This place opened a few years ago and i thought it was great. As the years have went on it has turned into chav central. During day it may be worth a visit to one of the fastfood/restaraunt places they have like nandos, pizza hut, TGI's or to go watch a movie at the cinema. But as soon as night time arrives, try and stay clear, the bars used to be ok but now the pubs which are Beyond, Moot and Players have now been turned into an extension of the Bigg Market, and trust me thats not a good thing. If you do find yourself there enjoying a drink please be ready to be greeted by doorman breaking up fights and stag nights marching about screaming lol, well this is what I found last time I wentnot good! read more

The Gate is Newcastle's equivalent of The Omni in Edinburgh. A soulless glass building filled with chain restaurants. I suppose it isn't all bad. It has a decent selection when it comes to eating Nando's, Pizza Hut and F&Bs all operating onsite. And there is a huge Empire cinema on the top floor, but I'd imagine that it would get pretty busy due to its location. It is right opposite Debenhams and Eldon Square so you could come here for a meal and a movie after you've been shopping. Well, actually just for a movie because Eldon Square has a fancy new food court which is much nicer than what this place has to offer. However, ES lacks a cinema and that is why you would head across the street to The Gate, I would be vigilant while you are in here. It is frequented by some badly behaved chavs and they lurk around the casino on the first floor. So if you are going to the cinema, stay away from the escalator and take the lift to avoid the chavs. The centre is also home to a creepy underground car park so that you can park your car whilst you watch a movie. But since we parked our car here once, we will probably go back to Eldon Square's car park because it was very dark and spooky. I feel that The Gate serves its purpose by having a massive cinema and some restaurants, but it gets let down by some visitors. They should have more staff on hand to kick people out if they're naughty! read more

This is a venue which appeals to a range of people for a night out. The top floor has a hugh Empire Cimema, it shows all the new movie's and often has many screenings of them to try and contol the crowds. The prices for food are expensive but they do some meal deals on Nacho's/drinks etc. The que's for tickets ar managed well as you can now buy your cinema tickets from any of the food outlets as well as the main box office. The 2nd floor has a range of resturants including Pizza Hut, Ask, Wok Maina (which is getting very expensive), Frankie & Benys and Spice. There is also Aspers Casino, its free to join and you can join there and then if you take your driving licence with you. The Ground floor is more about the drinking and partying. Its got a range of pubs, with Mood opening till 1am. There's also Lloyds bar which is always good to start the night off with cheep drinks and Bannatynes has good happy hours on through the day. The best thing is its all undercover and heated, so once your inside you can easily spend the whole night there and not let the british weather spoil your night out read more

It's dry when it's raining. The cinema has 10 screens. Ok, that's really all the positive things I can say about the Gate. To get a really good idea of as to what it is all about, go to the cinema on the top floor on a Saturday night, and when you come out, take a slow amble down the escalators and observe the species known as Chavious Amoebius in action. As the name implies, a single celled organism, and it's Burberry coloured. Actually, it's not THAT bad, but it's a gnat's eyelash away. Bigg Market with a roof. The Gate is a large cinema and eating complex in Newcastle. It is fairly new and (apparentely) upmarket, though I beg to differ on the latter. I have visited the Gate both during the day and also in the evening I would definitely not visit again in the evening and especially not on Match days as there are often drunks and undesirables lurking outside. Through the day the atmosphere is marginally better and it tends not to be so packed with the people. I don't to venture into most of the eateries due to the price; however, I'm partial to Pizza Hut once in a while, which is child-friendly and fairly good value in comparison with the other restaurants in there. I think that when you consider the entry price of most things at The Gate, you would get much better value and also a better overall experience if you go elsewhere in Newcastle. You are made to pay a premium price for the upkeep of a rather modern, impersonal complex. It's not the sort of place that really appeals to me but I guess there must be a market for it as it always seems to be full of people when I have been! read more

Don't go if you're scared of heights. You can see right over the city - but have to go up escalators, lifts, or many flights of stairs to reach anywhere. Good location - short walk from Haymarket Metro/bus statio. Taxi rank right outside. Underground car park. First commercial floor: many chain bars (Llyods, Players) etc and the only-go-if-you're-over-25-and-not-wearing-trainers Mood club. Second floor: the eateries, mmm! Cheap chains: Frankie & Benny's, Pizza Hut, Nando's and I'm sure there's an Indians.(?) Aspers casino is up here and it's member's only but one of the nicest in Newcastle. Third, last, and highest floor: the ten-screen cinema. Amazing. Well worth a visit, but don't come out of the cinema on a Saturday night expecting to have a quiet drink in the bars. Error. This place gives a fantastic view over the city and is in a great location, being only a short walk from both the Haymarket Metro/bus stations and the Eldon Square bus station. There is also a Taxi rank outside and underground car parking (it's about 8 minutes from Newcastle Central Station). The first floor mainly comprises various modern and expensive places to drink alcohol (there are many cheaper and nicer pubs and bars within easy waling distance). The second floor accomodates a Pizza Hut, Frankie & Benny's, a nice Indian restaurant and Nando's; as well as Aspers casino (member's only, quite nice and not difficult to join). The (very high!) third floor is home to a ten-screen cinema, offering the usual overpriced natchos, hotdogs and ice cream. The cinema always has a great selection of films showing, with numerous screenings throughout the day (though if you want art or foreign movies the Tyneside Cinema is a better bet). This is worth visiting just for the view, though overall it is too modern, homogenized and overpriced to be in any way indicative of the city of Newcastle. As the tags suggest the Gate in newcastle has pretty much everything you need from an entertainment point of view. It is very good in those winter months were it is possible to spend a whole night out in about 10 different bars and also a club and never have to go out in the cold. Nando's - Shopping Centers Near Me - Newcastle upon Tyne, XTW

Only Newcastle could house a place like the Gate. Where else in the UK would a shopping mall for pubs, bars and a casino be considered necessary? I can't speak for other countries, but when it comes to the UK traditionally people have shops in shopping malls. Newcastle is a city of tradition, but that tradition is the one of going out on a Friday or Saturday night and getting twatted at the Gate before heading to Sam Jacks (do they still do the Dentist's Chair?) or Sinners then on into the Bigmarket. The prices are cheap for food and certain types of booze, but just don't ask for anything fancy. This is a place where a slice of lemon in a G&T is considered classy. Try playing the Stag Night Saturday Shots game - take a shot for ever stag/ hen do you see on your night out. (Always have one person stay sober to call the ambulance.) The loos are fine, just don't go in them after midnight, unless you want to see some lads and lasses 'having fun'. I'm a Geordie by birth so I can get away with slagging this place off. I just wish it'd been around when I was growing up so I didn't have to walk so far over town. read more

I really liked the Gate, have visited a couple of times when visiting Newcastle would be brilliant for a catch up with friends as they have a variety of bars, restaurants, cinemas and clubs. I've been to The Gate in Newcastle a few times, but nothing has really sottd out for me. At weekends they tend to get a lot of younger people in, whose main priority is to get drunk and have a laugh. while this is ok by me, it's not really what i'm looking for. The Cinema isn't the bad though. it has an amazing 12 screens and they always have the latest films. The entertainment from every towns high street under one roof. It's like something you'd expect to find in 'the sims'. A few bars, a few chain eateries, an Aspers casino and a cinema. The Aspers is quite good and much more convenient to go for a gamble than the walk to Circus. The cinema is decent enough. You could choose to go somewhere much better, but if you really must go somewhere that 'has it all' without having to brave the outside then go there. Very upmarket indoor area, which has a variety of restaurants and pubs. As well as the big cinema upstairs. Its very modern inside and easy to travel too. It even has a nightclub which is pretty good with a good range of music, they have a weird style on the toilets through which are connected to male and female. The Gate seems to be the place to head to over the weekend and is perfect if you like chain bars that all look the same, chain restaurants where the food all tastes the same and malls where all the people look the same! However if it's cold and rainy it's the perfect place to spend a night as you can find everything you need all in one place. Starting from the top floor, there is a big cinema with many screens, the second floor boasts a series of average chain restaurants like Nando's and Pizza Hut and on the ground floor there is a mixture of bars and clubs. The Gate is right in the centre of town so very easy to get to but this also means that the taxi rank outside always has the longest queue in the world so make sure you leave just before the crowds if you don't want to walk home. read more

Obviously I'll be biased here since I work at the Frankie and Bennys in The Gate but i really do think its an excellent place to eat and drink. It has many places to choose from to eat and some really nice bars. Beyond Bar always had great drinks offers on. There is also the Empire Cinema on the Second Floor which has many screens but is still the standard multiplex cinema. Its also the only multiplex cinema in central Newcastle and always has the latest film on along with late night screenings. However despite all these good things it can get a little rowdy at night and the taxi line is often an hour or so wait! read more

The gate is a indoor entertainment venue in the centre of newcastle. There are bars, restaurants, a cinema and even a casino and I like the fact that when the weather is wet and cold outside I am enjoying myself while keeping warm and dry. Some of the restaurants include frankie and bennys, pizza hut, Ask, nandos and a chinese buffet called wokmania. If your thirsty there are plenty of watering holes- Lloyds bar a wetherspoon pub where drinks are reasonably priced, a sports bar,tiger tiger a piano bar. Its free entry and theres something for everybody, but if your wanting a bit of wild one give this a miss and head to the quayside!! read more

I like the Gate, because you can have a night out under one roof, which in this weather is fabulous. You can start with watching a show in the pictures, go on to have a meal in a restaurant and end the night with a few drinks in a club. Another soulless glass building full of chains, redeemed only by the fact that the casino, Asper's, is one of the best I've been to in the country - it has an electric atmosphere every night, and is not one of those dingy places filled with desperate people shouting at the croupier when they lose their money. people are genuinely there for a good time. Hate this place. It is very strange place to go out in and I can not imagine spending a night in here (unless rather intoxicated). There is a shopping centre feel to it and all of the bars and clubs are chains as are all of the food places- as a result it is a very sterile atmosphere. The Gate is a very individual style of Outlet. It makes you want to keep going back again and again. It's ideal for a nightout at the pictures and starting point for clubbing or simply just to enjoy a meal for two or a group of friends. I love The Gate and visit it at least once a month. I would say its definitely worth a visit. Only fault I could find with The Gate is you either have to go up an escalator, up in a very fast lift or take the see through stairs to go up any floors. Not ideal if you are afraid of heights, took me a few weeks to pluck up the courage to go up to the top floor as all you have to do is look over the railing and you can see right the way down to the bottom. read more

I have to agree with the previous reviewer who said that the Gate is not very upmarket. It really isn't, and suffers from the common Newcastle plague of drunk and obnoxious people on pretty much any night of the week, but even more so on the weekend. Also, for such a large complex, I'm surprised that there isn't more in the way of arcade games, to give the kids who obviously can't enter the bars (unless they get their hands on fake id) something to do other than patronise the cinema on the top-floor. Despite my mostly negative experiences of this place, I have found it alright to go to during the day or on a quiet night of the week, such as a Tuesday, as there's a couple decent eateries (such as Frankie and Benny's and TGI Friday) to check out. As far as clubbing is concerned, I hear that Mood isn't too bad despite the cheesy feel, it's a bit more friendly than most similar establishments so could be worth a visit if you need a few dances to work off your drinks. read more

To our disappointment the building was rather small, something close to Vue cinema in Edinburgh, full of restaurants and bars on the ground floor and a cinema on the top floor. If you're of legal drinking age and want to have fun, the Gate is for you. It's a perfect day + night out. First, why not have lunch at Nandos or TGI Fridays, then head upstairs to catch a movie? Then after the movie, you can have dinner at one of the Gate's numerous resturants. Then, it's time to drink! The Gate offers a lot of great bars where you can stay in a cool, calm environment and get completely and utterly smashed! cinema here is great highly recomend the ice cream bar! for food theres pizza hut, frankie and bennys upstairs and the weatherspoons down stairs all are yummy wok mania is okay. There is also an indian and a chinese I havnt tried any of these mainly because there always empty and that puts me off. bars the piano bar is nice and relaxed. The Gate is a fairly modern drinking/dining complex which is also home to a cinema and Aspers casino. Less than a ten minute walk to the metro and bus station, this place makes for a good meeting point especially if you need a fast shelter from the harsh Northernly weather.
