This hidden gem of a sports team is just what we need to highlight in Indy. These ladies are amazing-scrapping and skating through the Fairgrounds and showing us just how strong women can be. It's a very casual atmosphere, withstands to sit in or you can choose to sit around at the Derby Circle. Beware, because you may get a little more action than you hoped for if sitting around the circle! Each bout features two teams: the Warning Belles & the Tornado Sirens. Each team jams for about 40 minutes with an intermission. There are some concessions available including Sun King beer. Most bouts revolve around a theme, like the popular Star Wars night usually held in May. This is a kid friendly and super fun atmosphere that you need to check out. read more

Do you think that you've seen every thing that Indy has to offer in sports? My guess is probably not. They say that Indy is the Amateur Sports Capital of the world with every thing from soccer, baseball, basketball, ultimate freebie, and even a roller derby team. The Naptown Roller Girls consist of varying levels of skill, the Tornado Sirens, the Warning Belles, and the Third Alarm, but don't let that fool you. These girls give it their all on the track. The level of skill, strategy, and teamwork that is needed for this is amazing, especially considering how fast paced the bouts can get. If your new to the sport, you shouldn't feel intimidated. The program that they provide details the objective of the sport, as well as explains how they score. During one of the bouts that I attended, prior to the first team taking the track, they had an example run on the track to explain the rules. The announcers do a good job as the bout goes on as well of explaining was goes on. They are also pretty funny and try to fill the dead time. The atmosphere of the bouts is one thing that everyone should at least experience once. The dedicated fans bring excitement to the bouts.The roller girls themselves are very friendly and are just as dedicated to their fans as the fans are to them. The bouts have tended to bounce between the Marsh Blue Ribbon Pavilion and Indiana Convention Center this past season. Ticket prices are generally cheaper if you purchase them prior to a bout; however, you can get them day of. I highly recommend seeing the Naptown Roller Girls in action, just don't go with the exceptions of seeing Whip-its and full body slamming contact. Watching the Naptown Roller Derby is a great way to spend a few hours! At the roller derby event, admission includes two games: the "JV" team (wearing checkered pattern socks) and the Varsity team (wearing the swirly pattern socks). The JV team plays first, then the Varsity team plays. Be sure to stay for the Varsity team, they are very agile and impressive athletes. At the Elements Financial Blue Ribbon Pavilion, they have stadium food (nachos, burgers, fries, etc.) and a bar that serves a few beers and mixed drinks. If you've never seen Roller Derby before, I'd recommend looking up the rules online before coming or making friends with some of the Roller Derby regulars and ask them about the rules. It's definitely even more fun when you know some of the rules and strategies of the game. It's a family friendly event and I'll definitely be back for a game next season! read more

I hadn't seen roller derby since I was kid watching it on TV...back in those days, it was pretty much as fake as WWE :-) Went tonight with friends to the Pepsi Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds to watch the final bout of the Naptown Tornado Sirens & Warning Belles kick butt. Lots of fun...but I have to admit I had no idea what was going on until one of the skaters - Jostleynne Hoes (Andrea) - who is a friend of one of the friends I was with, sat with us for a while and explained the strategy, how points were scored, and generally what the heck was going on. These ladies are athletic and have a lot of skill. Fortunately, we didn't see any injuries tonight. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and can cross seeing a live Roller Derby event off my bucket list...but I'm sure I'll come back next season. read more

HELL YEAH, ROLLER DERBY! I can't wait for this season to start, November 19th baby! This sporting event has my husband completely baffled by my behavior. I'm not generally a sports fan. Baseball, basketball, football...none of that holds my attention. But derby? At a derby bout I become a screaming, cheering, rabid fan. These ladies are amazing and they kick some serious ass. Get there early to get the best seats, it's all general admission. There are two seating areas, the stands and along the track, also dubbed the 'Suicide Seats'. If you sit along the track there's a good chance you'll end up with a roller girl or two in your lap at some point in the evening. So be careful, otherwise you'll spill beer all over the place. (They serve Sun King, fyi.) The sport is fast and it's a good idea to learn the rules ahead of time so you can follow what's going on. They put the rules in the programs they hand out when you enter the building, which helps as well. One of the best things about NRG bouts, other than the amazing women who play this sport, is the crowd. The fans really get into it and you'll see a really diverse group of people there. I'm really glad they moved the bouts from the Toyota Blue Ribbon Pavilion to the Pepsi Coliseum. They were selling out at the TBRP and the Pepsi Coliseum is much more spacious and allows them to sell a lot more tickets. read more

I attended the Naptown Roller Girls Punch Bowl bout against Fort Wayne at the Pepsi Coliseum on January 15th. My first time at the roller derby and I had a great time! The girls are very passionate about their sport, the bout was exciting, the crowd was really into it, and they serve Sun King beer! Good times to be had by all. read more

If you live in Indianapolis this is for you.. This is an non profession league of women whom take their time and enregy to put on a live REAL sport for you to watch. This is not the old school Roller Derby that you either grew up with or read about or more over, seen about in movies with fake punches or some cheese ball wrestling. This sport is real and these women are proud to put on a sporting event that is very real and very rough at times. Sure Indy has professional and Minor league teams they can cheer on. But those are part of a corporate entity that feeds it. This is home grown women that are the peoples people if you were. Now that is something to cheer about. They are something to praised to raise money through their bouts let alone through their own pockets to travel and to put on these events that are super exciting to watch and they make it super family friendly to go to. They listen to their fans about what they can do to make it better for the viewer. When was the last time you had that happen at your colts game? Did ya get some time to talk to the players or get them to sign an autograph? These women do that and do it with style and grace. They give back to the community through some of the profits they earn through sales and set up time to give back to the community directly through volunteering and helping out. If you live in Indianapolis or Naptown and you shrug off these women and the spectacle they put on.. you are simply undercutting your self and missing out on a hell of a good time in the process. First time at the derby, and had a blast. The tickets were cheap, and the beer selection was pretty good (though a little pricey). Had a great time, though I didn't quite know what was going on when I first got there. I recommend looking up the rules before attending. It is not as violent as I assumed it would be.
