Garden In the Woods - Unique flowers near the lily pond and gravel path on the loop trail. A beautiful oasis.

Possibly the best prize for labeling as many species as possible. So many gardens do not provide good and legible labels on their plants, trees, bushes, ferns, and flowers. This was joyfully, thoroughly well-labeled. As was the path itself on the loop trail. There is an additional outer trail you could take if you're channeling your inner Thoreau but we stuck with the anti-Frost and took the road more traveled. Stay on the path. Recommendations say you can walk the loop in 30mins. You probably could. But we found plenty to keep us oohing and aahing for 90 mins! Turtles, frogs, dragonflies, butterflies, and some fab funghi in the lily pond. Unique and colorful small flowers every which way. The trail has mostly small inclines here and there, but the hike at the end to return to the visitor center is a bit huffy puffy. While there were beautifully carved benches throughout other parts of the loop, there were no benches on this steepest part and there really should be at least one halfway up the hill. Take your time. Wear proper shoes, bring a water bottle. Small parking lot. Bonus gift shop, plant shop, and proper rest rooms.

This was a small, but enjoyable and FREE museum on Brandeis's beautiful campus…read more It had three exhibits as of our visit on 1/26 - all three were surrealist and we got to see a Kahlo and a Magritte in addition to other wonderful works of art. They would liked you register before you go, but I didn't get the sense that we'd have been turned away if we hadn't. There is very limited parking near the Museum - we parked down by the admissions building and walked up.

Established in 1961, the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University is a hidden gem housing one of the…read morelargest collections of modern and contemporary art in New England. It's a relatively intimate museum, with only 13,000 square feet of exhibition space in its three galleries, but the curators make good use of the space with a rotating selection of the 9,000 pieces in the permanent collection - including works by Matisse, de Kooning, Lichtenstein, Rauschenberg, Yoko Ono, Gauguin, Picasso, and Warhol - as well as 9 to 12 temporary exhibitions a year - featuring groundbreaking pieces from emerging artists like Pakistani painter Salman Toor or less commonly-known pieces from more established artists like Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The Rose Art Museum also hosts programs that are open to the public including artist talks, performances, and discussions led by museum staff. My favorite part of the permanent collection at the Rose Art Museum is 'The Undisciplined Collector', an interactive re-creation of an early-1960s wood-paneled den installed by conceptual artist Mark Dion in 2015. It's intended to represent the mid-century modern era in which the museum was founded. The installation features retro-designed furniture (that you can sit on to enjoy the installation!) as well as authentic period artifacts including vintage record albums, magazines, and a cocktail bar. I haven't tried putting on a record or mixing a cocktail. PRO TIP: Admission to the museum and parking outside the main entrance is FREE but you should register for your visit on the museum website (https://slate.brandeis.edu/portal/rose_visitor_admission).

I also sometimes works from the library. There are little quiet nooks next to windows which are ideal for quiet concentrated work. The WiFi is reliable and fast enough, the bathrooms are clean, and there are water fountains. I also often borrow books, either physical or digital copies. The Minuteman Library Network has a ton of books and they will ship them to your library of choice. There are still more things that I haven't yet tried: 3D printing, classes and events, and reserving rooms for my meetings. Finally I have found the staff to be very knowledgeable and pleasant to interact with.

Note, the study rooms are NOT sound proof. I did not realize this and booked one to take meetings on zoom, and was promptly asked to keep my voice down. Oops. Tons of tables around the library to set up and work in addition to the private study rooms. The only drawback is metered street parking only.

Documented stories include the Weston Tea Party, the visits of General Gage's spies in the months leading up to battles of Lexington and Concord and of the visit of Paul Revere's men. The Museum also tells the story of the six generations of the Jones family - Isaac’s direct descendants - who lived here for nearly 200 years up until the 1960s. The original house and tavern (built by Isaac 1765-1768) have been preserved in ways that allow each generation’s stories to come to light by exposing the structural layers of change specific to each time period. More than 70 percent of the items in the Museum’s collections are original to the Jones family. The Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is entirely self-sustaining. The mission of the Golden Ball Tavern Museum is to promote, protect and preserve this rich educational resource as well as to advance the understanding of both the Loyalist experience during the American Revolutionary War and the 200-year history that was lived here by one family.
