Stopped in on our way, with a freind, to our Airbnb (the friend was dropping us off there before flying home) in Anchorage and really enjoyed everything. The best places are often tucked away and kind of easy to miss and honestly had another friend, a local who'd gotten married a couple days prior, not recommended this place we'd not have known. Days out: I can remember specifics of what we all got beyond the Samosa Chaat and my veggie pakora, but everything was really tasty. We were in Anchorage after 7 day cruise and missing Indian food so based on the reviews selected this place. It is a small restaurant with about 10 tables. Nepali-Indian place. Momos, mixed kabab platter and Chicken Karahi were excellent. Avoid Chicken Biryani. Seemed like they cooked generic veg biryani and tossed cooked chicken into it. The reason I didn't give it five stars was the server was no help at all ( she misled me when i asked her questions about the daunting ( to me ) menu She told me the chicken and meat items came with out vegetables . I órdered the Vegetable Biryani . It was very good but it was 90 percent rice .. My friend had the chicken tandoori and it was served with onions and peppers and it was delicious . When I think of Anchorage, Indian/Himalayan food does not come to mind. Boy have I been missing a lot on my previous visits. The place opens at at 5pm and we arrived around 5:10 and the place was packed. Luckily we snagged the last 4-top. We quickly settled in and ordered. 1) Shanghai-La Sampler | good variety of tasty starters. It was hot and crispy and yet soft on the inside and loved it with the sauces. 2) Beef momo | steamed dumplings with sauces on the side. One is soy sauce and the other is a curry based sauce. I like it with the curry based sauce, but would have liked a stronger kick to it like other places do so. Sadly I forgot a picture because we were hungry! 3) Chicken tikka masala | classic staple and this places makes it well. 4) Chicken Makhani | Similar to butter chicken but shredded meat. Really good as well. 5) Baigan Bharta | Roasted eggplant and then cooked with spices. Flavor was good here, but texture was too puréed. Other places leaves the eggplant in larger pieces, but overall still pretty good. 6) naan | good and hot. What more can you ask for?! Overall between the really friendly service and good food I will make this a regular stop when I come home. read more

We were surprised to see so many Himalayan restaurants in Anchorage. We came here on our second day in Anchorage after a 10.9 mile hike. So - we were really hungry! Food: We ordered the Meat Momos and Shrimp Yangoon after reading way too many rave reviews about both. I have had better momos and the shrimp yangoon was honestly quite okay. The consistency of the curry was quite watery and it lacked flavor. The shrimp was too hard to bite in. Dessert: They were out of a few items on the dessert menu so we ordered the rice pudding and coconut kulfi. The rice pudding was good (not great) but the coconut kulfi tasted like frozen sweetened coconut milk. They were served as cubes so I am pretty sure they were made in an ice tray. It actually reminded me of the times when as a kid I would try to "make" icecream by filling up the ice trays with flavored milk LOL. We tried another Himalayan restaurant in town and it was AMAZING. read more

From an Indian food perspective, there was nothing really exciting here! I know I'm being a hard critic here but I get excited when I go to an Indian restaurant and my expectations are high, I admit it. The appetizer menu options were OK and it tasted OK. I got lamb curry and other members of my party tried other variations of the curry, but all of us had the same impression that it was all OK, nothing that stood out as that curry that we have been searching for that is incredibly good! My favorite part of the meal honestly was the non-bread they did a great job with their garlic nonbread. The restaurant is pretty small so seating is limited, but I give them kudos for trying to incorporate the Indian culture with pictures of Indian art and Indian landscape and even a TV on an Indian channel. Service was great, they are patient and helpful when you are experiencing new Indian foods. I agree with my fellow Elite Yelp review Andrew H. that the prices were high for lunch for sure. A typical lunch option with nonbread will be around 20$ and that's if you get nothing else! At the end of the day, for someone that hasn't had Indian food that much I think that they would enjoy it and I would recommend that they go. However, if you are an Indian food lover, I'm hoping that I can find a better option for you in Alaska! read more

Friendly staff. Feels like a family business. The vegetarian momos were exceptional! Onion kulcha was both sweet and savory, in that way that only well cooked onions can be. Be careful, the default on the food was medium which is very spicy! Next visit we will go for mild. ( and I'm not a wimp) Raita was creamy, yogurty and good. It's very rare that I eat any kind of East Indian or Himalayan food, yet today I found myself craving some sort of coconut curry dish. I remember a long time ago eating Himalayan food at Yak & Yeti and quite enjoyed it, so I set out to find Himalayanesque food. I had heard good things about Namaste Shangri-La on Tudor, and decided to dine here. It exceeded any expectations I may have had! I walked in with some idea of what I wanted to order. I needed a dish that was going to allow me to have a little bit of a variety, so that I could try a few dishes. I ended up ordering the Non-Vegetarian Thali which came with papadom & tamarind dipping sauce, rice, house salad, daal soup, an entree of choice, & a delicious rice pudding for dessert. My entree of choice was the Shrimp Yangoon. Yangoon has a combination of their house sauce, coconut milk, cream, and fragrant herbs. It was absolutely divine in taste. It wasn't too thick with coconut milk, but a balanced combination of all ingredients. I was looking for something on the sweeter side of the palate, and this was the closest they had. It didn't even need to be sweet. It was delicious as it was. I've never tried Daal, which is a curry lentil soup. I really liked the herbs in that soup. The samosa was a beef samosa. I don't typically eat beef, but this had a pretty good fragrant taste to it and paired well with the tamarind sauce. The house salad didn't have dressing, but a very lovely combination of cooling spices topping it. It was earthy tasting. The rice pudding was a very creamy and earthy tasting. I enjoyed everything! The wait was about 30 mins from the time I ordered until the time it came out, but it was well worth it. They took their time making a delicious meal that was made with TLC. A homey, cozy spot for Indian eats -- it was busy on a Monday night (though we didn't have to wait too long for a table for 4) and the staff here was so friwnsky! The food arrived promptly and the portions are HUGE. They were very accommodating of my being vegetarian and brought out the chicken from the sampler dishes on a different plate. The food here is SO tasty as well! I got the plain naan and muttar paneer and both were classics done right. The paneer was in flavorful sauce and the cubes themselves were perfect. Wow, I've somehow neglected to leave a review of Namaste Shangri-La after going there for several years. We had takeout from there last night and it was once again fantastic. Our order consisted of garlic naan, lamb vindaloo (medium heat), saag paneer (hot) and chicken biryani (medium heat). We really enjoy spicy food, and they always nail the heat levels just as we want. There are not afraid to make your food spicy, so be aware of that if you're not a fan. If you ask for something to be hot (4/4), it will be. I'm a huge fan of their saag paneer, which is essentially creamed greens (usually spinach) with cubes of lightly pan fried paneer cheese (a very mild white cheese). Ladel it over the copious amounts of basmati rice that NSLa provides and enjoy. My wife is a huge fan of their lamb vindaloo, and it is a saucy, tomato-y, spicy mix that always makes us smile. The chicken biryani has large chunks of meaty chicken in a bed of rice and spices that make the mouth tingle. SO GOOD. And their naan is ridiculous. We love this place, and the crowds in the restaurant show that Anchorage does too. Last night, we lucked out (it was a Thursday during spring break, so a bit slower than usual). We're still playing it safe by ordering takeout wherever we go, so we ordered at about 5:15pm and it was ready at 5:45pm. We've had to wait over an hour on weekends, and I think that's more the norm for NSLa. Love this restaurant, and we'll continue to make it our home for spicy indian food! read more

I used to go to namaste all the time a couple years back and was so excited to come back here and eat since it's been awhile. I always got the chicken tikka masala and garlic naan which always hit the spot. But tonight, I was disappointed. The chicken tikka masala was a lot lighter in color than usual (see photo, normally it's orange/red in color) and it tasted much more tangy/acidic when it should taste more creamy and rich.. it just didn't have quite the tikka masala taste.. not sure if the owners changed because I didn't recognize any of the restaurant staff. I also got the garlic cheese naan and it was way too oily. There was a good amount of oil dripping off the naan anytime I picked it up. I want to give this place another try because it was my favorite Indian restaurant for years - hopefully it'll be better next time. read more

First time coming here tonight. It is on Tudor across from Starbucks, in the strip mall with UPS and a dance studio. We got seated right away, a few other tables were occupied. The tables and booths were very clean. Took a few minutes to get water and menus then a few more minutes for someone to take our order. We got veggie samosas to start. They were freshly fried and were pretty good. Pretty big and I only ate half. The veggie ones had potato and peas inside. Came with a basil sauce and a sweet sauce. Next we got the sampler meat entre which had tandoori chicken, tandoori shrimp, lamb, malai, and chicken timka. I thought the meat was very dry and tough. The tandoori shrimp was very over cooked. It wasn't my favorite. That came with some rice. There were two sauces, daal which is lentil based and masala sauce. I liked the masala sauce better. We also order the bread basket which had cheese naan, garlic naan, and onion kulcha. I guess we should have ordered some sauce to dip them or had a sample sauce tray to get. We once went to a restaurant somewhere that had different naan breads and a tray of 12 different sauces and humm to put on them oh it was so good. But that wasn't here. The momos were really bitter and some of the worst I had ever had. We had ordered the half plate option they had (7 pieces) and could not finish it amongst the four of us. If you're looking for homey setting, good food, and good service, then this is the place for you. It's not high end, but it checks off all the blocks for a great place to eat Nepalese food. We ordered for ourselves but it definitely became family style. The service was really great. The waitress was fast and super polite. For appetizers, we ordered the meat sampler plate (they have a vegetarian option as well) . My husband got the plumb tea (super fragrant) and I got the mango lassi. Everything was great to start off. For our main course I got the beef briyani. It was super aromatic and tasted amazing. It also came with a side of raita, so maybe ordering the extra raita was a bit much. The briyani also came in a huge portion and we barely made a dent, just the two of us. The naan was great and super fluffy. My husband ordered the lamb handi. Lamb is not something I gravitate toward because of how gamey it could taste, but this place did an outstanding job. The heat level was Hot and was almost unbearable(husbands choice... not the fault of the restaurant), but the raita definitely helped cut the heat. Good for sharing as well. Overall if you're looking for a great humble experience, with amazing Nepalese food, I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

This was one of my favorite places to eat, for about six years. I have not been there for about a year, and went for lunch today. I ordered the lamb momo, the chicken tikka masala (always my favorite thing there) and the gachee naan. I suspect that the place has either changed hands, or they've hired new staff and cooks. The momo was greasy and smelled unappetizing, the naan was over buttered to the point of being greasy, and the masala sauce on the fairly dried out chicken tasted like a cheaper version of the jarred sauce you can buy at Carr's. Incredibly disappointing. The wait staff seemed nice, but I didn't recognize a soul working there... I get it, things change. But the atmosphere that used to be serene now feels more like a place to read a newspaper while waiting for a bus. read more

Food - so many delicious flavors. We ordered a lot and shared it among the four of us. Chicken Pakoras - this reminded me of fried chicken nuggets...that were freshly cooked with Indian spices. Comes with two delicious sauces. A green sauce with subtle hints of mint and a soy based sauce. Dal Soup - this was a little on the bland side. It was also very soupy with very fine bits of lentils. The cilantro pieces were the largest in the soup. And they were good. Garlic Naan - basic naan. Plenty of garlic and just a touch of oil. Didn't seem like any salt. Vegetable Momo - these little dumplings are very tasty. Two sauces come with them and while the dumplings are small (smaller than the size of a ping pong ball) there are about 15 on the plate. Achar - this was really small and really salty. It was tasty. It reminded me of an olive tapenade you might get with hummus. Tikka Masala with Lamb - large chunks of lamb. Sauce was full of flavor. A little hard to cut the chunks and a little tough. Chicken Korma - very light and buttery flavor. Chicken was moist and easy to cut. I could taste the cashews. Rice - good. Multiple refills for free. Ambiance - simple little restaurant. White table clothes, black napkins. Simple Chairs. Soft music culturally appropriate. Notables - the paintings on the wall. Cleanliness - there was rice on the floor at the table where we were seated. The table was clean. All the silverware and plates were very clean. The menus seems like they had been wiped off. This place came recommended by a colleague and we finally made it. We arrived just at dinner opening and almost every table was full by the time we departed. The staff was extremely kind, attentive and answered questions in detail. Patrons were coming in for pick up orders and they were also offered seating and a beverage if they had a wait. We ordered garlic cheese naan, 1/2 order of veggie momos, chicken tikka (mild), chicken curry (medium). I think there were 8 Momos in the half order! The large portions were true of the entrees too! Hubs wasn't sure the heat of the spices and could have gone hot instead of medium. We both felt you could smell the heat, but not taste it in the curry (which was perfect for me, hence I had mild). We decided to do take away since we wanted to eat at home. I got the chicken curry and I was so disappointed, it was very watery, and did not have a very strong taste. It almost had the consistency of soup. I didn't eat it, but I did have some of the Naan from the variety basket and even some of that was somewhat burnt. The staff who seated us that evening rushed us and kept asking us if we were going to order some food for dinner. We tend to eat dinner later in the evening but caved and ordered the chicken biryani and kadai paneer. Both average and extremely spicy and not cooked right. COVID-era post. Due to restrictions, I was not able to eat in-restaurant this time, but have had great lunches there in the past. I ordered takeout and they now are providing delivery. Food is excellent. I ordered the chicken makhiani (buttery, tomato-based, creamy sauce, not-spicy). It came with a huge portion a rice and definitely a bonus if you splurge the extra $3-4 for freshly made naan. I have also enjoyed the saag paneer and tikka masala dishes in the past. They have a wide variety of naan (garlic, cheese), suaces, and meats and seafood (including shrimp, fish, goat, and lamb). Pepsi products here. Always friendly. Delicious food. Absolutely incredible curries and service. We brought a party of 8 and the service was top notch. We ordered 7 different curries, 2 sampler baskets of naan, and two regular baskets of naan and took left overs home (even with a part of 8!). Our food came out very quickly and every single one of the curries was our favorite. 10/10 will eat again read more
