I waited three hours to be seen. Then she was rushed, didn't answer questions. I felt very disrespected and very disappointed.

2.5 years ago I had a Cross-Linking Epithelium-On procedure on both eyes to stop (and even reverse)…read morethe progression of keratoconus disorder in my eyes. My corrected vision was 20/15 at the time with glasses (prescription: -4:00) in my good eye and I was hoping to make it stable so I could keep using "glasses" and not hard contact lenses. This procedure was a part of trial studies ongoing in the US. At 1 year after the procedure, Dr. Talamo and I realized that the procedure had failed and needed to be repeated in my good eye. My corrected vision was I believe 20/25 by that time, so it was reduced by 2 lines. I was told that only a few of their cases have experienced failure and they were stabilized after a repeat procedure was performed. The Cross-Linking procedure was repeated on my good eye for a second time, but the epithelium (the thin layer of skin covering the cornea) was removed this time (Epi-Off) to allow better absorption of Riboflavin. For one year after this second procedure the topographic tests showed fluctuations in my vision, and my best corrected vision worsened to 20/40ish. AT 1.5 years milestone after the Epi-Off, right now my best correction vision is improved to 20/25-20/30 (still worse than what it was 2.5 years ago before Epi-On) and the glasses prescription for my good eye is improved to -2:00 and the topographic images indicate that the cone is flattened, but also spread further. But my double vision was & is getting worse constantly and I have been developing monocular diplopia after the Epi-Off Cross-Linking (=I see two of everything), which I was told that "I just have to accept it and live with it". I have got considerable amount of corneal HAZE (grade 2 out of 4, to be more specific) due to the poor recovery of epithelium caused by Epi-Off procedure. The corneal thickness was at 475 micro-meters before the Epi-Off procedure, was down to about 400 micro-meters right after the epithelium was removed, and after 6-months the corneal thickness was stabilized at 425 micro-meters till now, so I guess that the epithelium did not fully grow back and only healed partially. The corneal haze did not improve and in fact has been slightly getting worse over the time. I am having some difficulties driving at night due to severe glaring, haloing, and ghosting caused by head lights or traffic lights. For me everything and every color is faded, pale, and with lower color intensity, making it more difficult to tolerate the doubled vision. It frustrated me every day, and in fact, every minute of the past year. *** PROS: - Dr Talamo, Dr Zar, and Dr Hatch are all respected and great doctors. - After I talked about other places charging lower fees, I got a discount taken out of 8'000$ total cost for Cross-Linking procedure on two eyes (the procedure is out-of-pocket). - 1.5 years after the second procedure (epi-off Cross-Linking), now I am told that the topographic images taken from my good eye show improvement and flattening, the only think that lowered my frustration. - If the Cross-Linking fails, a repeat procedure will be performed, free of charge for the second time. However it is not easy to prove how the vision is changing with just words. *** CONS: - The epithelium-on Cross-Linking procedure I had 2.5 years ago did not work. Failed in convincing my doctor that my vision was becoming worse, I had to draw some excel-sheet diagrams based on the measured parameters of my eye tests by other clinics in Boston to make my point to the doctor. Finally Dr agreed that the procedure was actually failed. - While I was told that "there is only 9% chance of corneal haze that should be resolved within 6-12 months after the procedure", I have gotten considerable amount of haze in my good and dominant eye that unfortunately, I will have to live with this cloudy vision for the rest of my life. I would personally not had agreed on a Epi-Off Cross-Linking procedure if I knew there is a much greater chance of permanent corneal haze. - The repeated surgery was performed using a different protocol (Riboflavin concentration, etc.) than the first procedure, and I was not informed of that fact until 5 only minutes before the surgery (in the surgery room), and had to quickly decide to whether proceed or decline treatment at that time. There are journal articles recently published on this new protocol, saying that it is less effective than the previous protocol. For example an article conclusion says: "efficacy in reversing topography features of keratoconus with use of 0.5% hypotonic riboflavin seems to be lower compared to the reported results with "standard" 0.1% riboflavin" [1] [1] Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking with and without Epithelial Removal: A Contralateral Study with 0.5% Hypotonic Riboflavin Solution. - The staff at this clinic are good, but not great. I see new staff every time I go there and they sometimes don't know what they are doing. *** I will update my review over the time

MEEI is disrespectful of patient time and needs better management…read more If you visit any of the AI sites (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini) and ask them for a summary of patient reviews of this location, you will learn that patients are very happy with the physicians. However, the complaints about HOW LONG YOU WILL WAIT here are really bad - and I can attest to it as I had a new patient visit there last week. I arrived at 3pm, a little before my appointment, was taken for a few eye tests by technicians, and was asked to leave my contact lenses off, which is challenging as I am blind as a bat without them. This request would have been understandable if I had then been seen quickly be the ophthalmologist. Instead, I was LEFT IN A DARK ROOM ALONE FOR 45 MINUTES WITH NO COMMUNICATION WHATSOEVER FROM ANYONE and 5pm was fast approaching. I started wondering: Was the office going to close without me even seeing the physician? The only person I saw was another patient, "Kathleen," who was also there as a new patient. She was worried since she had also been sitting in an empty room for a very long time (45-50 minutes) that she would be locked in because it was now 5pm and she feared the office would close with her inside. I told her not to worry, that she and I would leave together if we had to. At 5:10pm, I was fed up! I put on my contact lenses, intending to leave the facility with no contact with the physician, after checking on "Kathleen" so that we could exit together. As I wandered the hallway to find her, an employee from the reception area saw me and incredulously asked "You saw the doctor already?" I said "No, I have waited far too long in the dark, with no communication about my status, and I am leaving." A technician came flying out of a nearby room to stop me, explaining that the physicians are grossly overbooked (which was obvious) due to demands made by Mass Eye and Ear in their efforts to maximize revenue. I noted to her that the least this practice should be doing, given the practice of overbooking and therefore causing patients to wait up to 2 hours to see the physician, is to (1) let patients know in advance to plan for every visit to be a 2 hour visit, (2) to have coffee, tea, and water in the waiting room, as I heard other patients saying the they were thirsty in the waiting room but had no where to get anything to drink, and (3) have a policy of contacting waiting patients every 20 minutes so they can at least know that they have not been forgotten or waylaid. They also need fix their new patient processes as both "Kathleen" and I were given either the wrong time or had the date changed on them with no notice prior to the appointment. This is no way to run a physician practice. The physicians are not the problem. The management is.

The Lexington office, specifically Emily for a ophthalmic technician, is where it's at. We went to a different location first and the technician had an awful time getting the eye drops in my kids' eyes and they were honestly traumatized by it (so was I!!). Emily in the Lexington office is AMAZING with children. She is so kind and caring and gets the kids to do all of the tests and they are psyched about it. From the magic glasses (3D test) to the pirate test (eye charts) to the dreaded eye drops... she is a star. Her method of having the child lie back with closed eyes, put in drops, and then blink, works EVERY time. We first met her when my daughters were 4 or 5 and they still ask if we're going to "the right" eye doctor when we have an appointment. She also keeps her patients updated, moving, and to get to the doctor on time. The doctors are all good across the board and across offices, but it's the technician who makes or breaks the appointment. Thank you Ms. Emily! You are the BEST!

This review is so long overdue! I have been a patient of Dr. Shriber for at least 15 years. Most…read morerelationships don't even last that long, but the Doc and I have a good thing going, and I'm in it for the long haul. His office is very clean and has the latest diagnostic equipment. His secretary, Sasha, is super friendly, and Dr. Shriber is by far one of the kindest, most patient doctors you will ever meet. I'm not saying that I'm fussy, but when it comes to him asking me, "Which is better, 1 or 2? How about now, 1 or 2?". My response is always, "Can you do it again, Doc?" I don't know why. It's as if my eyes are always playing tricks on me. But his patience goes beyond the examinations. I swear it knows no bounds. I work on airplanes and once you hit 30,000 feet, these planes will suck all the moisture out of your body. And that extends to your eyes making your contact lenses uncomfortable to wear. Why not wear glasses then? I'm too vain. Anyway, there are contact lenses out there that advertise they are perfect for dry eyes. Over the years, I find them to be outright lies. So a couple of years ago, Dr. Shriber had me try a different pair every couple of weeks until I felt the contacts held enough moisture for my long haul flights. I remember saying to him, "Really? Aren't you going to get sick of seeing me?" No, he just wanted me to be happy with them. I went back 4 times before I finally placed my order. My last visit was a couple of weeks ago. 15 years later, I still LOVE going to this man. He is knowledgeable, generous, funny, and he also takes most insurance (if not all). Tons of street parking and a cheap public lot in the back ($ .50 an hour). If you need glasses, his office is connected to Gordon Optical which is run by his brother. So the next time you need an eye exam, look no further!! I give Dr. Yale Shriber a 10-Star review!

Each procedure turned out beautifully and I could not be happier with the outcomes. The entire staff that we dealt with (both times) were for the most part all extremely nice and accommodating. The only few who were not were the actual ladies behind the check-in desk. There is a "no food or drink" policy in the waiting room (which is understandable) and they have zero problem yelling at you for breaking their rule. However not even two seconds later from telling us about our (closed) bottle, they are behind the desk drinking and eating. How about practicing what they preach? Location wise, each time it's pretty much been a breeze coming in and out of the hospital. There's a little cafe right outside the waiting room for hungry parents and caregivers which is a really nice touch. I would definitely recommend Dr. Elliot to any and all parents who's child ever may need an eye surgery. She's out of Boston Children's Hospital in Waltham, but will travel to satellite locations.
