Ever wanted to sit on a chair that resembles a giant hand?…read moreOr perch on a stool that's carved into two feet? If the answer is yes, Villa & Hut is going to be the shop you've been looking for. Launched a decade ago in Melbourne, it's an environmentally friendly store that specialises in hand-crafted, wooden furniture including bamboo beds, rattan armchairs, mahogany bookshelves and teak coffee tables. All the wood is recycled or reclaimed from timber plantations in Java and there's also a selection of ceramics and stoneware imported from Indonesia.

They seem so friendly, all soft and carved from beautiful wood, offering a perch for weary legs. Of course, they are also a bit random (are they comfy? Do people actually have them in their homes? Questions I would ask if giant hands could speak!). Villa and Hut is a really lovely furniture shop on a corner of Sydney St. They make and sell ethical and sustainable furniture made from wood, which is often reclaimed. Whether you're after a chest of drawers, a shelving unit or a chair, there's lots of beautiful pieces to choose from. Some of the rattan items look a little cheap to me, but in general, most of the furniture and other home wares seem to be of good quality. I am a particular fan of the teak garden furniture- lots of clean lines and chunky wood- right up my alley! If you're after conservatory furniture they also have lots of interesting chairs, which remind me a bit of what the Pier used to sell.

I'm not so sure about this place really. It calls itself the Brighton Discount Store, and on the…read morefront of the shop it claims to be the best place for students in town, but when I went in looking for a simple, compact shelving unit, the items I was shown ranged from £40-£100+ and way out of my price range. The stock is pretty utilitarian furniture, beds, shelves, chest of drawers etc...and will pretty much do what it say on the tin. If you want really cheap stuff though, I would recommend going to Shabitat, Emmaeus or the Hove YMCA. However the problem with these places is that although you might find exactly what you want, you also might not get a whiff for weeks. Therefore the plus side is of course, that you get what you want straight away, and if not, you can get order it in for an extra tenner. Second hand double beds (£75) and single beds (£45) caught my attention, and could well be useful to know, especially as letting agents don't always provide them.

Discount Furniture doesn't have a large selection of stock, but it's definitely cheap. They sell…read moremostly bedroom furniture mixed in with sofas, and advertise special rates for both students and landlords. Most wooden items were pine, which has that cheap-look to it, but the couches looked to be of good quality. I must also mention the sports car bed. I've never actually seen one - just on television, and I think, at 5'3", I could probably fit into it. Just keeping my options open.

First of all: assess your budget…read more If you've got a few grand to spare: read on. If you're normal: you might as well not bother. Money aside, I'd vote Rume one of the best, if not the best, independent furniture store in Brighton. Amongst other things they stock two in-house ranges, Baker & Belgae and Jet Baker, that comprise everything from Victorian style Chesterfields to Opulent Chez Longs. They also stock various other pieces including lamps, clocks, cushions and cabinets. If you've serious cash then you can even get a bespoke item made to you exact specifications. If it wasn't so bloody expensive I'd be a bigger fan of this place but I can't give five stars to a business that charges over £3000 for a sofa.

Laid out in an open, warehouse style space, they also sell cool and funky coffee tables, cabinets, dining tables, lamps and chandeliers. If I had a spare three and a half thousand, I'd be tempted to buy Mool's incredible, life-size horse lamp. It makes me laugh every time I see it and would shock visitors. In reality, my budget only stretches to Tom Dixon mirrorball lamps and their divine cushions. Should I pick the rabbit and lettuce ones or pigeon and jelly?

If every city had an independent, well-established second hand/ recycling centre like Shabitat the world would be a better place. For example, it recently provided me with a new bed frame for a mere £20, saving me the extra cost of shopping at a high street store. I recommend this place for students or for those not married about a bit of wear and tear. Its founding 'nothing-is-waste' philosophy is one that every community should adopt. Shabitat provides at least part of a model for sustainable living so in my opinion it's worth supporting.
