Terrace Bar - This is the terrace bar in Newcastle. A great place to enjoy a unique drink

In a city full of soulless TAB-illuminated meat markets, Terrace Bar is a breath of fresh air…read more A social experiment of sorts, Terrace Bar is the debut product of Newcastle's "small bar movement" and boy have they shown us what we've been missing. Set up in a faux-derelict manner (behind the bar is the only modern aspect to the place), it owes a lot to Melbourne's hipster-chic scene, from the boutique beer selection to the fantastic DJ sets and impromptu dance floor. The atmosphere is great, friends and completely without any of the confrontational attitudes that plague... well.. just a bout every other bar in Newcastle. Only minus is that the license is only til midnight. The host live gigs and other performances in the small venue upstairs and also have a rooftop beer garden (as I said: "Melbourne") which is now open from lunchtimes at the weekends throughout the Summer. Only open Thursday-Sunday, this is a fantastic addition to the city and hopefully it will thrive.

A hidden hot spot in the heart of Newcastle. I've never been before and walked right passed it. A…read moretruly deceptive entrance. I'm not a fan of dark places which seems to be a trend with drinking venues. However, taking the stairs to the top completely changes the atmosphere. Downstairs you'd think they would go out of business but upstairs is where the people are. Back down by the bar was a dj playing great music with enough space for an impromptu dance. Not my type of place but I can appreciate what they are trying to achieve here.

He's been drinking there for years with a group of mates so there is a strong sense of nostalgia here - I totally get that, and have my own pubs that do the same for me. But without the nostalgia, I'm not sure why you'd venture to New Lambton to visit the Blackbutt - except that you get to say "Blackbutt" as many times as you like. And the nearby Blackbutt Reserve (which is free) is totally AWESOME and has wombats, so combining the two would make for a great afternoon!! It's really only a normal Aussie pub, with semi-decent pub grub, a kids playroom, pokies and a front bar. The food is ok - we had pizzas last night and the toppings were good although every one of them came out a bit burnt on the edges. But don't expect anything fancy here - stick with a Parma or a pizza and you'll be fine. Coopers is on tap here and it's cheap so that is pretty great! Staff are friendly and fine. I can't stretch to give it four stars, as its really pretty ordinary, but if you paired a visit here with the local Blackbutt reserve that would be a four star outing... Wombats!!!!

Great food and great service. We dined there after a footy match on Sunday night and man was it…read morepacked out. Had to wait a while but the convenience of a nice pub meal and the Best Western Hotel upstairs meant that after a huge feed you weren't too far from your bed. Recommended for short stays.
