A freak incident while driving from SF to Reno in a snowstorm caused damage to the ABS and other electrical subsystems of my 2011 Prius, and the Toyota dealer in Reno wanted $7000 to do the repairs! Nate's been servicing our Prius, from regular maintenance to replacing our catalytic converter (unfortunately an expected theft for this model of Prius) for the past three years. He welded in a cage around the new catalytic converter, and it's been safe since. Nate is always helpful in explaining what needs to be done, what can wait, and is always on time/prompt with his work. We are going to start taking our other cars to him for service now and are looking forward to it! Note: several reviews from late 2021 indicated the shop was closed. AMAZING! KIND! COMMUNICATIVE! I have nothing but incredible things to say about this shop. I was in mechanic hell - my car was at Auto Row Smog & Repair for two months. I believed my car had some enigmatic issue that couldn't be resolved and had little communication about it. I had been to the dealer who said that I had two bad rear wheel bearings that needed to be replaced. I spoke to Nate about this over the phone who said that was unlikely for a Subaru and most likely I would need only one wheel bearing replaced. I took the car to his garage and was very impressed by his professionalism and the time he took to explain the situation. His garage replaced one rear bearing in the time promised that day and serviced the rear brakes at a discount to the usual cost because of the less labor involved due to the wheel bearing work. My 2007 Prius was stalling out on me. I took it to the dealer who said they were pretty certain I needed a new hybrid battery and it would cost around $5000. They could only be certain by doing a thorough electrical check that would cost me $290. I took my car to Nate's garage and he did a complete check of my electrical system for $98. What he discovered was that I needed a new battery for my key fob...$4.80. Nate also then spent about 20 minutes explaining how the electrical system in a hybrid works. Best mechanic in Berkeley period. My truck needed a new clutch due to the usual clutch dying presenting symptoms (i.e., slippage, not so funny noises when engaging, etc.) Called Nate and made an appointment, and he was able to replace my clutch plus repair associated parts that tend to be effected by Funky Clutch Syndrome within a very reasonable time frame. Very efficient and very high quality work. And the cost was over a thousand less than what my dealership shop quoted me, and the job would have taken 4 days longer (probably to inflate labor costs). Needless to say Nate is my goto mechanic. He's honest, efficient, cost effective, and does exceptional quality work. 5+ stars! If you're car is in a funk on its way to becoming junk, don't hesitate. Nate is awesome. I trust him. After an awesome first experience having him advise an inspect our recently purchased used Prius, I returned with what I believed might be a shot starter battery. He ran the test and battery condition came back "ok". He recommended I hold off purchasing new starter battery unless it happens again. This saved me over $400, which he could have recommended. I was very happy to pay the small fee to fully test the existing battery and charging system and he even offered to credit me that amount of it turns out the battery is actually bad. I've had my 2005 Prius for almost 6 years, and today was the first day that I felt I wasn't being taken advantage of by a mechanic. Nate's Green Garage is such a breath of fresh air! Nate responded quickly when I messaged him on Yelp to ask for a quote for a full inspection, and he was totally honest about the work that he felt needed to be done (which, as it turned out, was minimal - yay!). Nate is the first mechanic who has told me that my car is in really great shape; most of the mechanics I'd talked with in years prior have given me gloom and doom reports about my car and have pressured me into getting overpriced repairs that weren't actually necessary. Nate even took care of some small issues that irked me that I hadn't even mentioned to him (fixed a key and a hatch liftgate issue) without charging me for the work. Nate's garage is amazing! My air conditioner wasn't working (for a year) and I didn't want to pay dealer pricing to get it fixed. I also figured that since "winter is coming," it was going to cool down anyway. So, I decided not to get it fixed. Lately, it's been getting warm in Berkeley (which is rare) and I had the time to get my air conditioning fixed. I checked out Nate's reviews and everyone was super pleased with their work. We have a beater Prius. It's a 2005, and our dog technically owns (squatter's rights) the backseat, and this car survived two cross-country moves and two major cross-country road trips, so you can probably imagine the shape it's in. Nate's first adjective for our car was "neglected." I'd probably choose "valiant workhorse", but, you know, potato/potato. Nate's work is super high-quality, but what I appreciate the most is his sensible way of making car maintenance work for your budget. He helped us build a multi-month plan to get our car back into its best condition. He's been clear with us about how much longer we have on our brakes before they need to be replaced, which helps me budget for that repair in advance. He was clear about which repairs were 100% necessary and which ones were just nice-to-haves. And we pay the same amount for oil changes here as we did in Minnesota, which basically means he's way reasonable for the Bay- where everything costs about 1.5x the rest of the country. Bonus: he has fast, free wi-fi, and usually finishes earlier than quoted, so I can work from the waiting area with no problem. read more

The only issue is that a lot of other people seem to feel the same so it's common to have to schedule an appointment a week or two out. Nate is great. We took our car to the Albany Toyota dealership and they were quoting us $1,100 to do a 90,000 mile routine maintenance. So I called Nate and asked him if this is normal, he gave me his honest opinion and quoted us far, far below. He warned me that he might change the transmission fluid, if necessary. The price he quoted was the price he charged. About $300 total, a $800 cut from the dealership. Nate is honest, got the job done really well, and told us how we can keep our Prius going. Nate is awesome! Had a pretty standard Prius error code, and he checked it out, ordered the part, and replaced it all within 5 hours. He took the time to explain what the part does, what could happen if I didn't replace it, and how much everything would cost. I did some shopping around before taking my car to Nate, and the parts/labor cost for replacing the valve was much lower than at other places. Getting your car fixed is like going to the dentist (usually painful and expensive), but I feel like I had the best possible experience, despite having to shell out some ca$h money. There are pretty much two places in the Bay Area that specialize in hybrid repairs and Nate's Green Garage is one of them. This place is the bomb. I had to get an entire transmission replaced for my 2008 hybrid and Toyota auto shop quoted me $6500. This was worth more than the car so I took it to Nate's to see if i could get a better price. Nate replaced the transmission with a used transmission at $2600 and gave me a very detailed overview of why the transmission failed (oil had never been drained, still getting to the bottom of this), and gave me some pointers on best places for oil changes and he also replaced some sort of water component that was getting very old. Nathan and his team are great. They are very responsive, easy to work with and thorough, the guy is a master in his field. Additionally, my car was fixed a day early so bonus points there!! Great shop! Nathan is down to earth and does honest work at a reasonable price. He replaced the catalytic converter in my 2008 Prius, after the original was stolen in the middle of the night. If you have a Prius, especially an older one, ask Nathan to install a security mechanism. If it's too late, ask him to replace the stolen one. read more

Nate's Garage claimed my previous review was libel and threatened action if I did not remove "the false and defaming statements" I made about their business. So they've been removed, but I do not recommend this place of business. Here are some facts: My car had out of state plates at the time that I brought it to Nate's shop. I had my car thoroughly inspected by two other trusted mechanic shops 6 weeks before bringing it to Nate's and two days after bringing it to Nate's. My family has gone to one of those shops for over 30 years, and the other was recommended to me by a longtime customer. Both of those mechanics completed routine maintenance and neither found safety issues with my car. Nate's shop found safety issues that were quoted to me over the phone at $2,000. When I picked my car up, at least one of the issues that was brought up over the phone had not been noted on the official invoice that I received. read more

Paul knows his stuff. I got a quote from Toyota dealership for 5,000. Paul took care of the issue for pennies on the dollar. Actually took time to research the issue, get back to me, and was then able to take apart the the electrical actuator to find and fix the issue. No other mechanic shop would have done this. Nate runs the garage like none other. I don't know how he does it but everyone gets his personal attention and it's always the most honest and straightforward assessments and really clean work done. He is a hybrid car expert and does a masterful job of installing catalytic converter protection which actually did save my cat converter from being stolen as it was parked in a garage with another vehicle that didn't have that protection and who had it stolen from them.
