The instruments I saw were coming out of sealed packages, everything looked polished and well maintained, and the staff was friendly. I was offered a drink and given a little bottle of water, and my technician remained friendly throughout the entire service. Unfortunately, I had one specific issue that has had a much longer-lasting effect than the manicure itself. I asked that my cuticles **not be cut, only pushed back**. I explained that whenever the cuticles on my fingers are cut, the skin around the base of my nails begins peeling a few days later. It eventually becomes sore and can throb, and historically it can take me a very long time to get the skin around my nails completely back to normal. Interestingly, my toes don't react this way, but my fingers absolutely do. It had actually been about a year since I'd dealt with this problem because other salons have respected my request to leave my cuticles alone. During this appointment, an electric file was already being used around my cuticles before I really had an opportunity to say anything. When it came time to actually cut them, however, I specifically asked her not to and explained why. She was very friendly about it, but told me, **"Oh no, it'll be okay,"** and proceeded anyway. I even told her I was pretty sure my skin was going to peel afterward, and she assured me that wouldn't happen. Looking back, I wish I had stopped the service right then. I initially blamed myself for not doing so. But when you're sitting in the chair and a professional confidently tells you that something will be okay, you naturally give some weight to their expertise. In that moment, I allowed myself to be talked into something I already knew did not work for my body. I had my nails done on Sunday. Within a few days, the skin around my nail folds began lifting and peeling, exactly as I had warned it would. I continued taking photographs as it progressed, and the later photos show peeling around multiple fingers--not simply one accidental hangnail. Afterward, I looked into whether there was a medical basis for what I have repeatedly experienced. Cleveland Clinic explains that cutting or aggressively manipulating the cuticle can damage the surrounding skin and contribute to hangnails. The American Academy of Dermatology also advises against cutting cuticles because the cuticle helps protect the nail and surrounding area from infection. I am **not** claiming that I can medically prove this appointment caused every bit of peeling shown in my photographs, nor am I claiming that everyone will react the way I do. What I can say is that this is the same reaction I have repeatedly experienced after having my cuticles cut. I had gone about a year without this problem while having salons leave them alone. I specifically warned the technician about that history, my cuticles were cut anyway, and within days the peeling returned. That is ultimately why I'm disappointed. This wasn't simply a preference about how I wanted my manicure to look. It was a request about what I did and did not want done to my body, based on a reaction I already knew I experienced. I've certainly learned that in the future I need to stop the service if this happens, regardless of how reassuring someone sounds. But I also don't believe a client should have to argue with a professional to have a clearly stated boundary about their own body respected. And for anyone else who regularly notices peeling, torn, or painful skin around their fingernails several days after a manicure: **it may be worth paying attention to what is being done to your cuticles.** It took me years to make that connection myself.
