    Brighton Discount Furniture Store

I'm not so sure about this place really. It calls itself the Brighton Discount Store, and on the…read morefront of the shop it claims to be the best place for students in town, but when I went in looking for a simple, compact shelving unit, the items I was shown ranged from £40-£100+ and way out of my price range. The stock is pretty utilitarian furniture, beds, shelves, chest of drawers etc...and will pretty much do what it say on the tin. If you want really cheap stuff though, I would recommend going to Shabitat, Emmaeus or the Hove YMCA. However the problem with these places is that although you might find exactly what you want, you also might not get a whiff for weeks. Therefore the plus side is of course, that you get what you want straight away, and if not, you can get order it in for an extra tenner. Second hand double beds (£75) and single beds (£45) caught my attention, and could well be useful to know, especially as letting agents don't always provide them.

Discount Furniture doesn't have a large selection of stock, but it's definitely cheap. They sell…read moremostly bedroom furniture mixed in with sofas, and advertise special rates for both students and landlords. Most wooden items were pine, which has that cheap-look to it, but the couches looked to be of good quality. I must also mention the sports car bed. I've never actually seen one - just on television, and I think, at 5'3", I could probably fit into it. Just keeping my options open.

Unreliable, ignorant, untruthful, unhelpful, sloppy, disorganised, money grabbing two bit outfit. This just scratches the surface of what I have experienced with this pathetic excuse for a furniture retailer. If you are prepared to wait forever for your goods these are the goons to call. Ordered furniture with them in February 2011, paid over two grand. Delivered in May 2011. Sounds OK so far BUT the wrong furniture was delivered (their mistake). Promised to reorder and deliver in August 2011. No such luck! Numerous phone calls made - numerous promises that they would chase things up and ring me back - no follow through from them. End of September - still no delivery of the paid for furniture. October brought even more false promises until eventually YES! our furniture had been delivered to Furniture Warehouse and would be delivered week begining 12th October. NO! the furniture has now disappeared in between couriers. Furniture Warehouse don't return our calls, leaving us to chase the couriers. Simple message is DO NOT HAVE ANY DEALINGS WITH THIS JUMPED UP LOW GRADE TRADER! From Elaine Price

However, after that point there have been endless difficulties contacting Furniture Warehouse to get this delivered. There phone numbers were permanently engaged/not answered. I wrote letters which they did not respond to. Thankfully the furniture has finally arrived today (26th November) and is what was ordered but I wouldn't recommend these people - terrible customer service.

Money aside, I'd vote Rume one of the best, if not the best, independent furniture store in Brighton. Amongst other things they stock two in-house ranges, Baker & Belgae and Jet Baker, that comprise everything from Victorian style Chesterfields to Opulent Chez Longs. They also stock various other pieces including lamps, clocks, cushions and cabinets. If you've serious cash then you can even get a bespoke item made to you exact specifications. If it wasn't so bloody expensive I'd be a bigger fan of this place but I can't give five stars to a business that charges over £3000 for a sofa.

Laid out in an open, warehouse style space, they also sell cool and funky coffee tables, cabinets, dining tables, lamps and chandeliers. If I had a spare three and a half thousand, I'd be tempted to buy Mool's incredible, life-size horse lamp. It makes me laugh every time I see it and would shock visitors. In reality, my budget only stretches to Tom Dixon mirrorball lamps and their divine cushions. Should I pick the rabbit and lettuce ones or pigeon and jelly?

When comparing it with Oxfam's flashy locally designed clothes just up the road on North Street, or even with the colour co-ordinated rails of Kemp Town's neighbouring charity shops, you may well turn your nose up at this one. It's dark, dingy and disorganised. It can even smell pretty bad. However, if you're not too sneeze-prone and have a bit of time for a good rummage this place is definitely worth a visit. Although maybe don't even bother if you suffer from OCD - with its disarray of items, and seemingly no discerning judge of what makes the shelves, it is hard to resist the temptation to give The Friends Shop a thorough clean and tidy. But for the dedicatedly thrifty amongst us the prices are dirt cheap - all books are 50p for example and clothes much the same. Make a few trips, have a good rummage, and you're sure to find a bargain you'll be proud of. Well, eventually. One of Brighton's hot spots it may not be, but I feel strangely fond of The Friends Shop. It recalls those days of yesteryear before charity shops were popularized by magazines and celebrities, and thus anything vaguely nice always ransacked by an earlier bargain hunter. And with money raised supporting local hospital and healthcare facilities, at least there's one clear excuse for that 'bound to come in handy' item you end up buying.

Friends however, still maintains this old school ethos or maybe no-one told them about inflation. Either way, have fun rifling through the rails as bric-a-brac drips from the cluttered walls. There is so much packed into a small space that it takes a surprisingly long time to get around it all. Best of all is that they have already concocted different fancy dress outfits from the random jumble, genius.
