The festival is a community event filled with vendors, food trucks, games, and activities for children, and performances throughout the day. I thought there would be more asian inspired vendors and food, but the majority of the vendors were banks, reality and McDonalds? We went specifically for the the Lion Dance that started at 11am. It was very hot and sunny that day, it would have been nice to have covered seating, but we really enjoyed the performances. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What's the August Moon Festival? The August Moon Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most celebrated Chinese holidays. It is held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Chinese families celebrate the end of the harvest season with a big feast. Unlike the American Thanksgiving dinner, the Chinese have mooncakes, which are round pastries filled with lotus seed paste instead of grandma' apple pie. Friends and relatives also send mooncakes to each other as a way of giving thanks. Dragon and lion dances, whose origins also date back to ancient China, are wonderful dances done during festivals, especially exciting are the dragon and lion dances. Most volunteers are Japanese, why is the T-shirt American large (equivalent to extra large in Japan) size? For food concession stands: there are many good stuff, okonomiyaki, takoyaki, ramen, udon, coffee, desert. A little expensive and very long line. There is room to improve. Probably to experience Japanese culture for non-Japanese people, it is a great opportunity.

It's Gala time!!!!!!…read more I have been a gala fan since I was a student member of NABA. So of course I found it absolutely mandatory to fly back to Boston for the 30th Anniversary celebration. It's been a few years since I have been, but from what I've heard about the past few years, this has been the best one in a while. I loved that everyone came DRESSED TO IMPRESS! Everyone stepped up their games this year (as they should). Still a few people who don't thought they were going to club night at Slades (lol), but overall I was delighted to see the masses of beautiful outfits. Originally I was told that there would be no food, so we arrived a bit on the later side. However a buffet was served, but from what I heard, we didn't miss much. No matter what your music preference, there was a room for that ... If you like Jazz, the main ballroom had a band playing. If you like hip hop, there was a small, yet VERY HOT room playing the latest music, and there was a reggae room for us reggae heads. Vendors were out selling there goods. I get it, but the last thing I wanted was to walk around carrying bags. So I didn't by anything, but there were some really cute pieces. All in all great night. It's like big Boston family reunion. It was nice to catch up with everyone. Good event. Can't wait until next year.

What a great race! The proceeds benefit the Dedham Food Pantry…read more The race takes place on Thanksgiving morning, and it's very family friendly. (There were adorable kids running the race costumed as turkeys & some dogs on leashes joined in the fun too!) There's a 1 mile "fun run" route for kids, and then the 5K route for everyone else. People of all athletic abilities run/walk the course (and there is no shame in walking!). The route is on paved streets, so you don't even get your sneakers dirty! It was the 2nd annual Family Gratitude 5K this year, and I hope to be back next year to continue this fun new tradition.

Sadly, we only caught two of the nine days of this massively amazing (and FREE) festival, but boy…read morewere they good ones: - Saturday night (7/20) - 2-hour Mighty Mighty Bosstones concert in the Boston Common - Sunday afternoon (7/21) - Variety of musical acts and food/vendor tents at City Hall Plaza The vibe during the events was extremely vibrant and friendly, and there was incredible energy throughout both days, ESPECIALLY during the Bosstones concert on Saturday night. From the announcements and some Googling, this entire thing was carefully assembled (and funded) by Ted Cutler, and I have to say, this was one of the coolest things I've ever experienced in an already awesome city! I hope this festival returns next year, and if it lines up with a Yanks/Sox series at Fenway (as it did this year) we'll definitely be scheduling our next Beantown visit so we can enjoy it all! I predict next year, if there is one, to be HUGE. This event featured many types of artists, and something for every taste and age. I saw Dean and his touring band, of Jan and Dean fame, followed by The Dunwells, a young, English pop band. Also took in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," and "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" as well. THE DEAL: Plan your vacation to Boston next year to coincide with this fun festival. This is a family friendly way to spend the day... or even the entire week. I went back for more every day!

Mix: a bunch of model train enthusiasts (including current and former train engineers and MBTA…read moreemployees); a former WWII building way out in the woods; a roomful of small, mostly male children and their people; beautifully sculpted small scale scenery that looks like a special effects set, some of which is still under construction, with model trains running through them. To the delight of the under-5 set, even Thomas the Tank Engine made an appearance. Open to the public twice a year, this is a fun way to spend an afternoon. The lighting is bad, the spaces are a little tricky, and it might be a little overwhelming to find so many people into model trains. (It felt like a comic book convention, but with trains.) For small boys--especially those like mine who are really into trains--this is a little bit o' heaven. It may even be a gateway into the grander, and possibly expensive, world of model trains. It may even inspire new wood, plastic, and/or Duoplo track layouts that will take over your living room. There are vendors selling books, model train DVDs, and yes, lots and lots of model trains, tracks, and kits. We were topped out after an hour. I'd also like to add that the guys there were very cool with photos being taken. Admission was $5 for adults. It is possible to get there by public transportation. The West Hingham stop on the Greenbush commuter rail line is across the extremely busy street from the driveway. Then you walk down the mucky dirt driveway under construction with no sidewalks that goes on for at least 10 minutes. Just when you start to wonder where this place is, the parking lot appears.

It's the second year in a row I've come to SoWa Winter Festival and market. I always come out…read morelooking like I shopped till I dropped. I felt much more prepared this year to know a) use spot hero in advance or get there super early to snag a parking spot within 2 blocks of the market b) it gets WARM inside so carry a bag that can hold a jacket and c) carry a tote bag for your purchases or jacket to have your hands free d) have cash ready for parking and the entry fee if possible to make things more efficient. If you're prepared, you can brave the crowds and have a great time. The winter lights set up are always a beautiful sight and the amount of local craft/food/drink vendors is such a delight. New vendors I tried for the first time this year in 2025 that I really enjoyed were Elite Dough Cookies, Whitney Wares, and Matilda RI Empanadas. Places I returned to from 2024 include Wash Naturals and Life Bloom. You also can't go wrong with Eataly in the corner with the wheel of parmesan and many other delicious bites. It's a magical event that I always love going to and supporting the local vendors. I can't wait to come back next year!
