few famous cantors, all of whom put on an enjoyable show. Later, an Israeli violinist was brought out and she did a hip hop number and some traditional Chanukah classics. A couple nationwide essay winners (kids)read "what Chanukah means to them" essays which were just plain adorable! The actual lighting of the menorah was towards the end with the chief of staff at the White House doing the honors along with the presiding rabbi and his father. Overall, despite the logistical fails, this was a nice way to kick off the eight crazy nights of Chanukah! read more
