The Lesson
I typically offer my students one private, one-hour lesson per week. The first half-hour is usually focused on vocal exercises and technique, while the second half is devoted to the singer's repertoire. The more experienced students are invited to sing in semi-annual recitals in Berkeley.
The Method
The technique I teach to all students is rooted in bel canto, which is most commonly exhibited by classical singers. Other influences include Alexander technique, Feldenkreis method, and my over fifteen years of private teaching experience. My students sing Classical, Musical Theatre, Pop, Jazz, and Non-Western literature.
Age and Experience
I do not have a minimum age requirement for entry into my studio. However, due to the physical sound demands, I usually suggest that young singers do not start until their voice changes (in their mid-teens). I accept students of all levels and abilities to my studio.
History
Established in 2000.
Although I taught private voice throughout my college and conservatory years, my voice studio in its current form took shape once I returned from Boston in 2000.
At the time, I taught out of a downtown Berkeley landmark: Tupper and Reed music store. Currently, I teach at: the Berkeley City Club, the University of California at Davis.
My students have performed with the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Festival Opera, West Bay Opera, Sacramento Opera, Lyric Theatre of San Jose, The China Broadcasting Performing-Arts Group, Institut Goethe - Paris, Aspen Music Festival, BASOTI, Lamplighters Music Theatre, Woodminster Summer Musicals, TheatreWorks, New Conservatory Theater, Mission City Opera, Alameda Civic Light Opera, Seaside Music Theater - Florida, Contra Costa Civic Theatre, Oakland East Bay Symphony Chorus, Théâtre Adyar - Paris, Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, Quisisana Resort - Maine, Les Misérables National Tour, and many others.
Meet the Business Owner: Jonathan N.
Jonathan Nadel, lyric tenor, has performed opera, oratorio, concert, and choral roles throughout the United States and Western Europe with the San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Lyric Opera, Festival Opera, Golden West Opera, Berkeley Opera, Opera Piccola, Mendocino Music Festival, Sonoma City Opera, North Bay Opera, Apollo Educational Touring Opera, Trinity Repertory Company, the San Francisco Fringe Festival, the San Francisco Sinfonietta, Harvard Pro Musica, BASOTI, the American Bach Soloists, and the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, among others.
In addition to his private voice studios in Berkeley and El Cerrito, Mr. Nadel also teaches applied voice at UC Davis. He holds degrees in Music and History from UC Berkeley and earned a Master's degree in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied voice under Richard Hughes. He has recorded on the Harmonia Mundi USA, Koch International, Centaur, Arsis, Newport Classics, and Pro Música labels.
