Wow, most definitely one of the better meals I have had in my life…read more I walked in here on a weekday evening for dinner and only one table was occupied. I was a bit concerned since I wasn't greeted by any server upon arrival. I went up to the cook (owner?) and asked if I could sit anywhere. I got a positive response. Once I sat down, I was immediately given a menu by the cook. I was informed that if I wanted to sit outside, I would receive a different menu. Holland Yelpers, please explain? The first few pages of the menu are in Dutch and items are priced between 16 euros and 20 euros for a regular entree. The last page of the menu is in English. My friend and I got the following items: Br kruidenboter (€3.75): bread and butter. Simply amazing. It came with garlic butter, pâté spread, and cream cheese. I couldn't stop eating. Me gusta mucho. Uiensoep (€5.75): french onion soup. Definitely one of the better french onion soup out there. More, por favor. Escargots kruidenboter (€7.50): snail meat in garlic butter. It was surprisingly delicious. Kip sate (€16.75): traditional Dutch-Indonesian food. This was definitely the highlight of my meal. It came with salad and relatively thick-cut fries. For the salad, there were jalapeño, fried beans, celery and...some other stuff mixed in there. It came with two skewers of meat dipped in peanut sauce. SO good. Somersby (€3.50): cider. Since alcohol is cheaper in Europe, I opted for the cider beer. DivFris (€2.35): Diet coke. SERVED IN A GLASS BOTTLE! Whoa! So cool. The cook/server was so friendly. It turned out he was the chef/owner/cashier. He was so nice and patient. He spoke some English, though not the most fluent, but was definitely able to communicate.

It's a strange place. But, it's strange in a "grandma's house" sorta way - so not a dealbreaker. My husband and I both ordered the kip sate (chicken sate with peanut sauce, for those who aren't Dutch), and a Palm beer - but the two bottles of Palm that they had left were reserved for the regulars, apparently, so we got kip sate and some other beer. Both were good - which was a bit of a surprise. Not a surprise were the very old regulars, the dogs and cats running around, the cozy fireplace in the back, the very little English spoken here, the limited menu and the kitsch. I would go back, not regularly, but for an unusual winter night when I want to be entertained by some neighborhood crazy - this is the spot.

I stayed in Haarlem for a week with my husband and while we kept saying, "oh, let's check out menus at other eateries, we ended up to keep returning here because it's that good! First off, the outdoor seating, if you get here during lovely weather, is an extra treat. It overlooks a lovely mellow plaza and church. In short, we tried about 5 of their appetizers and whichever ones you order, you will love, trust me! I would fly back here in a heartbeat just for their short ribs entree! Ugh...the meat just fell off the bones and fingerlickin' good. Yes, as an American getting down and dirty eating them probably grossed out a few patrons, but that just means their ribs here are that good! They definitely get American Soul Food right here! I'm heading back to Europe in a few weeks. Wish I was back in Haarlem just to eat here again. Service is friendly and great, the food is spectacular. A must eatery when visiting Haarlem or Amsterdam for the matter!

Fortunately, we had ordered soup. The prices were on the high side for what you get. We ordered the recommended satay and ribs. Both were decent, but not exceptional. I was disappointed after reading that this was a good restaurant in Haarlem. I'd say Haarlem has much better to offer (close by) with similar or lower prices. Overall: decent food, higher prices, and poor service.

Also the wines they have are excellent! We decided to take a bottle of an Australian Shiraz and really loved it. Our waiter was happy that we were happy with our choice, and even came back with some other bottles that he could recommend if we liked this wine :) The food was just amazing! I started with the steamed bread with a crocodile curry and had the kangaroo steak as the main dish. After the waiter came to take the plates I told him that I just had one remark about the dish: they should be BIGGER :) There actually was nothing left on my plate again and I think I even started to take of the top-layer of the stone of the plate because it still had some flavor :) The dessert was a Caribbean cheesecake and if it is still on the menu, really can recommend it. Actually used my fingers to get the last bits of taste out of the plate, because it was so good :) Because this place has such good food, it is quite busy. Really recommend making a reservation if you want to eat here.
