Disclaimer to readers: I had previous instruction in Shotokan Karate at the Schaumburg Park District for about a year before moving to Chang Brothers. I received my black belt here and have been a black belt/instructor since 2008. *I am not being paid to write a review, nor am I receiving anything for my perspective. I am basing my review as a (soon-to-be) 10 year student as I am today.* In my several years of training and teaching at Chang Brothers, I can bluntly say that our school is not easy. Other schools around the area would gladly accept students, give them a black belt, and let them be on their way. This school, on the other hand, will not give out black belts unless they have met the school's standards on what a black belt represents. Our program also should not be seen as a daycare where parents drop off their children, let them have fun for an hour with their friends, then go home, not learning one thing about Taekwondo. We have high expectations for students who expect quality martial arts training, including focus, discipline, and respect. Although the first few months of training are difficult, the rewards are great. For children, focus in school and behavior at home improves. For teens, self-confidence and respect towards family and others improves. For adults, strength, cardio, flexibility, and overall health improves. The more a student puts into the program, the more outcomes that student can receive. Personally, I believe this school has changed me as an individual. I do feel more disciplined and respectful because of my black belt. I have less fears about not being able to defend myself, especially while I was commuting in downtown Chicago for college. Even as an instructor, I have learned how to be patient and understand our students of different backgrounds. Overall, the road to achieving your black belt will not be easy, but if you're looking for a commitment that can possibly change your perspective of martial arts, Chang Brothers Taekwondo Academy is the school for you. I look forward to seeing you in class.

He makes learning fun but also takes the role of imparting martial arts skills seriously. He is very dedicated to the studio and his students and they learn so much more than martial arts moves. They reinforce respect and self discipline, the importance of keeping commitments, using your voice, and being responsible. They are incredibly inclusive and welcoming. They really build the kids up by helping develop belief in their own abilities. Every instructor is really great in their own ways (especially ms. Shah and Ms. Oie) and we couldn't be happier with our experience. We plan to continue to participate for a long time. I'm grateful to NK South Elgin and we feel like valued members of their team. What we've gained has been priceless. I highly recommend this studio! It's the best!

As a 55-year-old Dad, I want to ensure my 10-year-old daughter has the skills and confidence to navigate our crazy world. After visiting their website on a Sunday I sent a note to ask a couple of questions. I was pleasantly surprised to receive an almost immediate call from Mrs. Drescher! It is rare to find such dedicated customer service, especially on a weekend. Mrs. Drescher followed up with me, assuring me that everything I was looking for was available at their school. My daughter, Sammi, has since become a gold belt and is learning crucial self-defense techniques, like how to handle situations where someone might try to choke her. The growth in her mental and physical well-being is truly remarkable and its only been about two months. Mr. Drescher is fantastic with the kids, making the classes both fun and challenging. The entire team, including Ms. Oi and Mrs. Drescher, create a welcoming environment where we feel at home. I hope Sammi continues her journey here for a long time. Thank you to everyone at National Karate of South Elgin for the incredible support and dedication!

This a review for the Morton Grove location…read more Our 4 year old son had an absolute fantastic time with sensei Patel in the 4-7 year old beginner class. He looked forward to each class, and was always eager to tell us what he did in class. Sensei Patel did a fantastic job of balancing the class for all ages, not sidelining anyone, and instilling an eagerness in the students to learn more. Occasionally sensei Patel had to reign in, and redirect the energy a bit, however in a class geared towards rambunctious younger learners that is to be expected. For the following session we had him progress to a beginner/continuer 4-7 year old class. We wanted to keep him at the same or somewhat higher level of expectation as in sensei Patel's class. He was by far the youngest student in the class, and the older students were obviously much further down the road with their karate skills. The class ended up catering more towards the older students (6 and 7 year olds). What is needed to engage and motivate a 4-5 year old and a 6-7 year old student is quite different. Also, there are limits to what can be reasonably expected from a 4 year old student. With that said, the instructor was very skilled in martial arts, and for older students I can see him being suitable.

This place is more than a karate dojo to us, it is our extended family. We are very thankful that we found ISKC through our park district. From the excellent programs (for both young and old), to the top notch Senseis, nothing is short of the best. This organization is teaching my boys not only great karate (both competition and real life application), but also teaches them to be healthy, disciplined and confident about themselves. All these skills are directly helping them succeed in their school life as well and making them into well rounded individuals. My boys have also made great friends through this club that they will keep for a very long while! If you are looking for a karate club, par excellence, ISKC is definitely Chicagoland's top karate club! Highly recommended!

As a parent, what do you look for in a martial-arts school?…read more We searched for a school that could connect with our overly-energetic three-year-old son, Nick. He was certainly nervous when he got out on the mat, unsure of why the uniforms and the world of supportive discipline he was placed in. Nick was a typical three-year-old, always having difficulty with basic prompts and just staying still: all part of what makes three-year-olds so much fun and yet so challenging. Nick began in the "Dynomites" program, which is tailored specifically to not only new students, but in the 3-6 years age range. A lot of therapeutic approaches are clearly applied in the Dynomites program. There's attention to gross as well as fine motor skills. There's positive behavioral support that is driven by compassionate instructors who truly honor the martial arts by how the so selflessly give to each and every student. There's a constant stream of positive energy that bolsters confidence and an "I can do this" attitude. Nick began to develop before our eyes. He learned the importance of following instructions, and he thrived on the support he received to get there. He learned the value of "yes m'am," and "yes sir." Nick connected to the professionalism of the school, the amazing support staff - most of which are young students themselves who have taken on leadership roles in the fantastic school. Let me add that we pass at least a half-dozen karate schools on our way to Superstar, three of which are within walking distance in our small town of Bartlett, Illinois. It's now been two and one-half years that we've been with the Superstar family. Nick recently reached his black -striped belt, demonstrating his hard work and time invested, and has now moved up to a new class of students at Superstar Karate. Everything we were looking for, we found at Superstar. Thank you to the fine instructors; thank you to all of you Yelp consumers that took the time to share in our wonderful experience.
