Checked out this locally owned health food store in Washington Heights. It gets pretty cramped in this small place that's located on Broadway at 171st. NAAR specializes in herbs and supplements. Also has organic foods but pretty expensive. This is good if looking for some alternative medications. A pretty small place but it packs a lot in here. It's better than going to a chain store. The prices aren't that bad on some of the things. Popped in here after not feeling good. They have lots of things at the counter in front including ginger chews that were good in a time like this. Affordable for a pack full. There's also tons of vitamins. Also has a refrigerated section with organic and vegan foods. These foods can be found cheaper even at Whole Foods so forget about these. Good to go to a small business. It's limited selection but there's lots to get here. There's plenty of things for vegans and vegetarians. read more

I came here on a Friday around 2pm. I had read on Berlin Bakery's website that these guys were a retailer of their bread. I came here looking for the Berlin Bakery Sprouted Spelt Sourdough Bread. They did have the brand, but they only had the Sprouted Spelt Bread. Not in Sourdough. This store is very unassuming from the outside. I've passed it a million times before and never noticed it. It really blends in with the neighboring local businesses. Inside, they do stock many "health" products. Some you won't find at the local grocery stores. Yogi brand and other "health" teas. Wholesome Organic Agave Syrup and Molasses. Bragg's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and Liquid Aminos. Vegenaise Better Than Mayo. Earth Balance Mindful Mayo and Buttery Spread. Bob's Red Mill assorted flours Rudi's Organic Bakery breads Ezekiel 4:9 breads Food For Life breads And they have a nice store cat that is chill. read more

Very impressed with this store. I went there for the first time yesterday (6/15/11), and was happily suprised with the store's selection of organic health food items. I was not expecting to find this tucked away in the neighborhood between 171 and 172 street and Broadway. The prices were reasonable too, compared with other places I would normally go to buy these items. Beautiful and fresh organic blueberries: $3 vs. $4 at other stores. My favorite finds aside from Casacao Cacao Powder, were bee pollen and Braggs Apple cider vinegar. The juice bar and Alkaline water "fountain" they have are pretty cool. You can smell the carrots when you walk in the store. I also saw people come in with 3 gallon bottles to have them filled up with the alkaline water. They make it very convenient for the customers. Equally great were the people: Knowledgeable and very friendly. Dr. Naar is incredibly nice, generous, and has a wealth of information on healthy eating habits. He claims to be 71 yrs old, but looks like he's in his early 50s! That's somebody you can take advise from. He is certainly doing many things right. read more

I was really pleased to discover this little health food market. It's small and more than you would pay at a place like Fairway, but I definitely prefer it to Gristedes if I'm just picking up a few things in the neighborhood. They have a large selection of vitamins - good brands, too. Also they have a lot of teas and a juice bar in the back. Then they have a moderate assortment of snack foods, easy-prep stuff like soup in a box, staple foods like pasta, frozen food, etc. They also have some produce, healthy bread, and a small refrigerator section with tofu, yogurt, etc. Basically, they have a lot of good quality products which are often hard to find in the area, or which are insanely overpriced at a place like Gristedes. SOOOOO happy to have finally given this place a shot! SOOOOO donkey punching myself for not checking Sano out earlier! They have a lot of great healthful product options at prices equal to or (more often) less expensive than Gristede's, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, or Fairway. The store is clean, including the refrigerators and freezers. It's small, but laid out very well and, therefore, easily to manuever. And they carry Willowbrook Soy Margarine! SUCH a hard find! And it costs less at Sano than you'll pay for regular butter at Fine Fare!!! Go on in and check 'em out! This is a hidden trove of some of the crunchier health food out there and I'm so happy to have it nearby even if it is overpriced. It's doesn't stick out from the crowd of store fronts, you have to look for it. You can get tea and vitamins as well as cereals and all kinds of grains. They carry produce, too, which is great - so often a place like this doesn't go much beyond vitamins and flax. Legit looking juice bar, too. read more

This place does not get enough press! The somewhat busy window display does not do justice to the impressive mix of organic, healthy, alternative food inside. They have a huge selection of Bob's Red Mill grains, beans, etc and literally every vitamin or supplement you could want. There's also a bunch of vegan options in the freezers. They don't have a lot of fresh veggies/fruits, but for pantry staples, this place is great. The price is right, and the owner (a doctor from the DR) has been running this place for over 20 years and is only too happy to have spirited conversations about inflammation, the gut microbiome, etc. He's a smart, interesting dude and I hope all the hip gentrifyers moving here help keep this place in business! read more

I wanted to leave no stars the customer service in this place is horrendous. The prices are deliberately overpriced and it is not a huge selection one or two items of something. They are placing organic on labels to overcharge. The people that work there are not healthcare experts nor fitness types of any kind. They cannot answer a question pertaining to vitamins and minerals that are sold at the store. They do not consume the products that are sold in the store because they look extremely unhealthy. I went in there to get a freshly made wheatgrass juice but the woman behind the counter for the juice did not have on gloves and she was sitting down twirling her hair. There aren't many stores in the area that sell organic, vegan, health food, making Sano a good option. I would give it a higher rating, but the variety and range of products are limited compared to other health food stores. You can find alternative milks (soy, nut, rice). There is also refrigerator food section with veggie meats and cheese as well as organic animal-based products. They have raw nuts and dried fruits at bulk prices. Fresh juices, including wheat grass are also available. Vitamins and supplements seem to be the staple items here. read more

Visited the store this weekend for the first time and got myself a full body cleanser highly recommended by the Dr. I got a retinal exam and it was amazing how a simple procedure can say so much about your health. mostly pricey but fun tiny health store with VERY healthy-looking workers. stuffed to the gills with stock including but not limited to: shampoos, soaps, creams, lotions, essential oils, reasonably-priced pre-bagged bulk nuts and dried fruits, organic apples ($3/lb), some supplement brands i'm hesitant to buy because i've never heard of them before, 10 cent organic fruity lollipops, carob powder, hippie breads and cereals, natural brownies, fresh smoothies and vegetable juices, frozen meat-alternatives, and natural bedbug repellent. a few words of spanish can be helpful as some of the clerks are not big english speakers. watch out for the former alleycat underfoot with pretty green eyes. he likes to be admired but is known to bite. :) read more
